  • Rwanda Appoints Former Head of Credit Suisse To Turn Country into Financial Hub #rwanda #RwOT

    A Franco-Ivorian banker Tidjane Thiam is expected to jet in to the Rwandan Capital, Kigali to embark on an aggressive assignment of leading a team of well selected experts that should turn Rwanda into an impeccable global financial hub.

    Tidjane  is taking up his appointment as chairman of the board of Rwanda Finance Limited, the government agency responsible for the development and promotion of the Kigali International Financial Center (KIFC).

    He  is a former head of Credit Suisse. His appointment was announced after a cabinet meeting of Wednesday November 12 chaired by President Paul Kagame.

    The Board of directors for Rwanda Finance Limited include;  Tidjane Thiam   (chairman), Jacob Diko Mukete (Vice Chairperson), Liban Soleman ABDI (member), Louise Kayonga (member), Alice Ntamitondero (member), Umulinga Karangwa (member) and Julien Kavaruganda (member).

    It should be remembered that on February 7th, Mr Tidjane resigned from his duties as CEO of the Swiss banking group, Tidjane was first reported to the board of directors of the French luxury holding company Kering, before talking about him again.

    After his hasty departure from Credit Suisse bank, Tidjane Thiam confirmed his African ambition.

    Cameroonian-born Diko Jacob Mukete

    The expert in governance, economic and financial reforms was also appointed Wednesday November 11 as Vice Chairperson of the board of Rwanda Finance Limited.

    Before this appointment, Mr Mukete served as Country Representative of the African Development Bank in Rwanda. 'Rwanda is a great country with great people. When you look at what they have been able to achieve over the last 17 years from ashes of the Genocide…there are very few countries in the world which have been able to show the kind of resilience…' Mr Mukete said in an interview after his tour on duty at the the AfDB-Rwanda.

    He and the other members will have to bring their experience and insights to the Rwanda Finance Limited which has its work already cut out: turning Rwanda into a financial hub.

  • African Ministers Decry Al-Shabab's Recruitment Drive In Somalia #rwanda #RwOT

    African ministers from countries that are contributing troops to Somalia have expressed concern about the continued recruitment drive by al-Shabab in the Horn of African nation.

    The ministers who met virtually to review the security situation in Somalia in a joint statement issued on Thursday also expressed deep concern over the continued threat posed by al-Shabab and their acquisition of sophisticated weaponry.

    The meeting came amid reports that al-Shabab militants have launched what appears to be a forced recruitment campaign in Somalia's southern region.

    The group, which controls large parts of southern regions, is reportedly pressuring leaders of local villages to make sure teenagers join its ranks.

    The campaign has prompted hundreds of children to flee areas controlled by al-Shabab. 'The meeting commended the Federal Government of Somalia for the efforts undertaken towards inclusive politics and welcomed the agreement on the electoral model for the 2020/21 national elections,' they said in a joint statement issued.

    The meeting re-emphasized the direction of the AU Peace and Security Council and urged the UN Security Council to agree on the modalities for an African Union-United Nations co-leadership in undertaking the independent assessment.

    'Considering the challenges and the strategic issues related to their continued support to Somalia, the meeting agreed to meet again next week,' said the ministers.

    Ministers from Kenya, Djibouti, Burundi, Ethiopia and Uganda attended the virtual meeting. The meeting received a briefing from African Union Mission in Somalia about the prevailing political and security situation in Somalia.

  • UAE ambassador to Rwanda shares with ESSI students about opportunities awaiting them #rwanda #RwOT

    Speaking at the opening of 11 November 2020, when he visited the center of the Islamic Cultural Center home to the ESSI Nyamirambo, where he met with students studying in the fifth and sixth in the different branch, ambassador Alqahtani encouraged the students to work hard as there are many opportunities awaiting them, including being awarded scholarships to study at various universities in the UAE.

    “The UAE government provides scholarships to Rwandan students to study at some of its local universities, such as the UAE University and the Sorbonne University of Abu Dhabi, and this opportunity is given to promising students in secondary schools,” he said.

    He also emphasized that his country has invested heavily in education and made it easier for its people to access affordable education services.

    “The UAE believes that education is the right of every citizen, as evidenced by its founder, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, who said that the most important thing to create wealth is to invest in a knowledgeable people,” he said.

    He said that the UAE government has for years been implementing education programs for all in order to ensure that there are no more uneducated people.

    The United Arab Emirates, he said, is focusing on improving science, technology and innovation in the curriculum, with the aim of becoming world leader in science and innovation.

    The Director General of the Islamic Cultural Center, Abdellatif Oulad Aouid, in his remarks thanked Ambassador Hazza Alqahtani, saying that their center is ready to benefit from the experience of UAE education.

    “The Islamic Cultural Center in Kigali is ready to benefit from the UAE’s experience in education and practical skills, and we hope that your visit here is a sign of a better future,” he said.

    He added that the UAE-Libya-based education center, made education its primary goal at its inception in 1979; now it is one of the most well-established schools.

    Some of the students of ESSI Nyamirambo who participated in the discussion expressed their desire to get more help in their studies so that they could be at a better level and also compete on the international stage.

    Some of those present at the event told IGIHE that the message given to them by the UAE Ambassador left them inspired to grab the opportunities.

    Uwineza Raissa, a sixth-year student in Mathematics, Chemistry and Biology, MCB, said: 'they told us there are many opportunities for Rwandan students to go study in the UAE. I was encouraged to study even harder so as to be among those lucky ones.'

  • Ecobank Donates Rwf5M To Rwanda Diabetes Association #rwanda #RwOT

    The Rwanda Diabetes Association (RDA) on Friday received financial support from Ecobank-Rwanda that will help the association in awareness campaigns, purchasing drugs, helping the sick and their helpers.

    Alice Kilonzo-Zulu the Chief Executive of the bank says they chose to support the association as part of their social responsibility including building houses for the needy, helping poor families and also promoting awareness campaigns against Diabetes.

    Gishoma Francois the head of the Rwanda Diabetes Association welcomed the financial assistance saying, 'it has come at the right time'.

    Meanwhile, at this event, Ecobank has used this opportunity to launch diagnosis for all its staff members.

    Present are representatives from Rwanda Biomedical Centre (RBC).

    Rwanda Diabetes Association runs a clinic in Kigali — 'We provide medical treatment, information on diabetes management and nutrition, counselling and medical supplies.'

    'In our clinic in Kinamba, Kigali, we provide medical treatment, information on diabetes management and nutrition, counselling and medical supplies. We promote innovations in diabetic research, create networks between stakeholders and we host the registry of diabetics in Rwanda,' the association says.

    According to the Diabetes Atlas the prevalence of diabetes in Rwanda is about 3.16% of the population with 1,918 diabetes related deaths per year.

    Understanding Diabetes

    Diabetes mellitus (DM), commonly referred to as diabetes, is caused when either the pancreas is not producing enough insulin or the cells of the body are not responding properly to the insulin produced.

    There are three main types of diabetes:

    • Type 1 results from the pancreas' failure to produce enough insulin, the cause is unknown.
    • Type 2 is a condition in which cells fail to respond to insulin properly or the pancreas doesn't produce enough insulin. The primary causes are excessive body weight and not enough exercise.
    • The third type is gestational diabetes and occurs when pregnant women without a previous history of diabetes develop high blood sugar levels.

    Meanwhile, it is important to be tested for diabetes if you are at risk. If left untreated or improperly managed, diabetes can result in a variety of complications, including heart attack, stroke, kidney failure, blindness, problems with erection (impotence) and amputation.

  • Gatsibo: Dasso Urged To Work Closely With Residents #rwanda #RwOT

    Members of Gatsibo District Administration Security Support Organ (DASSO) are currently gathered for orientation from their National Coordinator ACP Sam Rumanzi.

    ACP Sam Rumanzi has urged all Dasso members in the district to work closely with area residents and ensure that they also provide timely information on challenges within the district so that solutions are found on time.

    During this same gathering, Dasso members in the district revealed that they have so far raised a total of Rwf12million in their savings scheme code named 'Gatsibo Dasso Solidality' founded in 2015.

    According to the district authorities, Dasso in Gatsibo district is composed of 100 members including 88 men and 12 female.

    Dasso in Gatsibo district recently got wide media attention when one of its female members Sylvia Uwihagurukiye picked an abandoned newly born baby and is currently taking care of this innocent baby.

    'Before I picked the baby from the bush near the valley, others were afraid, after I picked him, he was 2 months old, I gave him the name of Ishimwe Ganza Sylvan,' she said.
