  • RRA commissioner general visits Shema power Lake Kivu to strengthen relations with taxpayers #rwanda #RwOT

As RRA conducts the Taxpayers Appreciation Month launched on 4th November, one of the key activities for this month is the visit to taxpayers at their premises to understand the nature of their business, discuss tax related issues if any, and take note of their recommendation to improve services delivered to them and tax procedures for a business friendly environment.

Mr Ruganintwali asserted that this year, the Taxpayers Appreciation Month is celebrated under the theme 'Support Business for economic resilience' and this support starts by listening, to identify areas of weakness and provide guidance.

Alex Karera Kabuto, the Chief Executive Officer of Shema Power Lake Kivu welcomed RRA’s support and the initiative of reaching out to taxpayers and listening, discussing and advising where necessary.

'The tax administration has for instance facilitated this project by exempting all our imported machinery and other raw materials. On our end, we strive to comply with tax laws and procedures and when a misunderstanding arises, they provide a team to help us to solve the issue,' said Mr. Karera.

The execution time for SPLK is estimated to be 36 months. For the last 12 months, the project has paid around Rwf 4 billion in taxes. Mr Karera states that when the project becomes operational, it will be generating an estimated Rwf 5 billion monthly income, with 56 megawatts produced regularly.

Taxpayers’ visits started in Kigali City with BAKHRESA GRAIN MILL (AZAM), VOVA PRODUCTS (Matelas Dodoma), and SPERANZA, then extended in Eastern province when the management visited IMANA Steel. These visits are intended to strengthen relations between the revenue body and taxpayers and thereby improve on the level of tax compliance.

All activities comprised in the Taxpayers Appreciation Month will be concluded by celebrations at the National level on 20th November, 2020 at Kigali Convection Center.

  • British Prime Minister Boris Exposed To Covid-19 Again #rwanda #RwOT

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson met with a small group of lawmakers for about half an hour on Thursday, including one who subsequently developed coronavirus symptoms and tested positive.

The premier is now self-isolating according to his handlers at 10 Downing Street.

  • Rwanda to host virtual African Mining Forum #rwanda #RwOT

International public and private stakeholders will participate in the first of a five-day virtual Africa Mining Forum today.

The conference will provide a venue for presentations and discussions on investment in small mining operations across Africa. The COVID-19 recovery of mining markets is expected to be an important topic at this event.

Rwanda is seeking to benefit from the forum. Due to the pandemic, Rwanda's mining sector has suffered from a combination of lockdowns, reduced airline timetables and a global drop in mineral prices. Revenue from Rwanda's three main mineral exports—tin, tungsten and tantalum—fell by 30.9% earlier this year as demand contracted.

Rwanda plans to revive its mining industry by offering incentives to junior mining companies at the Forum. Because mineral exploration is significantly underfunded, Rwanda will allow mining companies to write-off financial losses associated with exploration costs for 10 years on annual tax return submissions. While Rwanda's scheme has already attracted $20 million from the UK-based mining company Techmet, it is not yet clear if the incentives will be enough to attract increased investment. Mineral exploration is a very risky venture and lacks the quick return on investments that many mining companies prefer.

  • Uganda: Candidate Kyagulanyi Teargased For Breaking Covid-19 Guidelines #rwanda #RwOT

Uganda Police on Sunday sandwiched the car carrying Presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi and teargased him and his supporters for grossly disregarding the government's guidelines against Covid-19 pandemic.

'A teargas canister was thrown directly into my car, in Mbale district. The crime of the people was waving at me, and marching with me peacefully towards our designated venue,' Presidential candidate Kyagulanyi said.

'Why would you have to go against the guidelines of the electoral commission? You were advised to put into practice the preventive measures against the deadly coronavirus but instead you become an agent in spreading it among the innocent local people,' Jordan a concerned Ugandan reacted to Kyagulanyi's post on social media.

However, Kyagulanyi whose campaign methods are contradictory include, running with a crown of supporters for longer distances to the venue of his campaign speeches.

According to Museveni this campaign is supposed to be conducted in a scientific format as opposed to the traditional way of physical rallies, 'we are running a purely scientific campaign because of this terrible pandemic.'

General elections will be held in Uganda on 14 January 2021.

'Gen. Museveni and his pathetic hypocrisy. In every town, our people are brutalised, teargassed and arrested for gathering to wave at us.  On the other hand, Museveni hires people, dresses them in t-shirts and parades them on streets under police protection,' candidate Kyagulanyi further complained.

Incumbent President and candidate Yoweri Museveni however, says, 'Current circumstances (Covid-19) do not allow me to do rallies. Although I am also campaigning, I call upon my colleagues to desist from endangering our people no matter the reason. The ones in charge should also see to it that Ugandans' lives are protected.'

For Museveni who walked away from the campaign venue podium and took to the ground and showed his fitness stamina by taking press ups, argued that, 'In these campaigns, I have completely refused to 'kill' my people by calling them for rallies.'

Covid-19 situation in Uganda as of Sunday reported cases 15,789 those recovered are 8,038 and the deaths have reached a souring 144.
