  • Rwanda records 46 new COVID-19 cases, 19 recoveries #rwanda #RwOT

    The statement released last night shows that new cases were found in Kigali: 24, Rubavu: 10, Bugesera: 6, Kirehe: 3, Rusizi: 2 and Rwamagana: 1.

    Rwanda confirmed the first COVID-19 case on 14th March 2020.

    So far 6237 people have been infected out of 650,688 sample tests of which 5715 have recovered, 471 are active cases while death toll stands at 51.

    Coronavirus symptoms include coughing, flu, and difficulty in breathing. The virus is said to be transmitted through the mucous membranes of the respiratory tract.

    Rwandans are urged to adhere to COVID-19 health guidelines, washing hands frequently using soaps and safe water, wearing face masks and respecting social distancing.

  • Rwanda, Finland sign MoU on political consultations with Finland #rwanda #RwOT

    They discussed areas of common interests and ways to increase multilateral cooperation between the two countries.

    Dr Biruta said that the MoU is expected to boost cooperation and pave the way for further agreements between institutions from both countries.

    'We have signed basic Memorandum of Understanding enabling cooperation between both countries. It is a broad MoU introducing more agreements in different areas,' he said.

    He explained that discussions revolved around seeking how to engage different institutions into cooperation in the areas of climate change resilience, mining and education.

    In the area of environment preservation, Dr Biruta revealed that both countries plan to cooperate on helping factories to find alternatives for plastic bags, mining and vocational education.

    Kai Sauer is expected to meet with other officials from different institutions including Rwanda Development Board (RDB), mining sector and environment management authority.

    Since 2017 until 2019, trade between Rwanda and Finland increased by 21% from US$12.8 million to US$12.8 million.

  • Soraya expresses concern over SMEs slow uptake of digitalization #rwanda #RwOT

    The recent research published by the University of Rwanda (UR) and Business Professionals Network (BPN Rwanda) indicated that only 18% of Small and Medium Enterprises embraced technology in their operations.

    As she participated in discussions on 'Harnessing digital transformation for SMEs Challenges and Opportunities’ organized by MTN Rwanda, Minister Soraya emphasized the need to mobilize SMEs to tap into opportunities technology is posed to offer.

    'There are still worrying figures. The recent research the University of Rwanda and BPN Rwanda reported that only 18% of SMEs have embraced digital transformation. The COVID-19 pandemic which awakened people to embrace technology didn’t largely impact Small and Medium Enterprises. There is a need to establish why they don’t embrace technology,' she said.

    'These figures evidence how Small and Medium Enterprises are reluctant to embrace technology. It is a market for our tech-firms and a task for the Government to conduct mobilizations bringing knowledge and other necessities in the use of technology among these enterprises,' added Soraya.

    These virtual discussions were also attended by MTN Rwanda CEO, Mitwa Kaemba Ng’ambi, the Chairman of the Private Sector Federation (PSF), Stephen Ruzibiza among other representatives of business institutions.

    Technology is among key pillars that could lead to business growth especially during COVID-19 pandemic where it enables direct engagement with customers.

    Minister Soraya emphasized the need to mobilize SMEs to tap into opportunities technology is posed to offer.

  • Shopping Mall To Replace Bujumbura Central Market Burnt In 2013 #rwanda #RwOT

    Burundi President Evariste Ndayishimiye summoned members of cabinet to discuss a score of issues including the fast tracking of a proposed plan to build a modern shopping mall at the site of former Bujumbura Central Market that was mysteriously burnt in 2013.

    'The Council of Ministers met this morning to analyze, among other issues, the ABEF's request to government to build a large shopping center on the site of the former central market in Bujumbura,' the Burundi Presidency said early Wednesday.

    ABEF or simply l'Association des Banques et Etablissements Financiers (Association of Banks and Financial Institutions) submitted a proposal to the government seeking to prop up a giant shopping mall instead of a market.

    On January 27, 2013, residents of Bujumbura commercial city woke up to utter shock and disbelief as columns of thick smoke scaled the skies — the Central market was in flames- the fire broke out at 6.30 am in ward 4 in a stand which contained clothes and electronic equipment (TV and DVD).

    Fire fighters, security and the city dwellers tried to stop the fire but were unsuccessful because they were overwhelmed by the scale of the flames. The market built in 1994 on a 3-hectare plot, had more or less 3,000 operational stands with nearly 7,000 occupants. It was considered the lifeblood of the national economy.

    Seven years later the scars of this incident are still visible.

    Since 2014, the government of Burundi has been attempting to build a new market but somehow along the way the process keeps collapsing. The international invitation to tender has not yielded the expected results.

    In September 2018, cabinet adopted a memorandum of understanding for the construction of this economic infrastructure. A Chinese company Jiangxi Jianglian International Engineering won a contract.

    Previous Proposals

    In 2016, a cabinet meeting was held and three options had been considered by an ad hoc committee, which was to take into account the role played by the central market and the missions that would be assigned to the new infrastructure.

    This involves the construction of this large center, the reconstruction of the old infrastructure and the transfer of the former central market in its current state to a private operator.

    'The first option relating to the construction of a mall is adopted,' a government official Philippe Nzobonariba said then.

    According to cabinet at that time, financing would be sourced within the framework of the public-private partnership which to them seemed to include more advantages compared to other modes of financing.

  • Museveni Looking For Votes In Border District Ntungamo #rwanda #RwOT

    Incumbent President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda is in Ntungamo district bordering Rwanda on his third day of engagements in Ankole region as he looks for votes.

    According to Museveni, he was born in Ntungamo Uganda at around September 15, 1944 in Kyamate village where he also attended Primary school.

    'Our third day of engagements in Ankole region will be in Ntungamo District where I will meet our youth and other NRM party leaders,' Museveni said.

    Museveni has been unveiling infrastructure projects along his campaign trail. The projects include tarmac roads, factories, central markets and other projects.

    'I commissioned the Kashenyi-Mitooma & Katabi seminary access road. This road was fully funded by your taxes and we expect it to ease the transportation of people and products (especially) for dairy farmers,' Museveni said on Tuesday while in Bushenyi district.

    Meanwhile, Presidential Candidate Robert Kyagulanyi under the National Unity Platform is combing through the West Nile Region of Uganda considered to be a major opposition stronghold. The region is birth place to former President Idi Amin.

    'This is history in the making! The people of Yumbe have spoken loud and clear, they want change. Thank you brothers and sisters for the massive welcome,' Kyagulanyi expressed his satisfaction at the massive turnout to his campaign rally.

    Kyagulanyi has managed to attract mammoth rallies in Koboko, Yumbe and Arua. However, despite such bigger crowds, the voters in this region are known to change their mind at the ballot box.
