  • Tour De France Stage 5 Kicks Off Noon From Gap to Privas 183km #rwanda #RwOT

On Wednesday morning, riders will kick off at 12:20 (BST) pedalling from Gap for the next 183km until they cross a finish-line at Privas later in the evening. The weather is so far good and the mood is high with enthusiastic fans though terrified by Covid-19.

This part of France is partly cloudy today with general temperature of 17 degrees centigrade. Sunrise was seen at 7:06AM and is scheduled to set at 8:16PM. The humidity is almost 64% and riders will have to endure against a wind speed of 14km/h from South East. Visibility is about 10Km and atmospheric pressure of 1016mb.

In assessing this route, it is a gentle descent with only a couple of Category 4 climbs to break the rhythm of the sprinters.

However, the last of those climbs is 15km out from the finish and possibly presents the opportunity for a swashbuckling late breakaway attack, but few riders would be able to repel the peloton that would come barrelling at them thereafter, so it’s a day to stick to the obvious sprint contenders.

This part of France from Gap to Privas is renowned for the Mistral that blows north-to-south, and there’s a chance that things could be smashed asunder if it makes an appearance as the peloton turns west into the finish.

  • The Brand Behind The Product #rwanda #RwOT

I shouldn’t even ask whether you’ve gone shopping before because I bet you have and could probably be doing it now. It’s one of those exciting activities we do from time to time.

Did you realize that for some products, you are particular about which brand they belong to and for others, you just pick any off the shelf? If I went shopping for a communication device, I already know which brand I’ll be looking for long before I get there. The same goes for liquor, bath soap, or toothpaste. I believe you too, have your bespoke list.

However, when it comes to sugar, salt, toilet paper, matchboxes, wax candles, or rice, I’ll pretty much pick it from any brand off the shelf. Does this mean that sugar or toilet paper brands aren’t working hard enough to differentiate between themselves or am I drawn to a particular brand because of promo price discount, the familiarity of use, top of mind awareness from frequent ads, and word of mouth/ social endorsement of a particular product’s quality?

This cocktail of reasons and more is what separates brands that boast of high consumption and haul in revenues versus those that get lucky to be chosen in the picky-picky-ponky game. The latter here is selected based on price. Vusi Thembekwayo puts it so well. He says that a discussion around price has no value. Whatever you are dealing with has been commoditized.

If your brand’s “why” is inherent in your product communication, consumers will be attracted to it. The “why”, is the reason you do what you do. And always remember, a brand is your audience’s perception of you. This perception can be informed by the quality of your advertising, social media presence, website, and your promise to your customers.

So, what do your customers care about the most, is it your product or brand?

  • World Bank Under Pressure For ‘Fake’ Doing Business Data #rwanda #RwOT

2021 will be a bad year without scorecards on business performance for about 190 countries across the globe usually assessed by the World Bank annually.

The World Bank said last week on August 27, that it had discovered massive fraud and irregularities in its data handling. “We are conducting a systematic review and assessment of data changes that occurred subsequent to the institutional data review process for the last five Doing Business reports,” the institution said in a statement. World Bank said that a number of irregularities have been reported regarding changes to the data in the Doing Business 2018 and Doing Business 2020 reports, published in October 2017 and 2019. “Publication of the Doing Business report will be paused as we conduct our assessment,” World Bank said.

About two years ago, the World Bank’s Chief Economist warned that the report, called “Doing Business,” was vulnerable to manipulation. It has since been discovered that data on four countries—China, Azerbaijan, the United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia—appeared to have been inappropriately altered, according to a person with knowledge of the decision. In the report published in 2019, for example, indicated that Rwanda’s performance had dropped by nine places to the 38th position in the Ease of Doing Business with a score of 76.5 from 77.88. Rwanda was not happy with this drop in rankings because of the Institution introduced measures without informing countries.

“While we acknowledge this year’s Doing Business Report, we note with great disappointment the abrupt change in methodology which has affected Rwanda’s global rankings negatively. We will continue to engage the World Bank on this issue,” Clare Akamanzi, CEO of the Rwanda Development Board said commenting on this year’s report. In the report, only two Sub-Saharan economies, Mauritius and Rwanda, ranked among the top 50.

It is intriguing that only 10 countries had shown the most improvement and collectively accounted for “one-fifth of all the reforms recorded worldwide. The report, for example, showed vast improvement among Middle Eastern economies with Saudi Arabia climbing 30 places. World Bank says it intends to conduct a thorough audit of its data. If confirmed, the revised data could affect the rankings of the five countries. “We will act based on the findings and will retrospectively correct the data of countries that were most affected by the irregularities,” World Bank said, adding, it had informed affected countries.

Meanwhile, in February 2018, Researchers at the Center for Global Development wrote, “Changes over time in the Doing Business rankings are not particularly meaningful. They largely reflect changes in methodology and sample which the World Bank makes every year, without correcting earlier numbers—not changes in reality on the ground.”
