On December 7, Ghanaians will go cast their ballots to elect the new President and Members of Parliament for various constituencies. The campaigns have already started in the West African country.
However, the opposition registered fears that there is a likelihood of the ruling party to informally use some members of the security to intimidate voters and the opposition supporters.
Last week, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) James Oppong-Boanuh directed that officers performing election duties should wear the traditional police uniforms which are in the colours of blue-black, black, and police camouflage.
Ghana's National Democratic Congress (NDC) political party said; 'this normal dressing requirement for all service personnel should be strictly enforced to assuage fears that some Police uniforms being sewn will find its way into the hands of vigilantes/hoodlums recruited by the ruling Party/government to intimidate and suppress voters in opposition strongholds.'
However, the NDC said it takes seriously information making the rounds that persons other than genuine Police officers some of whom were described as National Security operatives who committed acts of brigandage during the Ayawaso West Wogon bi-election last year will be clothed in such Police uniforms to avoid detection.
NDC further called on the police to further 'keep a register of all personnel who would be deployed at various locations on December 7, and make such a list available in case of any eventuality.'
Meanwhile, incumbent President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo says he is seeking re-election in the December polls. He is competing for the same seat against 11 other candidates. Below are the brief profiles of the presidential candidates in the forthcoming polls.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is 76 years of age and is a lawyer by profession. His highest level of education is a Bachelor of Science in Economics and is married to Rebecca Akufo-Addo. He is contesting his fourth presidential election on December 7, after securing his first win on his third attempt in 2016.
John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress was unseated by the incumbent president in 2016. Coincidentally, he comes second place on the ballot paper, right after his main contender for 2020. Former President Mahama, aged 61 according to the EC is a media and communication person by profession and holds a Post Graduate Diploma in Communication Studies as his highest educational qualification. The former president is married.
Christian Kwabena Andrews founded the Ghana Union Movement ahead of the 2020 presidential election and has been given the third position on the ballot paper by the EC. He is 55 years of age, a teacher and a pastor by profession. He holds a four-year Cert 'A' and is married.
Having been disqualified from contesting in the 2016 elections, Akua Donkor is finally set to have her name on the ballot paper, appearing in the fifth position come December 7. She is 65 years of age, identifies as a farmer and a politician by profession, and holds no formal education qualification. Akua Donkor is married.
Henry Herbert Lartey is a second timer of the Ghanaian presidential election on the ticket of the Great Consolidated Popular Party. As a profession, he is engaged in finance, agro-business and international trade. Mr Lartey is one of two persons with the highest qualification amongst the contenders, an MBA in Economics and Finance and is single. His age is 66.
Having lost the People's National Congress nod to contest the presidency in 2016 after contesting in the 2012 elections, Hassan Ayairga left the party to form the All People's Congress.
Appearing at number seven on the ballot paper, Mr Ayariga aged 48 will be is the youngest candidate in this year's election. He is an accountant by profession with a Bachelor Honorary Doctorate Degree and is married.
Percival Kofi Akpaloo founded his Independent People's Party (IPP) in 2011 but is now set to have his first shot come December 7. He was disqualified by the EC in the 2016 contest. He is an accountant with an MBA in Strategic Management and is married.

Being one of three female candidates, Brigitte Dzogbenuku is the flagbearer of the Progressive Peoples Party founded by veteran presidential candidate, Dr Papa Kwasi Nduom. Aged 51 years, she is an entrepreneur by profession holding a First Degree and is single.
Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings left the National Democratic Congress founded by her husband, former President John Rawlings after being denied the party's flagbearership in 2016.
She formed her own party, the National Democratic Party and gained 0.16% of votes in the 2016 elections. Aged 72 years, Mrs Rawlings will be number 11 on the ballot come December 7.
She is a Management Consultant by profession with a Management Consultancy qualification. She is still married to her husband.
Being the only Independent candidate in the contest, Alfred Kwame Asiedu Walker by default has been given the last spot on the ballot paper for the 2020 presidential contest.
At 64 years, Mr Kwame Walker is a Design Engineer by profession with a Masters Degree and is married.

Ivor Kobina Greenstreet will be contesting the presidency for the second time having contested in 2016 on the ticket of the Convention Peoples Party. Representing the CPP once again he will be fourth on the ballot paper.
Greenstreet is 54 years old, a lawyer with a professional law course certificate and is divorced.

He made the remarks while visiting the Rwanda Chamber of Women Entrepreneurs Forum (RCWE) on Thursday, November 19, 2020.
The Ambassador explained that the UAE has a population of approximately 10million, with 90% being foreigners who live, study & work in the UAE.
He emphasized the notion that: 'The woman is half of the society, any country which pursues development should not leave her in poverty or illiteracy. I am on the woman’s side.'
'Today, by law the UAE Constitution guarantees equal rights to all of its citizens, including women who have the same legal status, to name but a few, the claim to titles, access to education, the right to practice professions, and the right to own as much properties as men do. Women can also own businesses,' said the Ambassador.
He stated that the World Bank’s 2020 Women, Business and the Law Report indicates that the UAE is one of the world’s top ten economies exhibiting the most progress toward gender equality.
The Ambassador explained that Emirati women in the UAE hold two-thirds of public sector jobs, with 30% in leadership roles and 15% in technical and academic roles.
25% of cabinet-level ministerial positions in the UAE are held by women. Women also make up 20% of the UAE’s diplomatic corps.
In October 2008, the first female judge was sworn-in in the UAE. There are currently 4 female judges, 2 public prosecutors and 17 assistant public prosecutors. In March 2019, two female judges were appointed to the Federal Judiciary for the first time.
In Business, the ambassador said that in 2017 the UAE had the highest number of women on Forbes’ 100 Most Powerful Arab Businesswomen with 19 Emirati women on the list.
Today 15% of board level positions nationwide are occupied by Emirati women.
The UAE’s aviation industry employs more female pilots, captains, and aircraft engineers than any other country in the Middle East & Northern Africa region.
Etihad Airways marked International Women’s Day 2019 with an all-female flight for the first time in UAE history. Women Captains piloted the Airbus A380 along with a 19-member all-female cabin crew from 13 nationalities & they were in charge of 398 guests.
In International Development, the Ambassador said that the empowerment and protection of women is one of the key pillars of the UAE’s foreign aid strategy.
The UAE has developed a “100 percent Women” Policy which aims to enhance the UAE’s commitment to the protection of women and girls’ as a part of all UAE funded humanitarian programs and projects implemented in humanitarian crises.
'To date the UAE has dedicated US $322 million for humanitarian initiatives and interventions focused on women and girls.'
In Defense, in 2014 the region’s first military college for women, Khawla bint Al Azwar Military School, opened in the UAE.
The UAE currently has four women fighter pilots and 30 women who work with the country’s special security forces.
The first Emirati and Arab female fighter pilot, Major Mariam Al Mansouri, made international headlines for leading UAE missions against ISIS.
In 2019 a military and peacekeeping training initiative, operated by the UN, in partnership with the UAE Ministry of Defense and the General Women’s Union in the UAE, trained over 130 women from multiple Arab countries.
These cadets have been trained to protect women’s rights, help reduce sexual violence and provide support to women in conflict zones globally.
'This program provides world-class training, physical fitness sessions and leadership development providing the same opportunity and responsibility to female cadets as is available to their male counterparts.' said the Ambassador
Women entrepreneurs were promised support
Women founders and executives of companies in Rwanda are happy with the opportunity but are asking for support in reaching the market.
Jessie Kalisa said she has always had a dream of meeting someone who can take her to the Dubai market and do business.
“I used to dream of meeting someone in Dubai. How do I start a business in Dubai? '
Ambassador Hazza Alqahtani said he would connect them with people who would help them so that they could start investing.
'My advice to you is to get together and open a store. I have no doubt that you will behave well. making baskets, oils, Rwandan coffee, is something that will attract many. '
Other businesses that have been shown to be lucrative include export of fruits; pineapples, oranges, and mangoes.
The Minister of Gender and Family Development, Prof Bayisenge Jeannette, said the government would continue to promote women in business.
'The visit was aimed at exchanging information between the two countries and showing that women have been given the opportunity to thrive. It is to re-energize women and tell them that the country is ready to support them where possible. Opportunities like this are important because it allows them to see where they can better connect with different donors. '
Economists predict that empowering women in investment could boost global gross domestic product by $ 12 billion by 2025.
Statistics from the Rwanda Private Sector (PSF) show that 42% of companies are run by women in the country.
Of the more than 12 million Rwandans, 52% are female. A report by the International Monetary Fund shows that women contribute 30% to the country’s gross domestic product (GDP).

Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) Military Prosecution Department (MPD) has launched investigations into defilement allegations against Sergeant Major Kabera Robert a.k.a 'Sergeant Robert' over his family member. The crime was allegedly committed on 21 November 2020 in Ndera Sector, Gasabo district.
RDF assures the public that justice will take its course and strongly condemns any violation of Rwandan law, or RDF ethics and values by its personnel. Efforts to trace the fugitive are underway.
