  • Rusesabagina Drops Free Lawyers Opts For Paid-Lawyer #rwanda #RwOT

High level terror suspect Paul Rusesabagina aged, 66, does not need free services of a pro bono lawyer and has opted for a paid lawyer that will take on the court battle.

The Rwanda Prosecution said on Friday, 'It is the right of the accused to have legal counsel so we have no objection to his request.'

It is not yet clearly known why Rusesabagina may have turned down free representation in favour of paid-for legal services. However, on Friday while appearing before court via video conferencing, his lawyers David Rugaza and Emerine Nyembo were not with him.

Rusesabagina facing 12 charges including 'terrorism' submitted to court during the session that he preferred the hearing be postponed to another day next week when Gatera Gashabana his new and paid-for lawyer would be available.

'After hearing both sides, we resolve that the hearing is postponed to next week on November, 10 at 9:00 a.m. at Nyarugenge Intermediate Court,' the Judge ruled on Friday.

In September, Taarifa held an exclusive conversation with David Rugaza that had been presented as a lead defence lawyer in Rusesabagina's case. Questioned on some assertions that this is a politically prompted case, he said; 'I don't know. For me, I'm defending criminal matters. For the political issue, I'm not a politician to know what is political or not…. [laughs]. My expertise is in legal matters.'

For now, David Rugaza and Emerine Nyembo have been recalled by the Rwanda Bar Association.

According to Julien Kavaruganda, the President of Rwanda Bar Association, their BAR lawyers are appointed to represent clients who cannot afford a lawyer or need assistance.

She said that since suspect Rusesabagina is capable of paying a lawyer, 'he can choose among the other BAR lawyers we offered or anyone else,' she added,' the ones [David Rugaza and Emerine Nyembo ] we had offered him were no longer useful in this case.'

Meanwhile, it should be recalled that days after Rusesabagina arrived in Rwanda and shown to the press, his foundation and family named a list of lawyers they said were their choice to handle the court battle. They include; Belgian lawyer Vincent Lurquin, American lawyer Peter Robinson, Rwandan criminal lawyer Gatera Gashabana. Others on this list include; Kate Gibson from Australia, Brian Tronic from the USA, and Canadian Philippe Larochelle also Jared Genser from US.

According to Aimable Havugiyaremye the Prosecutor General, 'Paul Rusesabagina is charged with various criminal offences, including terrorism, financing terrorism, recruiting child soldiers, kidnapping, arson, and forming terror groups. This is in connection with his leadership role in the armed group known as MRCD/FLN.'

Criminal law experts argue that Rusesabagina's sudden change from free lawyers to a paid-for lawyer could be linked to preparations for a situation of a merged case. The cases of Rusesabagina and Nsabimana Callixte 'Sankara' are being mulled for a merger.

Before Sankara's arrest and prosecution, he always took to international and social media to claim responsibility of attacks conducted by his National Liberation Front (FLN) rebel group in Rwanda's Nyungwe forest.

Rusesabagina is the supreme leader of the opposition MRCD group which is said to have an armed wing, the FLN.

According to prosecution there are 16 FLN fighters in custody that will soon be very instrumental in the merged case of Rusesabagina and Sankara. Prosecution said it intends to submit a joint indictment of these 16 defendants, together with Rusesabagina.

'We believe that all 19 defendants should be tried together. This is a common practice, known as the principle of connectivity of offenses, which is provided for in our laws,' the Prosecutor General said previously.

  • Observing Sabbath Connects You With God #rwanda #RwOT

According to the Bible, it took God six days to create the earth and everything in it. On the seventh day of creation He rested from His work of creating. He also blessed the seventh day and set it apart as holy.

At the very beginning of time, there was no religion, there was a written law. Even before sin entered the world and our work became a burden!

The Sabbath was designed by God for rest, and He was even the first one to celebrate it!

'So God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it God rested from all his work that he had done in creation' (Genesis 2:2,3).

However, today, we are living busy lives — We all have long to-do lists—they often feel never-ending!

But supposing your to-do list had an end? Or at least a pause button? What if you could set that list aside and take time to rest and relax?

We all get the same 24 hours in a day, but it's not uncommon for us to try to pack in 48 hours-worth of tasks into those 24! While a valiant effort to be super-productive, this is an impossible feat. Our time and mental energy are precious commodities, and it matters how we spend them.

God's gift of the Sabbath allows us the benefit of setting aside a set 24-hour period each week to rest and worship. He's given us permission to stop our busy work and spend focused time with Him.

God knew exactly before you even existed you would need time to rest. And He wanted you to have the very best!

That's why God created the Sabbath on the seventh day of creation. God gave us the gift of the Sabbath and designed the day with you in mind.

The Sabbath or Shabbat was designed as a day of rest where you could spend one-on-one time with God each week. Observing the Sabbath allows you to revive your soul and grow closer to God.

On the Sabbath, we remember there is a Creator God who made us and wants to guide us. He wants to provide for all our needs, both physically and spiritually.

'And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.' Philippians 4:19.

On the Sabbath we remember what was made for us and why. The Bible tells us our Father in heaven gives good gifts.

On the Sabbath we remember what was made for us and why. The Bible tells us our Father in heaven gives good gifts.

'If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!' Matthew 7:11.

  • Cameroonian Armed Men Release Abducted Cardinal Tumi #rwanda #RwOT

Cardinal Christian Wiyghan Tumi the Archbishop Emeritus of Douala, has been released by armed men that had reportedly kidnapped him on Thursday.

During his kidnap, Cardinal Tumi was in the company of the paramount ruler of Nso. The traditional ruler was heading back to his traditional palace after months of self-imposed exile due to the armed conflicts between government troops and secessionists.

Separatist fighters had mounted a roadblock when they stopped the convoy then swiftly abducted the Cardinal and took him to an unknown location.

Cardinal Tumi, 90, has been vocal in calling for dialogue and peace amid the four-year-long conflict in the North West and South West regions of the country.

Later on Thursday evening, Archbishop Kleda received a phone call from the Cardinal who informed him that he had been interrogated by kidnappers. His subsequent attempts to reach the Cardinal by phone on Friday morning were futile. However, the Cardinal was released later in the day on Friday after spending a night in the den of the kidnappers.

    Cameroon's conflict

Armed separatists, also known as 'Amba boys' have been engaged in an ongoing battle with government troops in their bid to create an independent state which they wish to be called 'Ambazonia.'

The crisis began in 2016 when educational and judicial institutions in the English-speaking North West and South West regions of the bi-lingual country protested the unjustified appointments of French speakers in their territory.

By 2017, the situation had spiralled out of control and had become a full-fledged separatist war. The prolonged conflict has created thousands of casualties and widespread displacement.

School children in the conflict zone have only returned to school this year after almost four year of closures.

Last month, gunmen alleged to be linked to the separatist fighters, opened fire on students at Mother Francisca International Bilingual Academy in Kumba leaving at six of them dead in the deadly attack.

    Vatican and Cameroon

On October 28th during a weekly General Audience, Pope Francis prayed that 'the tormented regions of the North West and South West of the country may find peace.'

The Pope also prayed for the families of the young students killed on 24 October by gunmen at a private school in Kumba.

He expressed sorrow at the 'cruel and senseless act which tore the young innocents from life while they were attending lessons at school.'

  • Today's Prayer From Canterbury Cathedral #rwanda #RwOT

We pray today for our world, that as we move through the phases of the COVID-19 emergency, we would strive for collaboration not conflict between nations:

    God of love,
in whom we are all united,
bring together in your peace all the nations of this world.
Keep us from the temptations of blame and aggression,
to which our grief so often leads,
and help us instead to pursue the ways of
    gentleness, diplomacy, and understanding,
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Lord bless us and keep us, the Lord make his face to shine upon us and be gracious to us, the Lord lift up the light of his countenance upon us and give us peace.

    Amen.
