In the past decade, Burundi says it has managed to expand its tax base from U$ 174,787,242.789 in 2010 to a staggering U$526,418,048.869 by 2019.

According to Audace Niyonzima the Commissioner General of Burundi Revenue Authority (OBR), the country had a tax base worth FBu 340 billion in 2010 and has since expanded to FBu 1024 billion in 2019- this is equivalent to 201.18% increase.

These revelations were made on Thursday during ceremonies marking the day dedicated to taxpayers 5th edition organized by the revenue collection body OBR.

At national level, the event was held at Kugasaka stadium in the capital of the province of Ngozi. Taxpayers had the opportunity to showcase the innovations made in different sectors of production.

Niyonzima said the OBR is making efforts to facilitate taxpayers' access to its services through their decentralization by building provincial offices as well as the popularization of the tax law.

Regarding fraud, Niyonzima said that OBR was able to recover more than FBu 4 billion of the 17 closed cases, all thanks to the collaboration of all stakeholders including the police, intelligence and the population.

Meanwhile, the OBR also intends to computerize its services in charge of internal taxes to facilitate collection and thus avoid embezzlement of the latter.

Audace Ndayizeye the President of the Federal Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Burundi (CFCIB) said that the traders of the 10 provinces already have provincial offices which facilitates the task of the OBR and allows a good collaboration between traders and the OBR.

However, there are concerns that traders are not well registered and this leads to gross fraud and tax defaults.

Ndayizeye asked the government of Burundi to conduct a census of traders as was done for officials to facilitate the task of the OBR, to collect taxes. And to demand the fight against false accountants who deceive traders by making false statements.

President Evariste Ndayishimiye called upon Burundian traders to group together and undertake major projects in order to increase production and be able to export the surplus to earn foreign currency.

He also said his government will set up teams that will travel across the country to track down those involved in fraud and economic embezzlement. He warned the governors, provincial commissioners and information officers that once fraudsters caught in their areas of ​​jurisdiction without intervening to arrest them, will all be sacked.

The MoU signed yesterday in Kigali by the CEO of REG, Ron Weiss and his counterpart of ZESA, Dr Sidney Z. Gata was also witnessed by the Minister of Infrastructure, Amb. Claver Gatete and the Ambassador of Zimbabwe to Rwanda, Prof. Charity Manyeruke.

The signed MoU provides a framework of cooperation and aims at laying the foundation for the establishment of a business understanding leading to the signing of the energy partnership infrastructure implementation agreements between both parties.

The MoU is signed following a visit by officials and engineers from Zimbabwe who have been in Rwanda witnessing the country’s achievements in electricity distribution.

Amb. Gatete explained that the MoU reinforces bilateral relations that it is in the framework of cooperating to promote both countries.

He further stressed that Zimbabwe has come to learn from Rwanda’s experience where officials visited various electricity infrastructure including Shango substation.

Among others, Amb. Gatete said that signed MoU seeks to assess how concerned parties can collaboratively address citizens’ problems.

'They want to emulate a lot witnessed and requested to foster cooperation on both sides. This will serve as the foundation for improved services rendered to citizens,' he said.

Ambassador Manyeruke highlighted that the MoU is centered on cordial diplomatic and economic relations that have deepened roots.

Rwanda and Zimbabwe enjoy existing cordial relations. Rwanda has an ambassador representing its interests in Zimbabwe and vice versa.

In 2017, RwandAir started flights to Harare in Zimbabwe.

Rwanda reports over 56% households with access to electricity of which 41.3% are connected to the main grid while 15.4% use solar energy.

The government of Rwanda targets universal electricity access by 2024.

Jordan is growing increasingly worried about reports suggesting that Israel has offered Saudi Arabia control over the Islamic holy sites in Jerusalem, including Haram Al-Sharif/Temple Mount, Jordanian and Palestinian officials said on Thursday.

The recent secret meeting between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has increased fears in Jordan that the kingdom may lose its status as custodian of the Jerusalem holy sites, the officials said.

The issue dates back to 1924, when the Supreme Muslim Council, the highest Muslim body in charge of Muslim community affairs in Mandatory Palestine, accepted Hussein bin Ali (Sharif of Mecca) as custodian of Al-Aqsa Mosque.

In the 1994 peace treaty with Jordan, Israel committed to 'respect the present special role of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan in Muslim Holy shrines in Jerusalem.'

Israel also pledged that when negotiations on the permanent status will take place, it will give high priority to the Jordanian historical role in these shrines.

The Wakf Department that oversees Muslim sites in Jerusalem is controlled by the Jordanian government. In 2013, the Palestinian Authority also recognized Jordan's role through an agreement signed between PA President Mahmoud Abbas and King Abdullah II.

In recent weeks, however, the Jordanians have received 'indications' that Israel, backed by the US administration, was considering granting the Saudis some form of representation in the Jerusalem-based Wakf Department.
