  • Police Finally Captures Kigali's Notorious Multiple Identity Land Fraudster #rwanda #RwOT

    Owning a house in Rwanda's capital Kigali has become one of the biggest dreams for nearly all walks of life- and it causing rapid rise in prices of prime plots of land both within Kigali and surrounding suburbs.

    Many people are on a daily basis making inquiries about plots of land to buy and sell prompting the intervention of middle-men (commissionaires) that get paid on commission for fixing deals between buyers and sellers.

    However, in the process of buying and selling, many people have fallen victim to fraudsters that carefully take advantage of ignorance of this complex property business. The fraudsters are so cunning and highly connected to bankers, land Centre and sometimes within law enforcement agencies.

    Despite Rwanda Investigations Bureau currently investigating an enormous pile of cases related to property and financial fraud, many such crimes are taking on a new dimension both in speed and high level treachery.

    For example, Munyeragwe Jean Damascene (considering names on his driver's license) has been in and out of prison because of fraud related to treacherous buying and selling of plots of land around Kigali.

    Munyeragwe in his 40s, was serving a 3-year prison sentence when his name appeared on a list of among over 2,000 inmates convicted for various crimes that were accorded Presidential pardon in September 2018.

    Immediately out of prison gates, Munyeragwe resumed his trade because his network still existed and was still going on with property fraud business. It is not well known how they obtain genuine land titles which they use to sell to unsuspecting clients- this remains a very big challenge for the law enforcement agencies.

    Munyeragwe's luck run out recently early on September 24, when he sold a plot of land to a young woman Kayitesi Anitha.

    'He identified himself as a pastor and was accompanied by a decently dressed woman and drove a nice SUV as we headed to the site of the plot,' Kayitesi told Taarifa, adding that she didn't suspect any foul play.

    The plot with (UPI:1/02/01/01/1776) measuring 659 square meters is located at Rubungo village, Kinyaga cell of Bumbogo sector in Gasabo district but is registered in the names of Uwizeyimana Leo and his spouse (names withheld).

    'I liked the plot and immediately paid Rwf2million to Munyeragwe,' Kayitesi said, 'it was the second plot I was buying but later discovered I had been fleeced.'

    Munyeragwe is said to always hire expensive cars and changes registration number plates whenever he goes to meet unsuspecting clients.

    Recently on November 2, Munyeragwe was arrested after fleecing another person to whom he sold a plot of land valued over Rwf20million. He is currently detained at Kimironko detention facility as he awaits trial. It is believed that Munyeragwe has conned many people that usually fail to reach him after they notice a deal gone bad.

  • Kenya: Mombasa County Legislator Mohammed Hatimy Dies Of Covid-19 #rwanda #RwOT

    A seasoned Kenyan Politician has succumbed to the deadly Covid-19, local private radio Capital Fm in Nairobi reported early on Saturday.

    According to the announcement Mohammed Hatimy was an outspoken County Assembly member in Mombasa.

    'He passed on at 3am. He was suffering from lung infection,' Mombasa County Assembly Speaker Ibrahim Khatri said. He had been admitted to Mombasa Hospital's Intensive Care Unit.

    Hatimy, who was also the Chairman of county's Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), died on Saturday morning.

    He is survived with wife Dr. Khadija Shikelly, the Mombasa County Medical Services Chief Officer.

    Hatimy was among seven Mombasa County Assembly members who tested positive leading to the temporary closure of the assembly on October 27.

    He chaired the Finance Committee in Mombasa County Assembly.

    His family said they were planning to bury him at the Kokowani Cemetery later Saturday.

  • Women and Girls 2020 Virtual Summit Brings Together Participants Across Africa #rwanda #RwOT

    The Women and Girls Africa Summit (WAGS) is back to discuss women's rights in Africa — this time for a virtual conference bringing together participants across the continent.

    WAGS is a free event that amplifies the voices of African women and girls and centers them in finding the solutions to challenges they face. More than 3,500 people have already registered for the summit, which will include 150 speakers and 25 sessions on health, the economy, education, safety and security, and the environment.

    With the theme 'Realizing the Power of Africa's Future' the summit will bring the voices of African women and girls to the fore and develop programs and institutions that prepare and position them for leadership and as agents of their own self-determination. 

    'Women's rights are human rights. The time has come for women and girls in Africa to lock arms with women and girls around the world to tackle the issues they face,' said Akudo Anyanwu, Founder, Friends Africa.

    'Africa's socio-economic transformation will only be realized once we aggressively address gender-specific challenges, prioritize gender equality and women's participation, and firmly entrench women in leadership positions at all levels in society,' articulated Her Excellency Graça Machel.

    The summit could not come at a more critical time, given the growing challenges women and girls face amid the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition to risks to their health, African women and girls are also dealing with a drop in household income and growing domestic violence. The summit will address these challenges that are exacerbated by COVID-19.

    'Solutions need to be designed based on women's experiences. A maternal death is not one single moment, it's about a woman's access to quality care and information before she even gets pregnant. It's about strengthening the entire health system around her and understanding the realities she is facing in her community,' stated Mary-Ann Etiebet, Lead and Executive Director, MSD for Mothers.

    The summit sessions will also amplify the objectives of the African Charter on Human and People's Rights, the Maputo Protocol on the Rights of Women in Africa, African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child, the UN Sustainable Development Goals, Beijing +25, and UN Security Council Resolution 1325-all important policies and roadmaps towards the achievement of gender equality, development and peace for women and girls globally.

  • Ethnic Cleansing Reportedly Targeting Ethiopia's Amharas #rwanda #RwOT

    Thousands of Ethiopians have flooded into neighbouring Sudan fleeing from gross ethnic cleansing ongoing in a fighting between Ethiopian government forces and rebellious northern leaders. The United Nations says more than 14,000 'exhausted and scared' refugees have fled the Tigray region to Sudan.

    Reports indicate that Ethnic Amharas are being ruthlessly killed while Ethnic Tigrayans arrested, in hiding or cut off from the world.

    Amnesty International confirmed the killings via images and witnesses, and the United Nations warned of possible war crimes. Most of the dead were ethnic Amharas, according to a man who helped clear the bodies away and looked at identity cards.

    The United Nations fears that the 10-day conflict in Tigray region has killed hundreds, sent refugees flooding into Sudan, and raised fears it may suck in Eritrea or force Ethiopia to divert troops from an African force opposing al Qaeda-linked militants in Somalia.

    Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed blames the massacre on forces loyal to the Tigray region's government, which his administration regards as illegal after a months-long falling-out. The federal government seeks to arrest and replace its leaders.

    Prime Minister Abiy accuses the regional government of 'unceasing hate and fear propaganda.' On Friday, speaking in the Tigrinya language, he urged its forces to surrender 'in the next two to three days.'

    He also accuses the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF), which rules the mountainous region of more than five million people, of treason and terrorism.

    The U.N. office on genocide prevention condemned reports of 'targeted attacks against civilians based on their ethnicity or religion' in Ethiopia, including hate speech and incitement to violence. It warned that ethnic violence 'has reached an alarming level over the past two years,' and the new rhetoric sets a 'dangerous trajectory that heightens the risk of genocide, war crimes, ethnic cleansing and crimes against humanity.'
