  • Joe Biden Holds US Highest Civilian Honour Medal #rwanda #RwOT

His campaign was packaged as the battle for the soul of the nation and was rallying his supporters together to make Donald Trump a one term President and defeat Republicans across the country.

Indeed the Joe Biden has quietly kicked out Trump. Under the Democratic Party flag, Joe Biden won the election with 290 Electoral votes above the required 270 (50.6%). Incumbent Donald Trump of the Republican Party fetched only 214 (47.7%).

In a ceremony at the White House, President Barack Obama awarded Joe the Presidential Medal of Freedom with Distinction—the nation's highest civilian honor.

A win for Biden could mark the beginning of a dramatic shift in America's attitude toward the world. He will take office in January 2021. He vows to be friendlier to America's allies than Trump, tougher on autocrats, and better for the planet.

Joe's Story. From Scranton to Wilmington to the White House—with thousands of train rides in between.

    The Bidens

It all started in a little house on North Washington Avenue. Joseph Robinette Biden, Jr. is born in Scranton, Pennsylvania, the son of Catherine Eugenia Finnegan Biden and Joseph Robinette Biden, Sr., and the first of four children.

The Bidens moved to Delaware. When Joe is 10, the Biden family moves to Claymont, Delaware, to look for better work. It becomes the state Joe calls home.

'During my adolescent and college years, men and women were changing the country—Martin Luther King, Jr., John F. Kennedy, Robert Kennedy—and I was swept up in their eloquence, their conviction, the sheer size of their improbable dreams.'

Joe enrolled at the University of Delaware, where he double majors in history and political science. He goes on to Syracuse University, where he earns his law degree.

Joe starts a family. Joe married Neilia Hunter at St. Mary's of the Lake in Skaneateles, New York. In the years to come, they have three children together—Joseph R. 'Beau' Biden, III, Robert Hunter, and Naomi Christina.

The first campaign. Joe practiced law at a firm in Wilmington while also working part-time as a public defender. Later that year, he launches his first-ever campaign for the New Castle County Council, which he won by 2,000 votes.

Joe sticks up for the little guy—and never stops. As a member of the New Castle County Council, Joe fought against a massive 10-lane highway project that threatened to pave over Wilmington's neighborhoods and push back on the oil companies building refineries on the Delaware coast.

'We have too often allowed our differences to prevail among us. We have too often allowed ambitious men to play off those differences for political gain. We have too often retreated behind our differences when no one really tried to lead us beyond them.' — Joe Biden, said while announcing his candidacy for the U.S. Senate, 1972.

Victory turned to tragedy. At age 29, Joe becomes one of the youngest people ever elected to the United States Senate. Weeks later, tragedy strikes the Biden family when Neilia and Naomi are killed and Hunter and Beau are critically injured in an auto accident.

The 120-mile commute. Joe was sworn into the U.S. Senate at his sons' hospital bedsides, and begins commuting from Wilmington to Washington every day, first by car and then by train, in order to tuck his sons in bed at night and see them get up in the morning. He will continue to do so throughout his time in the Senate. For five years, Joe raises Beau and Hunter as a single father, with the help of his sister Valerie and his family.

  • COVID-19: Rwanda- DRC Borders partially opened for students and medics #rwanda #RwOT

The decision was taken Monday during a joint cross border meeting between Rwandan and DR Congo officials aimed at assessing the Covid19 situation along the Bukavu-Goma border posts.

The Governor of the Western Province, Alphonse Munyantwali and his counterpart from North Kivu in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Carly Kasivita, discussed ways to improve the use of the Rubavu border in trade to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

In a meeting held in Goma town, both governors agreed on allowing education and healthcare staff, students, sick persons and permanent employees to cross the two borders.

'We didn’t open the borders but instead agreed on allowing some categories of persons to employees and students to cross over with legal travel documents and stay in the destination country without crossing every day,' said Munyantwali, the Governor of the Western province.

The Rwanda-DR Congo borders with North Kivu are composed of two kinds of border post, the Grande and Petite barrier; the latter being normally the busiest part of the border areas where one can see flocks of small, medium traders crossing with charts full of cargo and others carrying merchandise on fabricated tri-cycle carriers.

The two borders also serve as entry and exit points for persons on business trip, pleasure or education visits crossing into each of the countries either on foot or in transit vehicles.

To limit the spread of Covid-19, all these activities had been shifted to only the Grande barrière, so as to allow both sides to easily monitor movements and ensure preventive measures are under control.

To allow continuation of these business activities, the meeting also discussed possibilities of allowing cross border trade but limited it to only using the Petite barrier posts with strict coronavirus prevention measures in place.

In this category, both governors agreed on allowing cooperatives and trade associations to operate.

The governors also agreed to continue to build a peaceful business environment along the two borders to ease doing business.

  • First Lady Melania Trump: ‘My personal experience with COVID-19 #Rwanda #RwOT

It was two weeks ago when I received the diagnosis that so many Americans across our country and the world had already received—I tested positive for COVID-19. To make matters worse, my husband, and our nation’s Commander-in-Chief, received the same news.

Naturally my mind went immediately to our son. To our great relief he tested negative, but again, as so many parents have thought over the past several months, I couldn’t help but think “what about tomorrow or the next day?” My fear came true when he was tested again and it came up positive. Luckily he is a strong teenager and exhibited no symptoms. In one way I was glad the three of us went through this at the same time so we could take care of one another and spend time together. He has since tested negative.

I was very fortunate as my diagnosis came with minimal symptoms, though they hit me all at once and it seemed to be a roller coaster of symptoms in the days after. I experienced body aches, a cough and headaches, and felt extremely tired most of the time. I chose to go a more natural route in terms of medicine, opting more for vitamins and healthy food. We had wonderful caretakers around us and we will be forever grateful for the medical care and professional discretion we received from Dr. Conley and his team. It was an unfamiliar feeling for me to be the patient instead of a person trying to encourage our nation to stay healthy and safe. It was me being taken care of now, and getting first-hand experience with all that COVID-19 can do. As the patient, and the person benefitting from so much medical support, I found myself even more grateful and in awe of caretakers and first responders everywhere. To the medical staff and the residence staff who have been taking care of our family—thank you doesn’t say enough.

Recovering from an illness gives you a lot of time to reflect. When my husband was taken to Walter Reed as a precaution, I spent much of my time reflecting on my family. I also thought about the hundreds of thousands of people across our country who have been impacted by this illness that infects people with no discrimination. We are in unprecedented times—and with the election fast approaching, it has been easy to get caught up in so much negative energy.

It also cheered me to think of all the people I have met across our country and the world—and the goodness and compassion that exists if you seek it out. Our country has overcome many hardships and much adversity, and it is my hope COVID-19 will be another obstacle we will be able to tell future generations we overcame—and learned from in the process.

I encourage everyone to continue to live the healthiest life they can. A balanced diet, fresh air, and vitamins really are vital to keep our bodies healthy. For your complete well-being, compassion and humility are just as important in keeping our minds strong. For me personally, the most impactful part of my recovery was the opportunity to reflect on many things—family, friendships, my work, and staying true to who you are.

I am happy to report that I have tested negative and hope to resume my duties as soon as I can. Along with this good news, I want people to know that I understand just how fortunate my family is to have received the kind of care that we did. If you are sick, or if you have a loved one who is sick—I am thinking of you and will be thinking of you every day. I pray for our country and I pray for everyone who is grappling with COVID-19 and any other illnesses or challenges.

Thank you to everyone who reached out, and offered well wishes and prayers for our family. You remain in ours as well.

    Sincerely,

    Melania Trump

  • Johnson & Johnson pauses COVID-19 vaccine trial over patient exhibiting an ‘unexplained illness’ #Rwanda #RwOT

Johnson & Johnson pauses COVID-19 vaccine trial over patient exhibiting an ‘unexplained illness’
The company released a statement on Monday, saying “We have temporarily paused further dosing in all our COVID-19 vaccine candidate clinical trials, including the Phase 3 Ensemble trial, due to an unexplained illness in a study participant.” The study aimed to test 60,000 participants across the US, Argentina, Brazil and several other countries. In September, pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca paused clinical trials of an experimental COVID-19 vaccine after a participant in the UK had an unexplained illness, but the study has since resumed in the country.
