  • KCB Profits Drop By 43% Due To Covid-19 #rwanda #RwOT

    KCB Group reported on Thursday that its profits had grossly dropped by 43.1% in the past nine months attributed to the deadly Covid-19 pandemic.

    'The performance was largely impacted by increased provision on loans and advances in the wake of increased risk of credit default associated with the Covid-19 pandemic,' KCB said in a statement.

    The lender raised its provision for potential loan losses 3.4 times to Sh20 billion from Sh5.8 billion, eating into its bottom-line.

    The non-performing loans more than doubled to Sh96.9 billion or 16.8% of the total loan book.

    The ramp-up in provisioning overshadowed robust earnings from the mainstay lending business, which saw total interest income jump 23% to Sh63.2 billion.

    KCB's loan book expanded 18.7% to Sh577.5 billion but the lender invested most of its cash in government debt securities to mitigate the risk of defaults.

    Its stock of bonds and T-bills surged 91.6% to Sh216.5 billion, contributing to the increase in total interest income.

    Kenya confirmed its first case of coronavirus on March 12, setting off a series of public health measures that have hurt workers and companies' earnings including the closure of bars, ban on international travel and lockdown of counties like Nairobi and Mombasa.

    Some of the restrictions have been removed but the economic damage is expected to linger for months.

    KCB says it restructured loans worth Sh105 billion in the nine-month period to give financial relief to customers whose earnings have dropped due to the pandemic.

    'While the pandemic is far from over and likely to continue into the next year, further straining the business and economy, we are projecting some recovery as the East African region finds some stability in living with the effects of the virus,' said chief executive Joshua Oigara in a statement.

    'We will continue to support our customers through the crisis and enhance initiatives geared towards ring-fencing the business. Our approach is conserving cash and managing cost.'

    KCB Group, for instance, suspended its interim dividend when announcing financial results for the half-year ended June in a move that saved it Sh3.2 billion.

    The lender's interest expenses rose 20.7% to Sh15.4 billion, partly reflecting the impact of a 31.6% growth in customer deposits to Sh772.6 billion.

  • Greed For Power Major Cause For Regional Instability – President Uhuru #rwanda #RwOT

    Kenya's President Uhuru Kenyatta has blamed the regions instability on greed for power manifesting through 'ethnicised and regionalised competition for political power.

    Uhuru was delivering a state of nation address on Thursday in the capital Nairobi. He noted that Kenya's security is currently strong despite increased unrest across the region.

    His remarks come at a time neighbouring Ethiopia is now in war mode with fears that the unrest may spread to southern neighbour Kenya and other surrounding countries.

    The federal government in Ethiopia has been engaged in an escalating conflict with Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) pitting Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed against the region's political leadership.

    'The State of our national security is strong. Our homeland is secure from the varied threats against it. For this, on behalf of all Kenyans, and as Commander-in-Chief, I give thanks and praises to the brave men and women of our security services,' President Uhuru said.

    He said Kenya is actively involved in reconciliation efforts in troubled countries, saying like he did with former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, most of these counties need a handshake.

    The current instability within the region, Uhuru said, has been caused by 'ethnicised and regionalised competition for political power.     'We must always remember that the wages of bad politics is the people's suffering and ruin. They need political leaders focused on including the young and desperate not inciting them to revolt against their country and their elders,' the President said.

    The Head of State also noted successful efforts in quelling external attacks particularly terrorism.

    'The terrorists continue to be routed, arrested and prosecuted. Their plots are detected and disrupted before they can cause serious harm to more innocent Kenyans. The war against crime and criminality continues apace, driven by a National Police Service that continues to undertake technological, human resource and skills reforms to better serve Kenyans.'

  • Former President Of Ghana Jerry Rawlings Succumbs To Covid-19 #rwanda #RwOT

    Former President of Ghana, Jerry John Rawlings, 73, died Thursday after reportedly contracting Covid-19, local media reported earlier.

    Rawlings is said to have died after he contracted the deadly virus and was rushed to the intensive care unit of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra.

    The founder of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) was last seen in public on October 19, during the final funeral rites leading to the burial of his mother, Victoria Agbotui.

    The former military leader was born Jerry Rawlings John on 22 June 1947. He ruled the country from 1981 to 2001 and also for a brief period in 1979. He has been Ghana's longest-serving head of state.

    He led a military junta until 1992, and then served two terms as the democratically elected President of Ghana.

    Rawlings initially came to power in Ghana as a flight lieutenant of the Ghana Air Force following a coup d'état in 1979.

    Prior to that, he led an unsuccessful coup attempt against the ruling military government on 15 May 1979, just five weeks before scheduled democratic elections were due to take place.

    After initially handing power over to a civilian government, he took back control of the country on December 31, 1981, as the Chairman of the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC).

    In 1992, Rawlings resigned from the military, founded the National Democratic Congress (NDC), and became the first President of the Fourth Republic.

    He was re-elected in 1996 for four more years. After two terms in office, the limit according to the Ghanaian Constitution, Mr Rawlings endorsed his vice-president John Atta Mills as a presidential candidate in 2000.
