  • President Kagame emphasizes the need to accelerate digital connectivity #rwanda #RwOT

    President Paul Kagame has emphasised the need to accelerate digital connectivity, saying that the Covid-19 pandemic has shown that it is not a luxury.

    He was speaking during the ninth board meeting of Smart Africa, an alliance of African countries seeking to promote digital transformation.

    'The pandemic has shown that connectivity is not a luxury. It is a necessity,' he told Heads of State and Government, and other leaders who attended the virtual meeting.

    Kagame said on Monday, December 7, that the provision of education and health services depends on digital infrastructure.

    'The good jobs of the future will also rely on technology skills and a digital identity,' he noted, adding that Smart Africa's mission is to do just that.

    Smart Africa's mission is to define the continent's digital agenda and drive the continental single digital market, all this is done through a series of projects and activities.

    Under the current arrangement, each member country spearheads a project that is aligned with Smart Africa's vision. 

    Smart Africa has gained seven more members since the last board meeting held in 2019. That brings the total membership to 31 countries.

    The new members are Algeria, Cabo Verde, Republic of Congo, Mauritania, Morocco, Sierra Leone, and Zimbabwe.

    The organization also saw new membership from the private sector, including Tahaluf Al Emarat, BICS, and Softbank.

    Kagame emphasised the importance of private sector partnership to realize Smart Africa's core goals.

    'We place a high value on what you as business leaders bring to these efforts,' he noted.

    The Head of State added that they will work with the private sector to make the necessary investments.

    'This is especially evident in the process of recovering from Covid,' he said.

    The meeting was attended by leaders of Burkina Faso, Congo-Brazzaville, Djibouti, DRC, Ethiopia, Guinea, Mali, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

  • South Africa's ANC Party May Force SG To Step Aside #rwanda #RwOT

    Ace Magashule the Secretary General of South Africa's ruling party ANC, has no other way out left but being forced to step aside.

    The adamant politician considered the next in queue for the presidency is charged with 21 counts of corruption, money laundering and gross fraud.

    According to the party, a resolution was adopted in August that whenever a member is being investigated, they are required to first step aside to allow due processing of their cases.

    However, Ace Magashule seems to have a different interpretation of the resolution on stepping aside. He believes that some other factions are hellbent on ensuring his down fall.

    President Cyril Ramaphosa on Tuesday appeared at the party's highest decision making organ, National Executive Committee and called on the organ to respect its own decisions and excersise what he termed as 'Revolutionary Political Consciousness'.

    In essence, Ramaphosa was referring to those found or implicated on allegations of wrongdoing to step aside.

    'The challenge is not implementation of NEC resolutions. There is a far deep problem of revolutionary discipline and consciousness,'He said.

    The president added that as members of a revolutionary organization are all bound by their constitution, 'by resolutions of our conferences and by the decisions of our structures'.

    'If he defies the instructions by the party's NWC, then the NWC may consider disciplinary action against the SG according to rule 25.3,'according to Advocate Malindi Gcina based in South Africa.

  • Chinese Firm Inks Deal With Rwanda To Set Up Bamboo Factory #rwanda #RwOT

    A Chinese company has signed a concession agreement with government to grow bamboo in the country for industrial use on a large scale.

    East Africa Bamboo Forest Industry Limited will plant, manage and harvest around 2,300 hectares of bamboo in Kigali, Bugesera, Ngoma and Rwamagana districts.

    The company will set up a bamboo processing factory in Kicukiro distdistrict, locally manufacture various products.

    Products will include toilet paper and other sanitary products, construction materials such as marine board and ply-wood for sale in local and export markets.

    The agreement was signed on Monday December 7, at Rwanda Development Board (RDB).

  • Rwanda Fresh Update: 189,817Kg Of Horticulture Products Exported Last Week #rwanda #RwOT

    Rwanda last week fetched a total of US$455,490 from horticulture products shipped out of the country weighing 189,817Kg. The consignment included; fruits, vegetables and flowers.

    According to Rwanda Fresh, both export quantities and revenues increased by 20.6% and 17% respectively.

    The destinations of these fruits, vegetables and flowers are; DRC, Holland, Vietnam, United Kingdom, Dubai, France, Belgium, Germany, Tanzania, Uganda and the United States.

    Meanwhile, Claude Bizimana the Chief Executive Officer of National Agricultural Export Development Board said last week that market linkage opportunities between exporters and buyers are being made to increase Rwanda's export volumes to the UAE.

    'A contract has been signed with Carrefour, a global company that will boost the increase of income from agri-export value chains,' Bizimana said during the Young Farmers' Forum Breakfast meeting on December 4.

    'If you don't know what you want, the world will not help you. You need to know that you are very important people. Be aggressive & get what you need to do your business from our institutions, we are here for you,' said Gerardine Mukeshimana, Minister of Agriculture.

    The forum was held under the theme 'Moving from traditional to modern commercial farming towards Rwanda's economic growth.'

    According to organisers, this forum brings together key players in Rwandan agriculture sector to deliberate on challenges faced by young farmers involved in agriculture value chain.

  • Allan & Gill Gray Philanthropy To Set Up Office In Rwanda To Support Entrepreneurial Development #rwanda #RwOT

    Rwanda has signed a Host Country Agreement with Allan & Gill Gray Philanthropy (AGGP) to promote entrepreneurship skills development and employment for young Rwandans.

    Rwanda will also become a hub of the organisation in the Eastern Africa region.

    AGGP's vision is to alleviate poverty through job creation by supporting high potential individuals to become high impact, responsible entrepreneurs.

    The activities of the organisation will be implemented under two programs; Jasiri and Wavumbuzi.

    Jasiri will offer a one year Talent Investor program for high potential individuals who display exceptional entrepreneurial potential and drive to take their aspirations through the entire entrepreneurial development journey towards launching and growing their businesses.

    The Jasiri Accelerator will support businesses created through the Talent Investor program as well as existing businesses that show potential for significant growth by addressing critical barriers to entrepreneurship success.

    The Wavumbuzi Entrepreneurship Challenge, an online program, will nurture entrepreneurial mindsets and shift perceptions of the value of entrepreneurship among secondary school students.

    Anthony Farr, CEO of Allan & Gill Gray Philanthropy, said that for the 21st century to genuinely be the African century, we have no choice but to harness the full potential of the entrepreneurial spirit across the continent.

    'After 15 years in this field, in establishing a regional hub in Rwanda and launching the Jasiri and Wavumbuzi programs, we seek to give further energy and support to the increasing momentum of the entrepreneurial activity and leadership in the country,' he said.

  • Students From Kenya National Defence College Visit Rwanda #rwanda #RwOT

    A delegation of students and faculty members from Kenya National Defence College is in Rwanda for a study tour from 4 to 11 December 2020.

    Today December 7, 2020 the delegation led by the College's faculty member, Maj Gen Rashid Abdi Elmi, paid a courtesy call to the RDF Chief of Defence Staff General Jean Bosco KAZURA and were briefed on the roles and organisation of the Rwanda Defence Force.

    The Head of delegation Maj Gen Elmi had this to say: 'Our study tour aims at enriching the students knowledge on security issues in Rwanda and the region'.

    The delegation's tour is expected to cover all aspects affecting security including socioeconomic and political issues, environmental security, foreign policy as well as culture.

    The course participants are undergoing a one-year program preparing them for a better understanding of global issues.

    The delegation started its tour to Rwanda by visiting the Kigali Genocide Memorial and The Campaign against Genocide Museum.

    They also visited Zigama CSS, Military Medical Insurance, Horizon Ltd and Rwanda Military Hospital.

  • Rwanda reports 45 new COVID-19 cases #rwanda #RwOT

    The statement released last night shows that new cases were found in Kigali (16), Musanze (21), Rusizi (3), Nyagatare (2), Rubavu (2) and Muhanga (1).

    Rwanda confirmed the first case on 14th March 2020.

    The latest figures brought the total number of COVID-19 patients to 6129 out of 644,631 sample tests of whom 5696, representing 92.9%, have recovered, 382 are active cases while 51 have succumbed to the virus.

    Coronavirus symptoms include coughing, flu, and difficulty in breathing. The virus is said to be transmitted through the mucous membranes of the respiratory tract.

    Rwandans are urged to adhere to COVID-19 health guidelines, washing hands frequently using soaps and safe water, wearing face masks and respecting social distancing.
