  • Rusesabagina Sues GainJet Aviation Company For Kidnapping Him #rwanda #RwOT

    High level terrorism suspect Paul Rusesabagina,66, currently in a Rwandan jail, has through his lawyers sued Greek operator business aviation GainJet for aiding his kidnap and eventual repatriation to Rwanda.

    On Monday afternoon, Rusesabagina's lawyers filed a 90-page lawsuit in a US based San Antonio federal court suing GainJet Aviation and an accomplice identified as Constantin Niyomwungere.

    The suit is Lodged as Rusesabagina v. GainJet Aviation, 20-cv-1422, U.S. District Court, Western District of Texas (San Antonio).

    'This case arises out of a conspiracy of the Rwandan government and defendants GainJet and Constantin Niyomwungere to engage in the unlawful extradition, arbitrary detention, and torture of Paul Rusesabagina,' states the 90-page lawsuit.

    According to sources, a similar case is expected be lodged in Belgium where terror suspect Rusesabagina holds citizenship and a US green-card holder.

    Other details also indicate that Rusesabagina, his wife and their six children are named as plaintiffs in the suit.

    Although the arrest and extradition of Rusesabagina remains mysterious due to limited details of the entire process, it is alleged that in August was asked to leave his home in San Antonio, Texas, and travel to Burundi through Dubai to speak at churches and at public gatherings about his experience during the 1994 genocide against Tutsi which claimed a million lives.

    However, when Rusesabagina got to Dubai and boarded a plane chartered by GainJet, a private airline based in Athens, Greece, he expected to be taken to Burundi for this speaking circuit.

    Instead, he alleges he was joined by Niyomwungere, an alleged 'Rwandan operative,' and taken to Kigali, where Rusesabagina 'had previously sworn that he would never return.'

    Rusesabagina claims GainJet's pilot and co-pilot were responsible for their passengers' safety yet did nothing when the plane landed in Kigali instead of Burundi.

    'GainJet and its employees and agents did not issue any international 'Mayday' call or 'squawk '7700' on the radio — the internationally recognized code for distress or an emergency situation in flight,' Robert Hilliard, the Rusesabagina family's lawyer, said in a 90-page law suit.

    However, President Paul Kagame said after Rusesabagina's arrest that Rwanda did nothing wrong in the arrest of Rusesabagina because he was arrested under an international warrant for leading 'terrorist movements'.

    'Rwanda may not be doing well and they may really want to change things but the method they use by killing people is not acceptable,' Kagame explained. Rusesabagina is on record for publicly heading the National Liberation Front (FLN) and Rwandan Movement for Democratic Change (MRCD) and priding their actions of killing, looting, kidnapping and destroying infrastructure in communities surrounding Nyungwe National Park forest in Southern Rwanda.

    'He will have to answer for all these actions,' President Kagame said, Rusesabagina has blood on his hands,' his foreign backers can only help him to prop him as a movie hero but he will have to answer for killing Rwandans whether he likes or not.'

    Charges

    According Rwanda's prosecution, Rusesabagina is accused of creation and being part of an irregular armed group, financing terrorism, terror activities for political gains, conspiracy to commit terror activities, commanding terror acts and being part of a terrorist group.

    Rusesabagina is also battling charge of conspiracy and encouraging others to join a terror group, conspiracy to murder, conspiracy to kidnap, conspiracy to armed robbery, conspiracy to commit arson, conspiracy to aggravated assault and conspiracy to conscript children in an armed group.

  • 55 people arrested for drunk-driving last week #rwanda #RwOT

    This was revealed yesterday as Rwanda National Police (RNP) spokesperson, CP John Bosco Kabera explained new directives and other issued guidelines meant to guarantee the health of every resident of Rwanda from the COVID-19.

    “We understand that there are some services, like restaurants and hotels, that disregard the directives by operating bars. In the last week alone, Police arrested 55 people, who were driving while drunk,” CP Kabera said.

    “In partnership with other entities, we are inspecting service providers to ensure physical distancing; there should be recommended distance of at least 2 metres between tables and 1.5 metres between chairs in hotels and restaurants. We are inspecting if hand washing and measuring body temperature is respected in all services,” he added.

    The spokesperson also reminded all residents of Rwanda to respect the movement hours.

    “By 9pm, you should be home and only leave at 4am, but from December 22, up to January 4, 2021, we expect everyone to be home by 8pm.

    However, for those in Musanze District, we don’t expect any movements by 7pm. If you are transiting through Musanze, do it before 7pm,” CP Kabera said.

    To those holding vigils and burial ceremonies, he said, it should be done in compliance with the directives so as not to attract Police intervention.

    “We are entering the festive period, we urge all residents of Rwanda to avoid any social gatherings. Police doesn’t wish to be in anyone’s home for any violations; no one should be forced to wear a facemask, wash hands, or apply physical distancing. Workforce should not exceed the required number, 30 percent at a time.”

    To those who violate the directives and try to hide from the Police, he advised, they should instead hide themselves from COVID-19, because of the threat it poses to Rwandans and the rest of the world.

    “Rwanda National Police will continue the enforcement through education, inspection and operations to ensure maximum compliance against the spread of the COVID-19, penalising errant violators, but also ensuring the overall security of people living in Rwanda, and their property,” he noted.

    On December 27, the Central African Republic will go to polls to elect a new President and National Assembly.

    Political pressure is mounting both in the opposition camps and the ruling party as both sides wrestle to take control of the government through the ballot.

    Former President François Bozizé who has been rallying people to support him and return to power, had his candidature rejected by the Constitutional Court- his dreams of regaining the presidential chair faded away.

    In a previous press release published Tuesday, François Bozizé announced that he accepted the invalidation of his presidential candidacy.

    Bozizé through his political party the Kwa Na Kwa (KNK) decided to support an opponent and signed an alliance on Wednesday with former Prime Minister Anicet-Georges Dologuélé.

    'The KNK supports the candidacy of Anicet George Dologuele. The two political parties agreed this Wednesday, December 16, 2020 in Bossangoa on an electoral alliance in view of the presidential election of December 27, 2020 ', announced in a statement the party of François Bozizé, the Kwa Na Kwa (KNK).

    According to the Kwa Na Kwa, the former Central African Prime Minister of Ange-Félix Patassé, head of the Union for Central African Renewal (URCA), made the trip to the city of Bossangoa where he met François Bozizé to 'seal their electoral agreement.

    The former head of state asked the opposition to unite behind a single candidate to beat outgoing president Faustin Archange Touadéra.

    On December 15, François Bozizé had refused to support a candidate of the Democratic Opposition Coalition (COD-2020, which he chairs) rather than another.

    He called on the 'presidents of the COD-2020' to designate 'a single consensus candidate', who would have 'the most extensive electoral base and substantial financial means'.

    The campaign aims to highlight the successes, strength and resilience of its users, whilst reinforcing Facebook's ongoing commitment to the region

    NAIROBI, Kenya, December 17, 2020/ — Facebook (http://www.Facebook.com) today released its '2020 Year in Review: Highlights' an infographic showcasing some of its key investments and work across Africa in 2020. Supported by an animated video celebrating and showcasing a few people across the continent rising against the challenges of this unexpected year, the campaign aims to highlight the successes, strength and resilience of its users, whilst reinforcing Facebook's ongoing commitment to the region.

    Commenting, Kojo Boakye, Director of Public Policy, Africa said: 'We know this year has brought many unexpected challenges around the world, including here in Africa. The COVID pandemic has changed the way we work, come together, and impacted many economies and local businesses. Despite this, we continue to see and hear so many stories of resilience, strength and growth. As Facebook, we remain committed to the continent, and our 2020 highlights reinforce just some of these investments and the impact we've been able to have by supporting the growing ecosystems of developers, SMBs, creatives, and many other communities.'

    Some of the key 2020 Year in Review: Highlights include: 

    • 2Africa: Announced 2Africa, alongside eight global and local partners — one of the largest subsea cable projects in the world at 37,000kms it will circle the African continent, connecting 16 countries in Africa, aiming to deliver increased internet capacity and enable greater 4G/5G access
    • Supporting COVID-19 efforts: Partnered with over 40 local health authorities enabling them to run coronavirus education campaigns on Facebook, developed educational pop-ups on Facebook and Instagram, and worked with a number of countries to launch a WhatsApp-based helpline developed to deliver accurate health information
    • Economic Impact Trainings: Trained over 55,200 SMBs across 14 countries through our economic impact programmes, including; Boost with Facebook and SheMeansBusiness, and graduated 229 young people through the Digify Pro programme, with 183 placed in jobs 
    • Developer Circles: Grew our Developer Circles Programme to over 76k people, from 45 cities across 17 countries in Sub-Saharan Africa
    • Digital Literacy Trainings: Undertook digital literacy training, focused on online safety, privacy, news, media literacy and digital citizenship, across six countries training 26,562 people
    • Supporting SMBs: Created a Business Resource Hub (http://bit.ly/34o225c) to support local SMBs and rolled out a $1.8million SMB grant programme for SMBs in Nigeria and South Africa to help cushion some of the effects against COVID-19
    • Facebook Journalism Project (FJP): In collaboration with the International Centre for Journalists (ICFJ), announced $140,000 in grants to South African publishers and a $250,000 video training programme for 10,000 journalists across Africa covering COVID-19
    • Facebook Nigeria Office: Announced plans to open our 2nd office in Africa, in Lagos, Nigeria. Serving the entire SSA region it will be the first office on the continent to house a team of expert engineers building for the future of Africa and beyond
    • Blood Donations: Partnered with local Blood Donation banks and health authorities to roll out the blood donation feature in Kenya, Uganda, South Africa, Rwanda, Senegal, Chad, Namibia, Guinea, Cote d'Ivoire, Burkina Faso, Mali, Zimbabwe and Niger, with over 2.6 million Facebook users signed up to receive blood donation notifications from blood donation centres.
