  • Kagame participe au G20 et développe les thèmes de l’Environnement, ICT et la femme dans le développement #rwanda #RwOT

    Un impératif du renforcement de la protection de l’environnement
    Paul Kagame trouve que la Communauté internationale doit appliquer l’esprit et la lettre des Accords internationaux sur l’Environnement de Montréal tels que ratifiés à Kigali sur l’éradication des Hydrofluorocarbones (HFCs) qu’on trouve dans les Chambres froides et autres frigidaires.

    “Avec cette lutte pour l’élimination des hydrofluorocarbones, nous sommes à même de diminuer de 0.5 degrés Celsius le réchauffement climatique d’ici 2100, d’après les déclarations des experts en matière d’environnement…”, a dit le Président rwandais Paul Kagame qui encourage le partenariat secteur Public et privé en la matière tel que recommandé par les Accords de Paris sur l’environnement de Décembre 2015, ratifiés à Kigali le 15 Octobre 2016 et mis en application en Novembre 2016.

    Kagame a lancé un appel solennel aux pays de la Communauté internationale qui n’ont pas encore signé ces accords de le faire urgemment pour sauver notre planète Terre.

    Pour ce ui est de l’importance de l’usage et de la culture du numérique, Kagame trouve que l’informatique a révolutionné notre façon de penser et d’agir, que l’informatique occupe une place importante dans l’éducation, la santé et la création de l’emploi. Il encourage la communauté intrnationale à mettre dans ses préoccupations essentielles l’usage et le recours à l’informatique comme outil d’accroissement de la productivité.

    Kagame fait l’éloge de la femme dans la production nationale
    Pour Kagame, la femme dans la famille joue un rôle complet. Pour lui, toutes la activités familiales y compris celles de veiller à la santé des membres .. tournent autour de l’action de la femme au foyer.
    Il a loué la discipline qui a caractérisé la femme rwandaise au cours de la période du confinement et les prestations utiles das la lutte contre la propagation de la pandémie. “La femme non séguéguée, épanouie dans l’égalité des sexes, est la voûte du développement de demain”, a dit Paul.

    Sont membres du G20, l’Argentine, Australia, Brésil, Canada, Chine, France, Allemagne, Inde, Indonesie, Italie, Japan, Coree du Sud, Mexique, Russie, Arabie Saoudite, Afrique du Sud, Turquie, Grande Bretagne,USA et Union Européenne.

    Le Président Kagame y a participé sur le ticket de NEPAD.

  • David Yarrow and Adrian Steirn Release Two Exclusive Works in Support of Space for Giants' Campaign to Stop the Illegal Wildlife Trade #rwanda #RwOT

    For a limited time only, famed wildlife photographers David Yarrow and Adrian Steirn are teaming up with Space for Giants to release two limited-run, never-before-seen wildlife photographs to raise critical funding for Space for Giants' work to end the illegal wildlife trade.

    The pieces will be on sale from Tuesday 10th November until Tuesday 8th December, making this a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.  The photographs will be available for purchase through Heni Editions and retail for $650 each or $1,200 for both. Both are signed and numbered on the reverse. 

    Yarrow's photo, titled 'Space for Giants', was taken at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic and depicts a portrait of one of the last remaining elephant tuskers in the world; Craig. Tuskers are African elephants with tusks so long that they reach the ground, which makes them an especially attractive target for poaching gangs. Today, there are less than 30 tuskers left in the world. 

    The image was made possible by Space for Giants who worked with the Kenya Wildlife Service to guide Yarrow as he explored one of East Africa's most iconic national parks, Amboseli, at a time when, owing to the Covid-19 pandemic, there were no tourists or other photographers in sight. 

    Steirn's image, 'Spotted Cat' is a reflective shot of a majestic leopard standing over a body of water at Singita Sabi Sands. The elusive leopard — one of Africa's great wild cats — is one of the most difficult animals to photograph. Adrian's image is a powerful and rare representation of the imposing predator.

  • Why Team Rwanda Beat 10 Countries At Grand Prix Chantal Biya 2020 #rwanda #RwOT

    Extensive training despite the covid-19 measures helped Rwanda's national cycling team to prepare its six-man strong athletes ahead of the Cameroon hosted Grand Prix Chantal Biya 2020.

    Team coach Felix Sempoma tactically took advantage of Rwanda's hilly terrain and well paved road-network to propel his athletes into a continuous challenge before they flew out of the country to compete in a 699km race in Cameroon.

    Sempoma was handed to coach Team Rwanda in November and has managed to emerge as the best performer of the ten teams that showed up at the Grand Prix Chantal Biya 2020.

    'We're a good team with some experience and young energetic riders. We prepared well,' Sempoma said, adding that he was going to put up a good fight and indeed the 5-day race ended in the hands of Team Rwanda on Sunday.

    At the competition, there were two participating teams from Europe represented by the French military team and Dukkla Banska Bystrica from Slovakia.

    The competing teams included; Dukla Banska Bystrica, Ivory Coast,Burkina Faso, Senegal,Democratic Republic of the Congo, Benin, Rwanda, Mali, Cameroon, and SNH Vélo Club.

    Moïse Mugisha, Rnus Byiza Uhiriwe, Patrick Byukusenge, Didier Munyaneza, Joseph Areruya and Samuel Mugisha are the star performers that carried the Rwandan flag in Cameroon.

    On the onset Moise Mugisha won the first stage race grabbing a Yellow Jersey which he jealously defended throughout the five stages; 'I intend to keep the jersey until the end,' Mugisha said after winning the first stage on 18th November.

    Mugisha's chances to propel Team Rwanda into the race champions status were multiplied after winning stage 4 on Saturday with grand speed in time for 2:46:33.

    The hosts Cameroon were looking forward to win this competition but couldn't come close to the well prepared Rwandans.

    Honore Yossi the head of Cameroon cycling federation said at the official launch of the race on Tuesday that the competition was taking place within a context marked by the Covid-19 pandemic which caused competitions in the federation to be cancelled or postponed for eight months, hence depriving Cameroon cyclists of preparing well for this race.

    On September 22, David Lappartient the President of International Cycling Association (ICA), issued a statement announcing the postponement of the race. The cycling competition had been originally scheduled to take place from October 6-11 but was pushed to November.

    According to the letter of postponement addressed to the Cameroon Cycling Federation, the reason given was due to the non-payment of bills of previous competitions and the strict barrier measures put in place by the Cameroon government in the fight against Covid-19 pandemic.

    cameroon has two competitions in the UCI including; the Tour of Cameroon and the Chantal Biya International Cycling Race.

    It should also be noted that in 2018, Team Rwanda won the Tour of Cameroon. Cyclist Bonaventure Uwizeyimana emerged as the winner of the Tour du Cameroun 2018. Uwizeyimana clocked 21hours, 53 minutes and 20 seconds, meaning he was three minutes and 38 seconds adrift of Haring Martin who was second on the list.

    In the same competition Tour of Cameroon 2018, Patrick Byukusenge came in the fourth place generally having clocked five minutes and 25 seconds behind Uwizeyimana.

    For the past years, Rwandans have adjusted to Cameroon terrain and its two competitions- it is therefore not a surprise that Team Rwanda has taken this year's Chantal Biya International Cycling Race.

    Moïse Mugisha becomes the first Rwandan to win the annual Chantal Biya International Cycling Race.

  • Two violent thieves arrested in Nyaruguru #rwanda #RwOT

    In response, residents apprehended two of the suspected thieves identified as Eric Rwizibura, 37, and Benoît Ntawuhiganayo, 41, and handed them over to Police at Nyagisozi station.

    Superintendent of Police (SP) Theobald Kanamugire, the Police spokesperson for the Southern region, said that on Saturday night, at about 8:30 pm, three thieves intercepted Faustin Mutabazi and his wife Claudine Mukabagire, as they were heading home.

    The couple was traveling on a motorcycle when the thieves stopped them in an attempt to rob them of their valuables.

    “The couple tried to fight the thieves and, in the process, also called out loud for help. Neighboring residents responded to the alarm and apprehended two of the suspected robbers, who had assaulted the couple and had injured Mukabagire in the hand with a machete.

    Unfortunately, the third thief managed to escape with some of the valuables including Frw680, 000 and a smartphone was stolen from the couple,” SP Kanamugire said.

    The residents took the two suspects to Nyagisozi Police station and the couple was taken to Cyahinda health centre for medical care for the sustained wounds.
    According to the spokesperson, one of the suspects, Eric Rwizibura was also wanted over similar crimes in Nyaruguru District, and drug trafficking.

    At the time of his arrest, Rwizibura was also found in possession of one pellet of cannabis.

    SP Kanamugire thanked the residents for the community policing spirit to save the couple and to apprehend the suspected violent criminals.

    The search for the third suspect and recovery of the stolen valuables is still underway.
    Under article 168 of the law determining offences and penalties in general, any person convicted for violent theft face between five and seven years in prison and a fine of between Frw3 million and Frw5 million

  • U.S. Embassy in Rwanda, University of Nebraska Launch Higher Ed Fellowship #rwanda #RwOT

    KIGALI, Nov. 23, 2020 — The U.S. Embassy in Kigali and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln launched today the University Partnerships and Exchange (UPEX) Rwanda Program, an innovative fellowship that will provide mid-career administrators at Rwandan colleges and universities with a year of enrichment and practical training on university advancement and international partnerships.

    'We are proud to support efforts to expand the connections between colleges and universities in Rwanda and the United States,' said U.S. Ambassador to Rwanda Peter H. Vrooman. 'We see this as an important investment in education, helping to position American and Rwandan institutions to take full advantage of all of the opportunities that come with international partnerships in higher education.'

    The U.S. Department of State's Bureau of African Affairs will fund the $250,000 project through the University Partnerships Initiative, created in 2019 to strengthen collaboration in higher education between Africa and the United States. The initiative supports higher education links that expose African students, faculty and administrators to the diversity and innovation on American campuses.

    'The University of Nebraska is thrilled to partner with the U.S. Embassy in Kigali and Rwandan universities on this exciting initiative,' said Josh Davis, associate vice chancellor for global affairs. 'The UPEX-Rwanda program is particularly innovative as we leverage our strengths in virtual exchange to engage with new institutional partners and help develop their international partnership capacity.'

    The program builds on the University of Nebraska's successful partnerships in Rwanda and across Africa in recent years, including hosting multiple leadership institutes for the Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders; more than 200 full scholarships for Rwandan students through the CASNR Undergraduate Scholarship Program; and advising on recruitment and curriculum design for the new Rwanda Institute for Conservation Agriculture.

    Nebraska's Office of Global Strategies will lead the UPEX-Rwanda fellows through a year-long virtual training program beginning in January. Each month, the cohort will participate in workshops led by content experts in international partnership management from across the United States and Rwanda, apply best practices in case studies and site visits, and meet virtually with a U.S.-based mentor. Key concepts covered in the program include the internationalization of higher education, strategic partnership management, grant writing and project implementation. At the conclusion of the program, the cohort will also present an international partnership proposal and organize a symposium on university partnerships.

  • Les citoyens construisent leur bureau de rencontre de quartier à Kimironko (Est de Kigali) #rwanda #RwOT

    Ces bureaux construits auront coûté 15 millions de francs. Il est rapporté que l’idée de construire ces bureaux est venue après que les habitants de ce Mudugudu ont discuté entre eux de la possibilité de participer à des réunions de gestion de leur quartier en toute décence. Auparavant ces réunions convoquées après les travaux communautaires et autres se faisaient sous l’ombrage des arbres, rapportent les habitants de ce quartier qui ont collecté le montant nécessaire pour ce projet.

    “Nous n’avons pas uniquement construit ces bureaux. Nous avons rassemblé d’autres contributions pour construire des caniveaux et autres infrastructures “, a confié au umuseke.rw, M. J.B. Katabarwa, chef de quartier qui a tenu à souligner que les habitants de ce quartier tiennent à tout prix à verser régulièrement leurs contributions mensuelles d’hygiène publique et de propreté des rues.

    Les autorités de district Gasabo invitées à la cérémonie sont fières de ce gestes des habitants de ce quartier qui ont tenu à ce que leurs dirigeants aient des bureaux avenants et une salle de réunions suffisamment spacieuse.

    Il va de soi qu’un tel geste aurait dû être prolongé par une idée plus culturelle. Au moment où les Pouvoirs publics sensibilisent les gens et leurs enfants à la lecture, ces habitants devraient aller plus loin et penser être de bons modèles pour d’autres quartiers en se contruisantun espace de lecture et en l’équipant de livres attractifs.

    La suite viendrait de soi. Le Bureau de Mudugudu pourrait être un centre communautaire parfait où les gens peuvent, après une journée de travail, passer pour s’y détendre culturellement.

  • Police warn believers against prohibited gatherings #rwanda #RwOT

    The warning follows different cases where many people have been caught in such prohibited and risky gatherings in homes.

    In the latest similar violation, Police and local leaders in Gatsibo District, on Saturday, November 21, caught 39 people, who were gathered in a resident’s house, praying.

    The violators were gathered in the house of one John Barahirwa, 25, located in Simbwa Cell, Kabarore Sector, contrary to the directives against further spread of the COVID-19.

    Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Hamdun Twizeyimana, the Police spokesperson for the Eastern region, said that the prohibited gathering was reported by grassroots leaders in the area.

    “All the violators are members of the Seventh Day Adventist church. They were found congested in a small room with no one wearing a facemask, following a sermon from their leaders; Aloys Hategekimana and Jonas Ndikumana,” CIP Twizeyimana said.

    All the violators were subjected to administrative fines and sensitized on the threat of the COVID-19, national directives and health guidelines.

    The spokesperson warned against such risky behaviors and actions, which can derail the national response efforts to curb the pandemic.

    “The government directives and safety guidelines are very clear and must be followed. Those who hold such illegal gatherings are not only threats to their lives, but also to their families’ and respective communities’.

    This means that everyone has a role to play to prevent these risky practices through information sharing on violations happening in neighborhoods,” CIP Twizeyimana said.
