Banque Populaire du Rwanda PLC. has finally found a suitor after Equity Bank aborted plans to acquire majority stake earlier this year.

Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB)  has announced interest to acquire 62.06% stake in BPR from  current manor shareholder, Atlas Mara Ltd.

The take over will have to be subjected approvals from the Central Bank of Kenya, the National Bank of Rwanda, the COMESA Competition Commission and the Capital Markets Authority, KCB Group said in a statement.

Once approved, KCB plans to make an offer to Arise BV (Norfund, Rabobank, and FMO) who holds 14.6% stake and minority shareholders with 23.3%

The statement from the Ministry released last night shows that 13 of new cases are inmates from Bugesera prison. Others include cases from Kigali city (9), Musanze (4), Gatsibo (2) and Rubavu (1).

Figures from MoH rates the prevalence of death toll at 0.8% and new cases at 1.1%.
The Ministry of Health confirmed the first case on 14th March 2020.

Since the COVID-19 outbreak in Rwanda, 5779 cases have been found out of 614 267 sample tests. 5317 of them have recovered, 415 are active cases while 47 have succumbed to the pandemic.

Coronavirus symptoms include coughing, flu, and difficulty in breathing. The virus is said to be transmitted through the mucous membranes of the respiratory tract.

Rwandans are required to continue to comply with government regulations, especially with frequent washing of hands and water and soap, wearing masks when leaving home or in public.

The EAC Secretariat and Germany successfully concluded their negotiations on development cooperation at the EAC Secretariat's headquarter in Arusha, Tanzania.

In total, Germany committed up to €42.9 million for the next two years.

The negotiations were led by the Secretary General of the East African Community Secretariat, Libérat Mfumukeko, and Marcus von Essen, Head of the East Africa Division at the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).

While BMZ participated virtually, due to COVID-19-related travel restrictions, Regine Hess, Ambassador of Germany to Tanzania and the EAC, joined the negotiations in Arusha.

Mfumukeko welcomed the German delegation and expressed his appreciation of the cooperation: 'We are cooperating in critical sectors. Our joint programmes really touch the lives of the ordinary East African citizen.'

For the German side, Marcus von Essen commended the EAC for its strong role in the ongoing fight against the COVID-19 pandemic in East Africa.

Referring to the EAC-German cooperation in the health sector, he emphasized its preparedness to swiftly react to the pandemic, 'We could build on the foundations that had been laid long before the COVID-19 pandemic struck — testing capacities could be made available quickly and cross-border cooperation created leverage in containing its further spread. Investments in human capital and laboratory equipment will continue in order to keep the regional level of preparedness high.'

Mr. von Essen also complimented the EAC and its Partner States for the economic integration steps already achieved, including the customs union and the common market protocol.

Looking forward, he stressed that Germany wanted to continue to stay at the EAC's side and support the Community in harvesting the fruits of these integration steps by further deepening cooperation in the long-standing programmes on regional and social

Both sides agreed to continue and extend their ongoing cooperation. Out of a total of up to  €42.9 Million, Germany pledged €30.9 Million for cooperation on trade and  economic infrastructure.

It was stipulated that the ongoing programmes on economic integration and trade will be continued. 

Additionally, Germany's assistance to the Lake  Victoria Basin Commission will be extended beyond the current support to integrated water resources management, to promote further development of the region around the Lake  Victoria and possibly Lake Tanganyika and other water basins. 

Germany pledged additional €12 Million to further improve pandemic preparedness. 

Both sides agreed to expand the ongoing support to pandemic prevention and strengthening  of disease monitoring by complementing the current mobile laboratories programme. 

With  the establishment of a regional network of supranational and specialised reference  laboratories, the EAC pandemic preparedness capacities will be taken to the next level and  the EAC resilience towards future health challenges will be strengthened.

Embattled Confederation of African Football (CAF) President, Ahmad Ahmad, who was banned for five years from all football activity by world soccer ruling body, FIFA, has vowed to clear his name of the charges against him.

FIFA's Ethics Committee on Monday banned Ahmad for five years over allegations of financial mismanagement and abuse of office.

In announcing the ban, the committee said Ahmad 'breached his duty of loyalty, offered gifts and other benefits, mismanaged funds and abused his position as the CAF President.

The charges related to CAF organizing and financing an Umrah pilgrimage to Mecca with 16 federation presidents and an equipment supply contract with a French company that had a little track record in soccer.

The investigators relied on a forensic audit of CAF finances by an international accountancy firm that also worked for the Cairo-based soccer body.

Ahmad's lawyers yesterday claimed he was refused the right to examine some witnesses at his FIFA ethics committee hearing.

The lawyers announced on Ahmad's Twitter account he will challenge the ban when he receives the written grounds of an 'incomprehensible and shocking decision' made by the committee. FIFA said Monday that the document would be provided within 60 days.

'This decision was not rendered in a fair and impartial manner,' Ahmad's legal team wrote.

He pledged to also ask the Court of Arbitration for Sport to freeze the ban during his appeal process so he can continue campaigning for re-election.

CAF's 54 member countries are scheduled to vote on March 12.

Before then, Ahmad and other potential candidates must pass an integrity and eligibility check overseen by FIFA-appointed officials.

Potential candidates for the CAF presidency include two current executive committee members — Augustin Senghor of Senegal and Ahmed Yaya of Mauritania — former FIFA executive committee member Jacques Anouma of Cote d'Ivoire and Patrice Motsepe, a billionaire businessman and soccer club owner from South Africa.

Rwandan Singer Karasira Clarisse has released a song praising the renowned Rwandan Politician Tito Rutaremara and others including the Secretary General of La Francophonie (OIF) Louise Mushikiwabo.

Karasira told IGIHE news website that she composed the song as a tribute to Rutaremara who helped her during her music career journey.

'I sang this song to those who loved my music talent, especially Tito Rutaremara, who loved me and kept me motivated during my music journey,' she said.

'I learned a lot from him, including the great love of humility and generosity. There are other names of some people who are very close to me in this song, I can't describe them all but thank you to Rwandans and foreigners who are satisfied with the song and I have been working on it for two years as part of my first album. ' Karasira added

In the song, the artist praises other popular names in the Music industry such as Cécile Kayirebwa, Maria Uwera, Niyomugabo Philemon, Rugamba Sipiriani and others.
