  • Manchester United Told Sell Pogba #rwanda #RwOT

The France midfielder's agent, Mino Raiola, came out on Monday and said it's 'over' for Pogba at United to once again cast doubts over his future.

Pogba is said to be 'unhappy' in Manchester and Raiola believes the 'best solution' is for him to leave United as early as January, when the transfer window reopens.

Raiola has been widely criticised for speaking out, rather than Pogba doing so himself — especially as Raiola's quotes came just one day ahead of a crunch Champions League clash with RB Leipzig and with the Manchester derby to follow at the weekend.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer now has a big decision on his hands with only weeks to go before the transfer window opens once again, with 'Pogba in' or 'Pogba out' a huge dilemma.

Meanwhile, Manchester is being urged to sign up for Mesut Ozil as replacement for Pogba.

  • Ethiopia's PM Abiy Ahmed To Enter Kenya By Road #rwanda #RwOT

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed will visit Kenya on Wednesday for a two-day State visit- he will enter through the porous border with Kenya.

Kenya Presidency handlers said on Tuesday that the Ethiopian PM will arrive in the country from Moyale in Marsabit County that borders his country. This is a stack contrast and a departure from a tradition where he lands at Nairobi's Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).

'In Moyale, President Kenyatta and Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed will tour and officially open the Moyale One-Stop Border Post (OSBP),' State House said in a statement that announced the visit.

Kenya and Ethiopia share a porous border stretching 861 kilometers traversing Marsabit, Turkana, Wajir and Mandera counties.

President Uhuru Kenyatta and Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed will visit Lamu County where they will inspect the ongoing construction of the new Lamu Port, an anchor project of the Lamu Port-South Sudan-Ethiopia-Transport (LAPSSET) Corridor.

Abiy's visit to Kenya comes at a time his government is engaged in a security operation in Tigray, the northern part of the county where it has dislodged a militia group.

Abiy announced military operations in the northern region a month ago, saying they targeted the leaders of its ruling party, the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF).

Last week he declared victory, saying fighting was 'completed' after federal forces entered the regional capital Mekele. But the TPLF has vowed to fight on.

  • Burundi & European Union Return To Talks After 5 Frozen Years #rwanda #RwOT

Burundi and the European Union resumed dialogue on Monday after five years of frozen relations due to disagreements on a number of issues.

President Gen. Evariste Ndayishimiye allowed all envoys of EU member states with residence in Burundi to meet with him at the State house known as Ntare Rushatsi Palace.

The last formal discussions between Burundi and the European Union were on March 2016 when the Council unilaterally concluded the consultation procedure with Burundi under article 96 of the EU-ACP partnership agreement, known as the Accord from Cotonou.

Burundi had never ceased to remind its partner that the invocation of Article 96 of the Cotonou Agreement in the face of the situation in Burundi had been precipitated, in May 2015, in the wake of the insurgency and upheavals that led to the coup attempt of May 13, 2015.

The Government of the Republic of Burundi has always accused its partner, the European Union, of being the sponsor of this instability, while the European Union suspended direct financial support to the State of Burundi, including budgetary support.

The EU has been accusing Burundi of 'not respecting democratic principles and values, human rights and the rule of law on the basis of the Cotonou Agreement and the principles set out in the Arusha Agreement'.

President Ndayishimiye reminded the envoys that the moment is well chosen given the situation of peace and security which prevails throughout the country, the massive return of refugees, the warming of relations with Rwanda.

He also emphasized Burundi's role both on the regional and international scene and the diplomatic successes achieved by Burundi until it is withdrawn from the political agenda of the UN Security Council.

Walking Away From The Ugly Past

The European Union in Burundi said, 'it is high time to resolve misunderstandings with mutual respect' and appreciated the soothing speech of President Ndayishimiye and his policy of openness, which constitute 'a basis solid for the resumption of good cooperation between the European Union and Burundi in a dynamic of mutually beneficial and advantageous partnership and nothing would justify dragging our feet.'

The two sides agreed to break free from the past and look to the future by rebuilding their relationship based on the 6 priorities of President Ndayishimiye including; good governance, public health, education, agriculture and livestock, free healthcare for retirees and youth development.

The European Union promised to do everything in its power to ensure that the European Union supports the responsible and laborious institutions of Burundi in this new impetus towards development, in accordance with the priority areas contained in the National Development Plan 2018-2027.

The President of the Republic recommended that this dialogue continue on the technical level at the level of the Ministry having foreign affairs in its attributions, confident that the success of the reestablishment of good relations between the European Union and Burundi is already on a good footing path.

At the end of this audience, Claude Bochu, Representative of the European Union in Burundi indicated that they were received by Burundi President at their request.

He welcomed the climate in which the meeting took place and insisted that this hearing was the first (under the Cotonou Agreement) for 5 years.

  • Bill Gates Says Covid-19 Accelerated Digital Financial Revolution #rwanda #RwOT

At the ongoing annual Singapore FinTech Festival x Singapore Week of Innovation & TeCHnology (SFF x SWITCH), Microsoft founder Bill Gates has observed that the Covid-19 pandemic has been instrumental in supercharging the digital revolution.

Gates said this situation is disrupting and presents regulators with an opportunity to narrow financial inequities in their countries.

'Digital things overall, whether it's remote learning, or telemedicine, or digital finance, were greatly advanced. So even though the pandemic has been terrible, it has pushed for some of these innovations,' Bill Gates said.

He observed that, 'In this area (of) digital financial inclusion, it's gotten the governments to say, wow, we really need to fix this.'

He said the said the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is working toward enabling two-thirds of the world to gain financial access within the next 10 years.

Bill Gates cited World Bank data showing the disparity in financial access across the world — as at 2017, 94 per cent of adults in high-income countries had an account either with a bank, financial institution or mobile-money service provider. This proportion fell to 35% in low-income countries.

Countries like India and Kenya have in recent years put in place technologies to improve digital financial inclusion, the billionaire said.

His foundation supports India's nationwide open-source identity platform MOSIP (Modular Open Source Identity Platform), which serves as the backbone for effective delivery of public and private services.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, this platform enabled authorities to channel financial help digitally to millions who were locked down in their villages.

Central banks and financial institutions are key to facilitating financial inclusion in a digital age, Gates noted.

The foundation's work involves getting central banks comfortable with these new approaches, when they see the success and that the open-source toolkit has worked to track down mistakes and make the systems reliable, he said.

And in some ways, they may find these approaches better than cash, as central banks 'can go back and audit what's going on', Gates added. 'We think over the next five years most of the central banks will see it's okay to do this, because the building blocks are very accessible and there is almost a straightforward way that they can get their citizens all connected up.'
