  • IUCN, Partners launch Regional resource Hub for protected areas and biodiversity #rwanda #RwOT

The Regional Resource Hub for protected areas and biodiversity is now available to support the 24 countries in Eastern and Southern Africa in improving conservation outcomes and achieving global commitments, for the benefit of nature and people.

During an online event, the International Union for Conservation of Nature-IUCN, the Regional Centre for Mapping of Resources for Development-RCMRD, and partners on Tuesday officially launched the Regional Resource Hub and one of its flagship knowledge products, the most comprehensive analysis on the state of protected areas in Eastern and Southern Africa.

The Regional Resource Hub is a knowledge hub that compiles and analyses relevant data and provides information to support field interventions and policy dialogues, for fair and effective management and governance of protected and conserved areas in Eastern and Southern Africa.

The hub acts as one of the regional observatories implemented by the Biodiversity and Protected Areas Management (BIOPAMA) Programme and is hosted by the Regional Centre for Mapping of Resources for Development (RCMRD).

It includes an information system, co-developed with the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission, which helps decision-makers to track progress on conservation targets and to manage and assess the protected and conserved areas in the region.

Other similar hubs have been established with BIOPAMA's support in Western and Central Africa, the Caribbean, and the Pacific. 'Effective conservation, management, and governance of protected and conserved areas in Eastern and Southern Africa is crucial to long-term economic growth and development.'

'The establishment of this Resource Hub is a great milestone as it will facilitate the provision of relevant information and data to support policies and effective decision-making on protected and conserved areas which are our invaluable natural heritage,' said Luther Bois Anukur, Regional Director, IUCN Eastern, and Southern Africa Regional Office.

The Regional Resource Hub was launched in the presence of Heads of Protected Area agencies, ministries responsible for protected areas and wildlife, high-level technical institutions, Regional Economic Communities, and BIOPAMA donors and partners.

'RCMRD is confident that the data and information availed in the Regional Resource Hub will go a long way in delivering useful information to make informed decisions, as the various stakeholders in conservation address the challenges that threaten our biodiversity,' said Dr. Emmanuel Nkurunziza, Director General, Regional Centre for Mapping of Resources for Development.

The knowledge generated here aims to support national governments, regional organizations, NGOs, communities, and other organizations, in achieving their biodiversity conservation objectives and to report their progress on multilateral environmental agreements, such as the Convention on Biological Diversity, more accurately.

  • Tigrayan militia Massacres 600 In Ethiopia #rwanda #RwOT

The Ethiopian Human Rights Commission has estimated that 600 people have been massacred in the western town of Mai-Kadra. These crimes were allegedly committed by a Tigrayan militia.

According to the latest investigation by the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission, at least 600 Amhara individuals were massacred in Mai-Kadra by a Tigray militia.

Amnesty International had already raised fears of this village located along the Sudanese border, victim of violence between civilians on November 9.

Crimes were planned and then committed in cold blood by the Samri, a brigade of young Tigrayan militiamen, after interviews with survivors.

The account of events is unequivocal, the towns people would have had no chance of escaping their tormentors. The massacre is taking place in these lands in the west of the province, the scene of territorial claims between Amharas and Tigrayans for decades.

However, the current situation calls for caution because contradictory testimonies are pouring in from neighboring Sudan, where more than 40,000 Ethiopians have taken refuge.

It is still impossible to fully shed light on these crimes today. And these questions remain as long as the Tigray remains in the dark, cut off from all contact with the outside as it has been for twenty-two days.

The African football fraternity lost a hardworking personality Augustin Sidy Diallo, the president of the Ivorian Football Federation. He contracted Covid-19 and died on Saturday.

The virus prevented Diallo from accompanying the Ivory Coast's national team in this month's African Cup of Nations qualifying double header against Madagascar.

It was announced earlier in 2020 that Diallo would leave his post as president of the Ivorian Football Federation after serving two mandates. Under Diallo's presidency, the Ivory Coast won the 2015 African Cup of Nations.

Several celebrities from the African and world football world paid him vibrant tributes. The international Samuel Eto'o was not left out of the tributes.

Through a post on social networks, the former FC Barcelona striker recognized in the illustrious disappeared, an enduring man who marked Ivorian and African football.

    Augustin Sidy Diallo

    'You marked football'

'In our last interview, I used all my verb to try to convince you to stay in what you called 'your complicated world': the world of football. You were certainly right, president. However, I have always believed that beyond sports politics, it is a duty to try to change things. You tried, even against the greatest, and you succeeded. You have marked Ivorian and African football with your determination and your desire to seek excellence for this beautiful country. Despite all the obstacles, and often without subsidies, you knew how to achieve your goals, namely, to fight for what is right for the football of your country. 'Posted Eto'o.

    Go and rest in peace!

'I'm so proud of you president. You have been an example, and I hope that your fellow presidents of African federations will follow you, because you have shown to the world that all federations are equal! As you leave us, Africa needs more than ever that courage, that vision, that determination and that leadership that has characterized you so well. (…). It was my great honor to know you and to be around you President. Go and rest in peace! Wrote the former captain of the Indomitable Lions.

  • Burundi Returnees Gripped By Hunger, Disease, Misery #rwanda #RwOT

Burundi refugees returning in their country end up in a life that is so complicated and have to endure various sufferings including hunger, lack of clothing, shelter, disease and misery.

The plight of these returnees was revealed during a brainstorming workshop of various government and non-government partners and stakeholders on effective and sustainable reintegration mechanisms for returnees, late last week.

Nestor Bimenyimana, director general of repatriation, reintegration and reintegration at the Interior Ministry said, 'Ultimately, a returnee ends up feeling like a foreigner at home, in his country.'

Bimenyimana seeks the establishment of an intervention coordination mechanism to be able to channel all the initiatives in accordance with a mapping of the logical framework of a well-defined action plan.

'Everyone is going to be aligned with the same goal. An intervention framed according to the region and the need. All initiatives will be coordinated by the ministry and at the end of the year it will do an evaluation,' he said.

For him, this mechanism will allow the various partners and stakeholders to succeed in the socio-professional reintegration of returnees.

He notes that the installed environment will generate positive effects even in countries of asylum.

The returnees, if they well accorded their rights, then become a point of reference for the rest of the refugees still in exile. Other refugees will be encouraged to return to their homeland.

According to the UNHCR representative in Burundi, welcoming returnees in this context of the Covid-19 pandemic requires a lot of effort in terms of technical and financial resources.

It reassures, however, that all the necessary measures have been taken to facilitate their repatriation in accordance with the tripartite agreements which have been concluded.

Over the past three years, 106,558 returnees have already been received and settled in all provinces of the country. 10 provinces concentrate more returnees due to their proximity to the neighboring countries of Burundi.
