  • COVID-19: Rwanda FDA bans use of Purell-instant, Guard- hand sanitizers #rwanda #RwOT

    These drugs have been discontinued under the guidelines that hand sanitizers should contain ethanol alcohol at a rate of between 70% and 80% or isopropyl alcohol at 75%.

    The Rwanda FDA said that based on laboratory tests conducted by the agency, it was found that the Guard-Hands sanitizer (30ml) and the purell-instant hand sanitizer (60ml) did not meet the requirements and thus ‘the drugs were discontinued’.

    Rwanda FDA warns people that methanol is not used in the manufacture of hand sanitizers because it is used as pesticide and has a detrimental effect on health. The agency requires users of hand sanitizers to check the information on the bottle in which the drug is purchased.

    These guidelines are 70% to 80% ethanol or 75% isopropyl and other important ones include glyceline and hydrogen peroxide. Guard-Hands sanitizer and the purell-instant hand sanitizer did not meet the requirements and thus were discontinued.

  • RIB Submits Rusesabagina’s File To Prosecution #rwanda #RwOT

    The waiting is over, Paul Rusesabagina’s file has been submitted to prosecution and one of his lawyers will begin assembling defense muscle.

    The Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB) told Taarifa on Monday night that the file would be submitted to prosecution in Tuesday morning.

    “Tomorrow [Tuesday] we will forward the case file to the prosecution, ” RIB Secretary General (Rtd) Col Jeannot Ruhunga confirmed.

    Rusesabagina was arrested by RIB on August 31, as a result of an international warrant and international collaboration. He faces several counts including terrorism, arson, kidnapping and murder. Date for initial appearance in statutory time is yet to be announced.

    Rusesabagina,66, is the supreme leader of a terrorist group National Liberation Front (FLN) and its political wing – Rwandan Movement for Democratic Change (MRCD).

    The FLN terrorists have previously boasted of attacks in areas surrounding Nyungwe National Park that stretches down south to the Border lining with Burundi. Dozens of people were killed, others kidnapped and several household items and money looted from communities around this park.

    “He will have to answer for all these actions,” President Paul Kagame said, adding, Rusesabagina has blood on his hands,” his foreign backers can only help him to prop him as a movie hero but he will have to answer for killing Rwandans whether he likes or not.”

    “Rwanda may not be doing well and they may really want to change things but the method they use by killing people is not acceptable,” Kagame explained.

    Rusesabagina as paraded before local media last week on Monday. “He is currently detained at Remera Police Station,” RIB said.

    Rwanda is currently holding and trying dozens of FLN members for war crimes and other violations committed on Rwandan territory including murder. Callixte Nsabimana one of the FLN leaders is undergoing trial in Rwanda.

    The trial of Rusesabagina will be very crucial in collaborating with Callixte Nsabimana’s and some of his fighters currently undergoing trial in Rwanda.

  • Rwanda’s Most Expensive Forest Has 4G WiFi, CCTV Cameras, Night Lights #rwanda #RwOT

    It takes at least 5 hours driving from the capital Kigali on a smooth 230km tarmac to south-west before entering Rwanda’s 117-year old Nyungwe forest. It is Rwanda’s most protected and expensive natural installation.

    In 1903, the German colonial government declared the park as a reserve and a colonial crown land of Nyungwe. Nyungwe became a National Park in 2004- it spreads to more than 1,000 square kilometres.

    Not much is known about this forest yet the government pumps a lot of resources in advertising the country’s touristic attractions. However, the suspension bridge offering a breathtaking canopy walk over Nyungwe forest has overshadowed all other things about this forest.

    Nyungwe forest has one of the smoothest roads in Rwanda- the road is so flawless that it feels like driving on house tiles.  Meanwhile, any time of night it is possible to drive without worrying of darkness in case your car lamps burn out. There are road lights throughout the road in this forest.

    Comprising of a 3-star hotel, canopy walk suspension bridge, a host of attractive birds, chimpanzees, colobus monkeys and a rich ecosystem, Rwanda government has made the security of this forest a priority.

    The forest stretches deep south, forming much of the territorial borderline with neighbouring Burundi, a country that has taken on a negative and hostile stance against Rwanda. Burundi has been in the recent years financed and allowed Rwandan rebels to crossover into Nyungwe forest to launch attacks in Rwanda.

    While in this forest, there is evidence of highly armed and trained commandos of the Rwanda Defence Force. They protect every meter of the forest with high-tech equipment. The recent attempt by rebels to camp in this forest was met with fury and firepower from the Rwandan military.

    Last year Rwandan national parks alone received about 111,136 visitors contributing US$28.9 million from park entries. Parks include; Akagera National Park, Nyungwe National Park, Volcanoes National Park and Gishwati Mukura National Park.

    Chimpanzees

    Inside Nyungwe forest you have a chance of chimpanzee trekking – It is a park activity of following trails that lead you to a point where you are near and close to the chimpanzees in their natural habitats. You have a chance to view their daily activities from grooming, mating and feeding including fights and nursing babies.

    The whole trek lasts around 2 hours and though some parts can be slippery and/or steep, the walk is relatively easy.

    Canopy Walk in Nyungwe Forest

    It’s quite an experience walking 60m above the forest floor, over the tree canopy, along the 200m, rope-style metal bridge.The canopy bridge leads between some huge, ancient trees, home to many species of endemic plants and ferns, as well as over 300 species of birds, 25 of which are endemic to this area, which is part of the Albertine Rift.

    Kitabi Eco-Center, Nyungwe Forest Lodge, Nyungwe Nziza Ecolodge, Nyungwe Top View Hill Hotel. Nyungwe Forest is surrounded by five districts including; Karongi in the North, Nyamasheke in the North West, Nyamagabe in the North East while Nyaruguru in the Southeast of the park.
