  • Singapore Fintech Festival: SMEs in Poor Countries To Access Global Value Chains #rwanda #RwOT

    A partnership between the UNDP Global Centre for Technology, Innovation and Sustainable Development and the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) is expected to help small enteprises in developing countries access global value chains.

    The partnership deal is the latest announcement made on the sidelines of the ongoing Singapore Fintech Festival.

    According to details, the partnership will provide SMEs with digital and financial tools to help them better leverage data and access financing solutions, as well as opportunities for SMEs, including fintechs, to expand to developing countries through the UNDP's global network of 170 offices.

    As a start, UNDP and MAS will bring together three existing programmes — Cultiv@te, Business sans Borders (BSB) and API Exchange (APIX) — to support SMEs in accessing solutions and selling their products.

    Cultiv@te is a UNDP agri-tech programme that sources for solutions from startups and research and development teams worldwide; BSB is a joint initiative by MAS and the Infocomm Media Development Authority to provide an open and global digital infrastructure for seamless trade discovery and digital business services connectivity.

    APIX is a cross-border open innovation platform supported by the MAS, which serves as a curated global marketplace for application programming interfaces (APIs) for financial institutions and fintechs.

    The combination of these three programmes will facilitate SMEs' global outreach and provide them access to innovative financial and digital tools, UNDP and MAS said.

    Solutions developed by finalists in the Cultiv@te programme will be listed on the BSB hub, making them accessible to SMEs across the UNDP's focus countries.

    SMEs can use the solutions to improve their agriculture production, and then sell the crops to a global market and take up financing options via the same BSB platform.

    UNDP and MAS plan to explore country-specific use cases in Africa to get more SMEs to adopt digital finance.

    SMEs with suitable capabilities would be provided access to the APIX platform and its financial sector APIs to test and develop financing solutions for trade, climate resilience, urban farming and more.

    In addition, UNDP and MAS will pilot the use of blockchain technology for product identification, validation and traceability in traditional supply chains such as agriculture and food products, building on UNDP's studies on blockchain applications for food traceability.

    Such technology solutions would give the SMEs and their products greater credibility in the eyes of international buyers, and help the businesses access more opportunities on a global level.

    Finally, UNDP is open to connecting its innovation efforts to the BSB hub Sandbox, a repository of data and problem statements, to help design and develop solutions to improve services for SMEs.

    Said Bradley Busetto, director of the UNDP Global Centre Singapore; 'SMEs drive growth in the developing world, and strong, digitally-linked SMEs are crucial to the world's recovery from the pandemic. We are thrilled to partner with MAS to help prototype and scale innovative financial solutions across the developing world.'

    Sopnendu Mohanty, chief fintech officer at MAS, noted that technology advances have made it possible to integrate financial-service solutions across sectors, such as using fintech to power agri-trades.

    'The close cooperation between MAS and UNDP to leverage Cultiv@te, BSB and APIX will make technology and financial services more accessible to parts of the regional and global economy and bring about more inclusive growth,' he said.

  • Museveni Looking For Votes In Boarder District Ntungamo #rwanda #RwOT

    Incumbent President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda is in Ntungamo district bordering Rwanda on his third day of engagements in Ankole region as he looks for votes.

    According to Museveni, he was born in Ntungamo Uganda at around September 15, 1944 in Kyamate village where he also attended Primary school.

    'Our third day of engagements in Ankole region will be in Ntungamo District where I will meet our youth and other NRM party leaders,' Museveni said.

    Museveni has been unveiling infrastructure projects along his campaign trail. The projects include tarmac roads, factories, central markets and other projects.

    'I commissioned the Kashenyi-Mitooma & Katabi seminary access road. This road was fully funded by your taxes and we expect it to ease the transportation of people and products (especially) for dairy farmers,' Museveni said on Tuesday while in Bushenyi district.

    Meanwhile, Presidential Candidate Robert Kyagulanyi under the National Unity Platform is combing through the West Nile Region of Uganda considered to be a major opposition stronghold. The region is birth place to former President Idi Amin.

    'This is history in the making! The people of Yumbe have spoken loud and clear, they want change. Thank you brothers and sisters for the massive welcome,' Kyagulanyi expressed his satisfaction at the massive turnout to his campaign rally.

    Kyagulanyi has managed to attract mammoth rallies in Koboko, Yumbe and Arua. However, despite such bigger crowds, the voters in this region are known to change their mind at the ballot box.

  • Tanzania Government Confused About Rising Cement Prices #rwanda #RwOT

    Tanzania's Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa has warned traders against hording cement with profiteering motives saying the practice tantamount to economic sabotage and threatened that such people will be dealt with in accordance with the law.

    Majaliwa warned during a televised address to regional commissioners, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Industry and Trade, acting Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Transport, regional trade officers and executives from various cement manufacturing firms.

    He has also directed the Ministry of Industry and Trade to set price caps for cement  in a deliberate move to stop what he described as haphazard price increases by unscrupulous traders.

    'We must understand what is happening on the ground, the cement which is produced in Dar-es-Salaam and Tanga should not be sold at highest Price in Morogoro, Majaliwa warned.

    The tough speaking Premier called upon the Fair Competition Commission (FCC) to conduct thorough investigations into the cement subsector with a view of establishing whether the product was being sold at fair prices or not in several locations of the country.

    'We expect FCC to come up with the report even before reaching to this stage, you must elaborate what is happening, why the price is going up while there is no increase of prices on raw materials,' Majaliwa said.

    Ministry of Industry and Trade has been ordered to undertake visits to cement manufacturers with a view to understand their concerns so that they can come up with solutions.

  • Briefing: Rwanda International Trade Fair #Expo2020 #rwanda #RwOT

    The forthcoming Rwanda International Trade Fair is scheduled for December 11, 2020. A joint Presser is being conducted to update the media on how this Expo will be held especially under the guidelines for preventing the further spread of Covid-19.

    Representatives from the Private Sector Federation (Good Ruzibiza the CEO), the Rwanda National Police (CP JB Kabera) and the Ministry of Trade and Industry (Sam Kamugisha Director General, Department of Industry Promotion and Entrepreneurship Development ) are at the press conference.

    The trade fair which starts on December 11 and will run through December 31 at Gikondo Expo Grounds — this edition children aged below 12 will not be allowed.

    According to CP JB Kabera the Rwanda National Police Spokesperson, talking about security and safety in Expo, the Police intends to set up a station at the expo grounds.
