  • Act now to invest in nature or face biodiversity collapse and further pandemics, 'Wildlife Conservation 20' warns G20 #rwanda #RwOT

    • Investing in nature costs a fraction of pandemic response while driving green jobs and tackling climate change.

    A new initiative involving 20 of the world's leading conservation organisations today issued an unprecedented joint declaration to the G20 calling for urgent action to invest in nature to protect biodiversity and reduce the risk of future pandemics.

    World leaders gathering in Riyadh this weekend have an unparalleled opportunity to build into COVID-19 economic recovery long-lasting action to conserve planetary health and reset human interactions with nature. 

    While the exact source of the virus remains uncertain, scientists agree that just like HIV, Ebola, SARS, Bird Flu, and MERS, COVID-19 is zoonotic: it jumped from animals to people, likely as a result of our increasing interaction with wildlife. 

    The pandemic, which has killed 1.3 million people to date and affected hundreds of millions more, stands as one of the starkest and most urgent warnings yet that our current relationship with nature is unsustainable. 

    Investment in nature — including ending deforestation, controlling the wildlife trade, and enhancing livelihoods of people living in or depending on natural landscapes — is not a luxury to consider alongside pandemic recovery, the WC20 said. 

    Protecting biodiversity is perhaps the most important component of government recovery plans that will significantly reduce the risk of future pandemics and avoid similar or greater human, economic, and environmental harm. 

    The cost of these investments is a fraction of the estimated $26 trillion in economic damage COVID-19 has already caused. By one recent estimate, $700 billion a year would reverse the decline in biodiversity by 2030. That's about one-fortieth the cost of the economic fallout from the current pandemic. 

    Much of this does not need to be new money. A significant proportion of this investment could come from redirecting existing harmful financing, for example in subsidies that encourage deforestation and environmental destruction. 

    Investing in planetary health including directing climate finance towards nature-based solutions drives green growth and green jobs, and takes us a long way towards tackling the effects of climate change and meeting the goals of the Paris Agreement on climate. 

    With lives and livelihoods adversely affected by COVID-19 across the globe, there is public consensus and support as never before for governments to act now to protect and re-establish a healthier relationship with nature.

    This is the watershed moment that prompted the formation of the Wildlife Conservation 20, or WC20, uniting 20 of the most prominent conservation NGOs at the forefront of protecting wildlife and ecosystems. 

    The WC20 represents the voice of this conservation community, which has come together to articulate the steps needed to seize this unprecedented opportunity. 

    In a joint statement, the WC20 said: 'COVID-19 has been a wake up call to everyone on this planet. Now is the time to value and invest in nature by developing sustainable nature-based economic stimulus packages that embrace a One Health approach and address long-term planetary health, food security, poverty alleviation, climate change, and biodiversity loss and work towards achieving the UN's Sustainable Development Goals.

    'That is why the WC20 calls on the G20 nations to implement greater investment in addressing this critical present imbalance with nature. Otherwise, the natural world, on which we all rely, will not be safeguarded for the long-term well-being and security of current and future human generations, and for all life on earth.' 

    Ahead of the G20 Leaders' Summit on 21 and 22 November in Riyadh, Space for Giants and ESI Media on 19 November hosted a high-level virtual summit of CEOs and senior executives from the WC20 to agree a joint declaration identifying priority actions for world leaders. 

    'Covid-19 is a terrible, terrible reminder of what can happen if we don't respect nature, and there are many other signs, in loss of species, in deforestation, in pollution,' said Dr Max Graham, CEO of Space for Giants. 

    'This really is a watershed moment when public opinion is massively supportive of the G20 governments taking the measures needed to protect wildlife and the natural world. They can also act and know that it's cheaper to invest in nature to reduce the risk of pandemics, than to deal with the awful economic fallout they cause.' 

    The full text of the Declaration is available at spaceforgiants.org/WC20. In summary, the WC20's recommendations are:

    • Policy and Implementation: Strengthen, sufficiently resource, and implement existing international and domestic legislation, and enact new legislation, to ensure the legal, sustainable, and traceable use of natural resources including wildlife, that no longer threatens human or animal health.
    • Law Enforcement: Scale up financial and technical support for law enforcement in key wildlife source states, transit hubs and destination countries/territories. Adopt a collaborative, multi-disciplinary approach to help create an effective deterrent to wildlife crime.
    • Safeguard Natural Ecosystems: Secure government support, adequate finances, and technical expertise to effectively protect and manage natural ecosystems and wildlife so that they are valued and safeguarded, and become generators of economic wealth, and commit to scale this up to 30% of land and sea over the coming decade.
    • Support Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities: Recognise and respect the rights of IPLCs living within and/or depending on natural ecosystems, to improve human well-being, alleviate the pressures of human-wildlife coexistence, and reduce, halt, and reverse the loss of natural habitats and the associated wildlife they hold. 
    • Reduce Demand: Work with government authorities, stakeholders, civil society, and major influencers to inform the public about the dangers of zoonotic spillovers and how to lower their risks. Raise public awareness about, and reduce demand for, illegally and/or unsustainably exploited wildlife and their products.

  • Athletics Forum Seeks To Build True Rwandan Champion #rwanda #RwOT

    The Athletics Commissions Forum is concluding its discussions on Saturday since kicking off on November 19, in the capital Kigali at Kigali Olympic hotel.

    According to organisers, this forum has attracted 105 participants from 25 National Sports Federations, 4 Olympic scholarship holders, 4 athletes benefiting team support grant program, 6 athletes benefiting ANOCA special grant, 16 Olympians and 25 from the National Sports Federations.

    During this gathering, participants deliberated on Protection of Clean Athletes and Covid-19 prevention measures. They also scanned through Gender in Sports and Inclusion on Day-two of the forum.

    For the past three days, participants at the forum have been engaged in discussions guided by Safeguards, Anti-Doping: 2020 update and Mental health and finally Competition manipulation.

    On Saturday, forum was treated to a discussion under a topic 'Building a True Champion'. Valens Munyabagisha the President of Rwanda National Olympic and Sports Committee (RNOSC) submited on how his committee can contribute to building a true champion.

    'One of the key responsibilities of RNOSC is to contribute to capacity building of Sport and Games Federations and Associations. Several technical courses for coaches in Athletics, Rugby, Basketball, Triathlon, Handball and Karate have been organized,' he said.

    Meanwhile on the sidelines of this forum, , the Rwanda National Olympic and Sports Committee in partnership with the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Rwanda also launched a 10-day awareness campaign to fight COVID-19 pandemic.

    The forum was proposed following the approval of the RNOSC Athletes Commission by the RNOSC General Assembly held on the 11th of November 2020.

  • Twitter Plans To Handover Presidential @POTUS Account To Joe Biden #rwanda #RwOT

    Twitter will hand control of the presidential @POTUS account to Joe Biden when he is sworn in on inauguration day, even if President Donald Trump has not conceded his election loss, US media reported Friday.

    The social media giant is 'actively preparing to support the transition of White House institutional Twitter accounts on January 20th, 2021,' Twitter spokesperson Nick Pacilio said.

    The process is being done in consultation with the National Archives, as it was in 2017, he said. The handover will see all existing tweets on @POTUS, as well as @FLOTUS, @VP and other official accounts, archived.

    The accounts will then be reset to zero tweets and transferred to the incoming Biden White House that day.

    Trump, who still has not conceded his November 3 loss, used Twitter to help build his political brand and, later, wield the power of the presidency — though he mainly uses his personal account, @realDonaldTrump, whose 88 million followers dwarf @POTUS's 32 million.

    The @POTUS account is largely used to retweet Trump's personal account as well as the White House and other accounts. Trump's frequent habit of abruptly announcing new policies on the platform has led to long-standing complaints of governing by tweet.

    Twitter has long come under pressure to curb the president's use of the site to spread misinformation and conspiracy theories.

    Since the election the company has slapped warning labels on many Trump tweets as he continues to insist, despite evidence to the contrary, that he won the vote, and that Biden's victory is down to massive fraud.

    Biden, for his part, is a far more sedate Twitter user. He has sent less than 7,000 tweets to his 19 million followers, compared to Trump's 58,000.

  • Nyarutarama Slum Residents Maintain Protest Against Unfair Expropriation #rwanda #RwOT

    Hundreds of Bannyahe slum residents in a small corner of one of Kigali's elite suburbs were by Friday still camped on site as a means to register their complaints of unfair expropriation.

    In 2017, about 800 residents were asked to evacuate from the slum for a real estate investor to construct facilities of public and community interest as required by land lease agreements between government and land holders.

    The victims of this expropriation wished to be compensated by cash and not relocated to conjoined housing at an estate in Busanza, Nyarugunga sector,  Kicukiro district — Kigali. The new Busanza housing project comprises of over 1,000 units.

    Yotamu Ntivuguruzwa says, 'It may be hard to start a new life. My wife visited the place and we agreed to shift even if the new house is small.'

    However, the city of Kigali has appeared in different court sessions as it defends itself in dozens of cases appealing against unfair expropriation.

  • Pope Says History Has Separated Peoples But Not Destroyed Roots Uniting Them #rwanda #RwOT

    Pope Francis receives members of the Pontifical Latin American College in Rome, and reminds them of the richness that their culture has to offer to Christian communities around the world.

    'Although history has separated our peoples, it has not destroyed the root that unites them in that great work of the evangelization of America.'

    Pope Francis opened his remarks to the community of the Pontifical Latin American College with these words. He explained that it is on this premise that the College was born: 'A commitment that would unite all our particular Churches and at the same time open them to the Universal Church in this city of Rome.'

    Pope Francis went on to note that the seminarians' experience of communion and openness is a great challenge and can 'help heal the world'.

    'The Gospel and its message came to our land by human means…and its Word spread to all corners of the continent', he said, explaining that this 'miracle' took place because 'both those who arrived and those who received them were able to open their hearts' to what the other could bring.

    The Pope then said the Latin American presence has brought huge benefits to Christian communities around the globe: from Northern and Central Europe all the way to the East. He said these communities have found 'a new vitality and a renewed drive' from the influence of Latin America.

    He used the example of the celebration of the Christ of Miracles, and Our Lady of Guadalupe.

    'The rich cultural mix that made evangelization possible is being reproduced again today. Latino peoples meet among themselves and with other peoples thanks to social mobility and the facilities of communication, and they too emerge enriched from this encounter.'

    This is what your formation should be about, continued the Pope, 'sowing the Word generously' as God sows.

    There are three concrete points of action, said the Pope: 'opening the door of your heart and the hearts of those who listen to you; to pitch in and call others to do so with you for the good of all; to heal this world of the great evil that afflicts it and that the pandemic has brought to light.' Each of these, he continued, have two movements — 'personal and communitarian' — which complete one another.

    Be shepherds, continued the Pope.

    'Surely, in your heads, there are infinite initiatives and I do not doubt that by working hard you will do much good and help many people, but our mission would not be perfect if we stayed at that', said the Pope. He urged the members of the College to 'fight against a culture of waste, of social segregation, distrust and prejudice because of race, culture or faith', so that a feeling of fraternity may prevail over any difference.

    'Cure the world of the great evil that afflicts it,' continued Pope Francis.

    'The pandemic has put us in front of the great evil that afflicts our society. Globalization has overcome all borders, but not our minds and hearts. The virus is spreading unchecked, but we are unable to respond together. The world continues to close its doors, rejecting dialogue and collaboration, refusing to open itself sincerely to common commitment for a good that reaches everyone without distinction.'

    The cure of this evil must come from our roots, concluded the Pope.
