  • Nyarugenge youth volunteers reignite security and development activities #rwanda #RwOT

    The congress presided over by Nyarugenge District Executive Administrator (DEA) Emmy Ngabonziza, brought together youth coordinators from cell to district level in Nyarugenge.

    Present was also the national youth volunteers coordinator, Abdallah Murenzi, as well as the Police, the army and the National Youth Council representatives.

    There are about 9,553 members of youth volunteers in Nyarugenge District. Countrywide, the youth group has over 300,000 members.
    While speaking during the congress, the Nyarugenge DEA thanked them for taking the lead in building their country.

    “Everything you do has an impact to the direct beneficiaries and a channel to further build your country. You are setting the tone for other young people to follow,” Ngabonziza said.

    Nyarugenge youth volunteers dedicated the month of October to community security and development activities.

    Thus, their activities focused on raising awareness against lawlessness, community education on healthy feeding, environmental protection, welfare and community development, among others.

    They also built two houses and renovated two others as well as 11 toilets for disadvantaged families; constructed 480 organic gardens to fight poor feeding and educated 741 families on healthy feeding; and planted about 1200 trees.

    Currently, they are also constructing three other houses for less privileged families in Nyarugenge.

    Fighting COVID-19

    During the youth volunteers’ month, they donated about 600 facemasks and conducted awareness campaign on government directives and safety practices for the pandemic containment.

    So far, about 370 youth volunteers in Nyarugenge are stationed at 21 sites in markets, bus terminals, stations and in other public places. They support Rwanda National Police in monitoring the implementation of practices meant to prevent further spread of COVID-19 such as physical distancing, hand washing and wearing face masks, among others.

    The national youth volunteers coordinator, Abdallah Murenzi, said that countrywide, the youth volunteers activities in the month of October are worth over Frw500 million with over Frw12 in Nyarugenge District alone.

    “You cannot equate the value of volunteerism. The value of what you do is found in how it contributes to our country’s progress on security and development fronts,” Murenzi said.

    He urged them to be defined by the values of discipline, patriotism, fighting corruption and influencing positive behavioral change.

    “Changing the criminal behaviors of drug dealers and abusers, subscribing to health insurance, healthy feeding and healthy living… all spearhead peer teaching and learning. This is what you should strive to do as youth volunteers.

    You would not be pleased if wrangles in your communities become fatal or if young people there become drug addicts,” said Murenzi.

    The District Political and Civil Education Officer (DPCEO) for Nyarugenge, Inspector of Police (IP) Shadrack Munyakazi lauded the role of youth volunteers in crime prevention activities.

    “Your activities have set roots in fighting and preventing crimes through awareness and information sharing on wrongdoers,” IP Munyakazi said.

    He added: “Your spirit of volunteerism defines a disciplined and patriotic young people. This is a culture that should be inherited by generations to create a solid branch of our country’s sustainable security and development.”

    He urged them to give much emphasis to fighting drugs, GBV, child abuse and corruption, among others.

  • Japan's Royal Princess Suspends Plans To Marry Commoner #rwanda #RwOT

    In Japan when a royal member chooses to marry a commoner, they are immediately stripped off their royal status and become commoners too.

    The current Princess of Japan Princess Mako is only 28- she studied in Edinburgh, Dublin and Leicester where she met her boyfriend Kei Komuro  a commoner in Japan.

    According to sources, the pair announced their engagement in 2017 but this would mean that if they went ahead and officially married, Princess Mako would lose her royal status. She then suspended the marriage plans.

    But after already delaying her wedding once in 2017, it has been announced that the plans for her to wed Komuro are on hold yet again, despite it being over two years since they originally postponed their big day.

    The Japanese royal told how, while the couple is 'irreplaceable to each other', there are still no 'concrete plans' of when they will eventually tie the knot, and that it's difficult to tell 'anything about the future' at the moment.

    'For us, a marriage is a necessary choice to live and honour our hearts,' said Mako in a statement on Friday, released by the Imperial Household Agency. 'We are irreplaceable to each other, and we can lean on each other in happy times and in unhappy times.

    'It is difficult to tell anything concrete regarding our future plans and others at the moment.' Japan's imperial law requires a princess to leave the royal family after marrying a commoner.

    Princess Mako's aunt, Princess Sayako, became the last royal to be stripped of her status when she wed a Tokyo city official in 2005.

    The couple met while both students at Tokyo's International Christian University. Komuro proposed over dinner in December 2013, and the pair kept their their long-distance relationship under wraps while Mako studied for her master's degree in the UK.

    Princess Mako announced her intention to marry Mr Komuro, who works at a law firm, in 2017. Shortly afterwards it was announced the pair would wed in November 2018.

    The wedding was later postponed until 2020, with an official statement saying the couple needed more time to plan.

    However reports have since emerged suggesting Mr Komuro's family is involved in a financial dispute of which his in-laws disapprove.

    Ghana, the host country of the African Development Bank Group's 2021 Annual Meetings (AfDB.org), signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the institution on Friday, marking an important milestone in preparations for the event.

    The 56th Annual Meetings of the African Development Bank and the 47th Annual Meeting of the African Development Fund are scheduled to take place from 24 to 28 May 2021, in Ghana's capital city, Accra.

    Ghanaian Finance Minister Kenneth Ofori-Atta, the current chair of the Bank's Boards of Governors, signed the MOU on the country's preparedness to host the event at a ceremony held at the Ministry of Finance office in Accra. Prof. Vincent O. Nmehielle, African Development Bank Group Secretary General, signed on behalf of the Bank Group.

    The meeting began with a minute of silence in honour of former Ghanaian president Jerry John Rawlings, who died on Thursday 12 November, with both signatories paying their respects.

    In remarks following the signing, Minister Ofori-Atta said he had carefully reviewed the MOU and found it satisfactory. 'The signing is yet another indication of our strong commitment to delivering on all the requirements for hosting of the 2021 AGM. As a country, our interest in this event has not diminished. At the highest level, the commitment is visible,' he said.

    'We promise to champion African excellence and deliver a befitting event. We will leave no stone unturned to ensure that this is a seminal event.'

    The ceremony was witnessed by Finance Ministry officials, a representative of the Bank of Ghana, African Development Bank Acting Country Manager Sebastian Okeke and representatives from the Bank's headquarters in Abidjan.

    Thanking Minister Ofori-Atta for his leadership in the preparations, Prof.  Nmehielle said Ghana had been selected to host the meetings in 2016 during the Annual Meetings in Lusaka, Zambia, following the country's expression of interest.

    The Secretary General said due to the unpredictable evolution of the COVID-19 pandemic, the MOU provided three scenarios for the conduct of the meetings: a full-fledged meeting as per the Bank's normal practice, limited Annual Meetings, focusing only on statutory matters, and virtual Annual Meetings.

    'I am delighted that we are here today to sign the MOU. I would like to assure you of the Bank's full commitment and availability to accompany the Government of Ghana on this journey,' Prof. Nmehielle said.

    While the situation on the ground would determine which scenario would be adopted as they got closer to the event, 'it is heartwarming to learn that Ghana is working on preparations for the full-fledged Annual Meetings,' Prof. Nmehielle said.

    The Bank Group's Annual Meetings are the most important annual statutory event, at which the Boards of Governors of the Bank and the African Development Fund meet and review Bank Group activities over the previous year.  

    The 2020 Annual Meetings were held virtually for the first time in the Bank's history, due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The highlight of the scaled-back meetings was the election of Bank President Akinwumi Adesina, for a new five-year term.

    The meetings usually draw some 3,500 participants, including finance ministers, governors of central banks, policy makers, civil society groups, heads of international organisations and business leaders from the Bank Group's member states.

    Ghana has been a member of the Bank Group since its inception in 1963.

    Leaders from Moroccan and U.S. armies met today to discuss plans for conducting next year's African Lion, the largest military training exercise on the continent, amidst the uncertainty created by the COVID-19 pandemic.

    Maj. Gen. Andrew Rohling, the U.S. Army Southern European Task Force commanding general and U.S. Army Europe-Africa deputy commanding general, met with Moroccan Gen. Belkhir El Farouk, the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces Southern Zone commander. Both agreed that the African Lion exercise, scheduled for June, represents a chance to show the continued strong strategic partnership between the United States and Morocco, even as both countries face the COVID-19.

    'It was a pleasure meeting General Farouk in person for the first time,' Rohling said. 'Judging by the caliber of his character and understanding of the strategic environment, I can only imagine how great an experience it will be for U.S. service members to train alongside Moroccan military professionals in African Lion 21.'

    Farouk welcomed Rohling and took him on a visit to the main facilities of the Southern Zone Headquarters. The Moroccan host expressed his willingness to work closely with Rohling to ensure the successful completion of exercise African Lion 21.

    Plans for African Lion 21 build on African Lion 20, which was curtailed last spring during the new coronavirus outbreak.

    'We clearly understand the importance of protecting our forces: U.S., Moroccan, and others anticipated to participate, from the pandemic,' Rohling said. 'Our staffs are carefully and deliberately planning African Lion 21 with this in mind.'

    Farouk and Rohling also discussed regional defense and security topics, force readiness issues and COVID-19 challenges.

    'We have a number of shared mutual challenges,' Rohling said. 'I'm confident that we will continue to build upon our already very strong relationship to meet these challenges.'
