Rwanda Extractive Industry Workers Union (REWU) has released findings from the rapid assessment on Rwanda child labor and access to child rights information through media.

Since January 2020, Rwanda Extractive Industries Workers Union (REWU) benefited from the support of World Vision for implementing the project entitled 'It takes every Rwandan to end Child Exploitation Campaign'. REWU executed this mandate in collaboration with different levels of stakeholders involved in community mobilization (local leaders, employers, teachers and school managers, Children themselves, parents, young mentors and community members). The main objective was to contribute to the promotion of child rights, breaking the child labor chain with the aim of empowering children to reach their maximum potential of exploring opportunities in a safe social environment. The discussions around child labor are also channeled through media houses in place

The assessment was conducted by REWU within four targeted districts namely Muhanga, Rwamagana, Gicumbi and Gakenke.

 The rapid assessment was motivated by the existing critical situation of child labor in order to collect accurate insights from beneficiaries and other decision-makers come out with more strategic measures of preventing any form of child labor.

Furthermore, through the rapid assessment, students, parents, and local leaders have identified the most followed media houses in the study sites. This rapid assessment aimed at measuring the extent of the community child labor and the access to child rights' information through media in Muhanga, Rwamagana, Gicumbi and Gakenke Districts, Rwanda.

Specifically, this rapid assessment was intended to:

• Identify working sectors with high number of child workforce;
• Measure the level of parents' involvement in child labor situation;
• Find the required solutions to promote child rights in respective communities;
• Assess the level of community perceptions towards child labor policies established by child right partners;
• Identify influential media houses to share information on child rights.

During the rapid assessment, participants provided information on different working opportunities that attract children to experiencing early exposure to work environment. While there is a considerable number of labored children, even many others are not directly working still face insecure and hazardous conditions.

In line with the used sampling, the most targeted sectors by child labor included industries (36%), domestic services (32.5%) and agriculture (31.5%).

In Rwamagana District, most of respondents confirmed to be involved in service (43%) and agriculture (38%) sectors.

In Gicumbi District, children prefer to be actively working in industry (48%) and agriculture (36%), and this situation seems to be similar to that of Gakenke District (35%) and (34%) respectively. Muhanga presents a slight difference in terms of child labor situation per working sector where 34% represents the industry sector, 33% the service segment and 33% the agriculture domain.

In total, twelve (12) Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) were conducted in 8 Sectors visited.

In Rwamagana District, the targeted sectors were Nzige and Rubona, Gakenke District (Rusasa and Rushashi), Muhanga District (Muhanga and Shyogwe) and Gicumbi District (Bukure and Shangasha).

In total, 143 participants among them 79 children and 40 parents and community leaders were reached through FGDs.

Among 89 children reached in four Districts, 46 girls (52%) and 43boys (42%) participated in FGDs from 4 schools including: GS Bugoba in Rwamagana District and GS Kabuga in Gakenke District, GS Shyogwe in Muhanga District and GS Bukure in Gicumbi District.

The female sex was dominantly represented among children in Gicumbi and Gakenke District, where girls were more motivated and active to participate during the FGD sessions while in Muhanga and Rwamagana boys were more available and active than girls.

 The results of this rapid assessment comprise also the identified main roots of child labor and came out with related recommendations for mitigating the factors that lead to such child abuse. The assessment report finds that main causes of child labor are:

(1) Parental poverty: lower family income, lack of school fees and other costs;

(2) Neighbors' increased needs in domestic services and economic activities;

(3) Poor control upon children by parents and guardians;

(4) Lack of education, awareness and sensitization on child labor consequences;

 (5) Search for cheaper workforce by entrepreneurs.

After assessment the proposed measures to tackle and mitigate child labor are:

(1) To empower poor families in order to improve their socioeconomic conditions by funding social programs and economic projects;

(2) Provide free education to all children from poor families;

 (3) Avail free school meals to all children from poor families;

 (4) Deliver vocational training to unemployed youths for skilled labor;

 (5) Sensitize the general population on child labor existing laws and policies;

During the rapid assessment, participants provided information on the different tools when they want to seek information or key messages from media on child labor.

The most used in general is the radio receiver while TV screen and computers are used by some wealthy families. Sometimes phone messages can be received too.

Team Rwanda is again in celebration mood after its own Mugisha Moise maintained the Yellow Jersey and pedaled to win Stage 4 of the 20^th Grand Prix Chantal Biya in Cameroon on Saturday.

Mugisha took on the other cyclists with a grand speed for 2:46:33 until he crossed the finish line leading.

Slovakian national KUBIŠ Lukáš trailed in second position while Byiza Uhiriwe Rnus of Team Rwanda took the third position in this stage four.

So there must really be something about this month that even traditional Christian churches observe November as a month of no weddings.

It was last month when Wesley and Rudo (not their real names) got married on a sunny day of October 24. Wesley paid lobola and partook in all the traditional requirements, but was told they could only wed after two years.

According to the Shona culture, Wesley is supposed to then take his wife home to start their new family and during the negotiations they agreed that the new bride will have to go to her husband's house the following week.

Boom! It was now in November and Wesley had prepared their newly-acquired two bedroomed flat in Eastlea, Harare, and he got a message from Rudo's aunt that she was no longer coming that week because of their respect and understanding of the Shona culture about the month of November.

Now the lovers have to wait for 10 more days to see each other. November is often known as 'Mwedzi we Mbudzi', or month of the goat because for some reasons it is also the same time when most goats undergoing gestation.

Wilbert Sadomba, in 'Using taboos and Proverbs as Oral Archives of Indigenous Knowledge' eloquently describes this month as follows, 'Women are regarded with the sanctity of nature because they possess power of regeneration through their fecundity.

This is reflected in a number of values, beliefs and taboos.' November marks the period of regeneration of both flora and fauna following the first rains. With abundance of food, herbivores of all kinds start to reproduce and November is the peak period for this process of regeneration.

This observation led to the development of the taboo that forbids marriage during the month of November. The taboo was developed to avoid accidental killing of animals during the gestation period. Marrying in November is normally associated with misfortunes like divorce and failure to conceive'.

Well, Wesley who goes to a local Pentecostal church was of different opinion as he views the month as just like any other months. Some locals regard November, a month which in traditional customs of the Shona people is sacred, meaning that no ceremonies are held such as weddings, parties, bira or kurova nguva (ceremonies to appease spirits) among others.

Some Christians are against the sacred month ban of activities, while some traditionalists still respect the sacredness of the month. A survey by Saturday Herald Lifestyle revealed that the issue of Black November comes with tradition and cultural beliefs.

'November is not a sacred month but is a scary one because on my side that is when most accidents happen, weird things and if you choose to celebrate it you end up having problems in future.

'I remember my brother got married in the month of November eight years ago and they haven't conceived yet. 'My uncle told me that it is because they got married in November, they did not listen to what we told them,' said 34-year-old Pardon Masawi from Chivhu. A visit to traditionalist Tichaona Makonyonga's house in Norton, gives a very different depiction of culture and the sacredness of the month. He takes a bit of bute (snuff) from his palm, sniffs it, sneezes a bit, before narrating the sacredness of November.

'You see, November in Shona is called Mbudzi (which means goat). It is the month where most goats will be reproducing and goats are used for all traditional ceremonies,' said Makonyonga. 'At all ceremonies, lobola and masungiro included, female goats are slaughtered.'

In this line of thinking, one will be killing more than one goat when they slaughter a female goat, while the foetus will be thrown away, going to waste.

Makonyonga believes the spirits and their mediums need rest and assess prayers and sacrifices during this time of the year, a sentiment echoed by another traditionalist.

Recently, businessman and socialite Genius 'Ginimbi' Kadungure met his fate alongside three of his friends while on their way from a party. A close source revealed that the death of the four was mysterious and the funerals would have some troubles.

'Now it is 13 days after the accident but  Mitchelle Amuli (Moana) and the other two Limumba Karim from Malawi and a Mozambican model Alisha Adams are yet to be buried.

'I am not saying that they should not have died in November, but my beliefs concerning the month itself and partying have caused more problems for them,' she said.

Precious Mangundu of Helensvale, a private Science tutor said she does not believe in all the things said about November. 'I got married in November, my third born got married in November. I have been married for 13 years. In fact, next week I am planning our anniversary party and have invited some of my family members. It is only those in the rural areas who said we can't travel in November and this is not stopping my plans. I do what I like and believe. We are actually going to braai goat meat,' she said.

Carling Meats director Carl Magwaza said business has boosted during this month as they have been invited to help host barbecues. Apart from companies, families are holding 'get togethers' because of the lockdown restrictions that were lifted as they are tired of loneliness. Now we are booked four to five times a day at various   venues. They want our meat. I am a Christian and I don't believe in all that hence I am continuing to work,' he said.

However, some regard November as a secret month, when some traditional rituals are conducted in secrecy. Besides the month ends before it ends.

Recent research, led by Tel Aviv University's Prof. Shai Efrati claimed on Saturday that they had managed to successfully reverse the biological aging process — using only oxygen.

Prof. Shai Efrati, together with a team from Shamir Medical Center, found that when healthy adults over the age of 64 were placed in a pressurized chamber and given pure oxygen for 90 minutes a day, five days a week for three months, not only was the aging process delayed — it was actually reversed.

Specifically, the study, which was published in the peer-reviewed journal Aging, focused on whether the process could reverse two key indicators of biological aging: the shortening of DNA telomeres and the accumulation of resultant senescent cells.

A telomere is the end of a chromosome. Telomeres are made of repetitive sequences of non-coding DNA that serve as bumpers to protect the chromosome from damage during replication. Every time replication happens, these bumpers take a hit, making them shorter and shorter.

Once the telomere reaches a certain length, the cell cannot replicate anymore, which leads to senescent cells: aging, malfunctioning cells that ultimately lead to cognitive or other age-related disabilities and even diseases, such as cancer.

Some 35 adults over the age of 64 were involved in the study and were administered hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) utilizing 100% oxygen in an environmental pressure higher than one absolute atmospheres to enhance the amount of oxygen dissolved in the body's tissues.

Every 20 minutes, the participants were asked to remove their masks for five minutes, bringing their oxygen back to normal levels. However, during this period, researchers saw that fluctuations in the free oxygen concentration were interpreted at the cellular level as a lack of oxygen — rather than interpreting the absolute level of oxygen.

In other words, repeated intermittent hyperoxic (increased oxygen level) exposures induced many of the mediators and cellular mechanisms that are usually induced during hypoxia (decreased oxygen levels) — something Efrati explained is called the hyperoxic-hypoxic paradox.

'The oxygen fluctuation we generated is what is important,' he told The Jerusalem Post. 'During this process, a state of oxygen shortage resulted, which caused cell regeneration.'

The practical ramifications include improvements in attention, information processing speed and executive functions, which normally decline with aging and about which more than 50% of people over the age of 60 express concerns.

According to the study, the changes were equivalent to how the participants' bodies were at the cellular level 25 years earlier.

'We are not [just] slowing the decline — we are going backwards in time,' Efrati said. Efrati has been studying the aging process for a decade and runs the Aviv Clinics in Florida.

This study, he said, is proof that the cellular basis for the aging process can be reversed, adding that it 'gives hope and opens the door for a lot of young scientists to target aging as a reversible disease.' It could also enable doctors and scientists to find a way to monitor telomere length and develop medications that could help them grow back when needed.

Will it make people live longer?

The effect's duration is yet to be determined in the long-term, Efrati said. But 'probably yes. We know that people with shorter telomeres die earlier, so it makes sense.'

One disadvantage of the study was its limited sample size. Efrati added the experiment was conducted using a scientific, monitored HBOT chamber and people should not try this at home.

He said, 'There is a lot of junk out there' claiming sacs inflated with air are hyperbaric treatments. 'This is not what is being used in the studies, it is not effective — and moreover, it could be dangerous.'

The Office of the Special Envoy of the UN Secretary-General in Burundi has been declared 'Null and Void' and will be permanently removed on December 31^st.

Burundi's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Development Cooperation said it sent a note verbale on Tuesday, November 17^th to 'notify the Secretary-General of the United Nations of the formal closure and liquidation of the Office of its Special Envoy in Burundi on the 31 December 2020.'

It is official; Gitega does not intend to prolong the presence of this Office arguing that the reasons which influenced for its establishment have now become null and void.

'The motivations for voting of resolution 2248 of 2015 and resolution 2303 of 2016 in their political, security and human rights aspects have become obsolete,' Burundi said.

The head of Burundian diplomacy recalls that Resolution 2248 of November 12, 2015 was voted on the basis of the situation which prevailed in Burundi following the 'insurrectional movement'.

According to Minister Albert Shingiro, ' in order to closely monitor the situation in Burundi, the Security Council invited the Secretary General to deploy a team to Burundi to work with the government, the AU and other partners to assess the situation and consider options to resolve political and security issues. '

The Burundian foreign minister affirms that it had been agreed that this Office of the Special Envoy of the UN Secretary General would close its doors at the end of the 2020 electoral process which ended on August 24, 2020. 'The UN Secretary General could have acted accordingly and liquidated the said office.'

Many action movies are flippantly likened to video games, but few have ever earned that comparison more than Jiu Jitsu.

A series of Street Fighter-esque showdowns tethered together by the type of plot that would barely pass muster in a '90s coin-op, Dimitri Logothetis' film tries to overtly embrace its print-based roots—it's an adaptation of a comic series penned by the writer/director, and features transitional interludes that resemble hand-drawn panels.

Yet in both style and substance, it's truly indebted to arcade fighting hits that prize complicated button-mashing combos over serious characterizations and drama.

Oh, and it's also an aliens-versus-martial-artists saga in which Nicolas Cage plays a 'crazy' sensei with serious blade-wielding skills.

That description might make Jiu Jitsu (on VOD Nov. 20) sound like an entertainingly mindless B-movie extravaganza, but frustratingly, Cage is almost totally wasted by Logothetis' sci-fi beat-'em-up, as are fellow genre luminaries Frank Grillo and Tony Jaa.

Sporting a scraggly beard and a giant sword, Cage's Wylie lives in an underground clay chamber deep in the Burmese jungle, where he apparently spends his time doing, well, it's not quite clear. What is obvious is that Cage has been hired to juice up the marquee personality quotient of this low-rent affair.

To that end, he does his part, cracking wise with manic 'attitude' while providing sage advice for the material's nominal protagonist, who's such a blank slate that virtually anything Cage does—which, admittedly, is very little—resounds as colorful by contrast.
