  • Rwanda National Police Connects 785 Households With Solar Energy #rwanda #RwOT

    Rwanda National Police (RNP) has lit 785 households in four villages in Nyagatare, Burera, Gicumbi and Musanze districts, with solar energy.

    The official handover of the solar power systems was held concurrently on Saturday, December 12.

    It is part of the RNP environmental protection efforts, which also saw about 8200 assorted trees including fruits, planted on the same day in Nyagatare (4100), Gatsibo (3000), Rwamagana (600) and Musanze (500) districts.

    In Nyagatare District, at least 368 households were connected with solar power systems in Kiyombe, Matimba and Nyamiyonga.

    More 178 households of Tetero village in Gitovu Cell, Ruhunde Sector of Burera district were also lit as well as 158 households in Nyakibande and Kiriba villages of Kaniga and Rubaya sectors, respectively, in Gicumbi.

    In Musanze District, Police lit 81 households of Mugari village, Migeshi cell in Cyuve Sector.

    This brought the number of households that RNP connected with solar energy in Mugari to 181. Mugari is also one of the three villages in Musanze where RNP connected combined 381 households with solar power system. The two other villages are Ruhehe and Masoro where 100 households, each, was lit.

    Over 500 bamboo trees were also planted in the vicinity of the Automobile Inspection Centre in Musanze town.

    While addressing the residents shortly after the environmental protection activities in Musanze, the Governor of the Northern Province, Jean Marie Vianney Gatabazi reminded them of their individual and collective roles to protect the environment.

    'This automobile inspection centre, the trees we have planted today and solars are partly aimed at protecting the environment. Protect and make good use of them,' Governor Gatabazi told the residents.

    The automobile inspection centres test gas emissions, among others.

    In Nyagatare, the Governor of the Eastern Province, Fred Mufulukye, thanked RNP for its wide security approach to also conserve nature and further improve the welfare of the people.

    'Planting trees, replacing candles and kerosene with solar are all part of the wide human security and ensuring that people are safe in all aspects. These trees and forests are yours to conserve. They are destroyed by people in your communities and as community policing agents, report them as well as any other wrongdoer,' Governor Mufulukye told the residents.

    Commissioner of Police (CP) Bruce Munyambo, Commissioner for Community Policing told residents of Nyagatare that the RNP human security and community development activities is because of the good leadership and guidance by President Paul Kagame.

    CP Munyambo reminded them of their community policing rights and responsibilities and urged them to share information with the Police on anyone they suspect to be engaged in environmental destruction and other criminal activities.

    In Friday, Police was also joined by residents of Gasabo District to plant at least 1300 trees in Munini Village, Shango Cell in Nduba Sector.

  • Quality education, service delivery among indicators of good governance that need improvement #rwanda #RwOT

    It was revealed yesterday during the launch of the 7th edition of 'Rwanda Governance Scorecard (RGS).

    Each of eight pillars on which the research was entrenched on showed an improvement compared to the previous year but indicated gaps to be filled.

    The CEO of RGB, Dr Usta Kaitesi explained that research findings indicated constant improvements for some pillars like security and justice and slowdown in some areas.

    'There are great improvements in the areas of security, justice, fighting against corruption, transparency and accountability on a commendable progress that should not step back. Areas that need special attention for improvement are related to service delivery, eradicating poverty, streamlining systems aimed at eliminating stunting and concerting efforts to drive Rwandans into technology whereby we have committed at 100% digital services among public institutions in the National Strategy for Transformation 1,' she said.

    The Minister in the Office of the Presidency, Judith Uwizeye who graced the event highlighted that Rwandans are the primary beneficiaries of Rwanda Governance Scorecard and assured commitment for the implementation of recommendations.

    'We have the interest of generating data that tells us the truth that anybody else cannot tell us. Transformational Governance is a key pillar of National Strategy for Transformation (NST1). Thus, the Government of Rwanda is committed to implement the recommendations of this edition of Rwanda Governance Scorecard for the good of our citizens,' she said.

    Other areas of priority that need improvement include, social protection, poverty reduction and climate change resilience, improving quality education to attain knowledge based economy, boosting Made in Rwanda products value chain to compete at the international market and tackling imbalance between imports and exports.

    RGS is an independent annual publication of the RGB that seeks to gauge the state of governance in Rwanda, comprehensively assesses governance in using both primary and secondary data sources.

    It is mainly designed to generate credible and reliable data on governance issues, serves as practical tool that drives policy reform in the domain of governance through the identification of areas for improvement and generates actionable recommendations and to contribute to current and authentic knowledge formation about Rwanda.

    The launch of the 7th scorecard held yesterday was attended by various officials from private, public institutions, civil society organizations, higher learning institutions and research centers.

    The research carried out was entrenched on eight pillars namely; :(1) Rule of Law, (2) Political Rights and Civil liberties, (3) Participation and Inclusiveness, (4) Safety and Security,(5) Investing in Human and Social Development, (6)Control of corruption, Transparency and Accountability, (7) Quality of service delivery,(8) Economic and corporate governance.

    The pillar of Security came on top scoring 95,44% in 2020 from 94,29% of 2019, the Rule of Law performed at 87,86% from 84,70 % of last year, Political Rights and Civil liberties scored 85,76 % from 85,17 % while Participation and Inclusiveness got 81,96% from 73 % of last year.

    The pillar of Investing in Human and Social Development scored 73,32% from 68,53%, Control of corruption, Transparency and Accountability got 86,28% from 84,28%, Quality of service delivery scored 78,31 % from 70,54 % while Economic and corporate governance scored 78,14% from 76,43% of last year.

  • Rwanda's Dr. Sezibera Appointed Commonwealth's Special Envoy #rwanda #RwOT

    The Commonwealth Secretary-General Patricia Scotland has today announced the names of four special envoys and champions who will promote the Commonwealth's values and principles around the world.

    The four roles will be responsible for portfolio areas covering key issues designed to support and assist the Commonwealth's 54 countries and 2.5 billion people.

    The four individuals taking on these new roles are: Former director of The Prince of Wales's International Sustainability Unit, Justin Munday, as the Special Envoy on Climate Change, Environment and Socio-Economic Affairs.

    He will support the Commonwealth's climate strategy with a focus on preparing for next year's COP 26 in Glasgow and mobilising resources to help achieve Paris Agreement ambitions and relevant Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in member states.

    The Secretary-General's Special Envoy for Health and Education is Rwandan medical doctor, diplomat and politician, Richard Sezibera.

    He will focus on the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) relating to health and well-being (SDG3) and quality education (SDG4).

    Prof Praja Trevedi, former economic adviser to the Government of India, has been named the Secretary-General's Special Envoy for SDG Implementation.

    His focus will be on implementing the UN Agenda 2030 and its 17 Sustainable development goals; including combatting poverty and reducing inequalities.

    Finally, the Secretary-General's Champion for Equality in Sports is British Paralympic athlete, Anne Wafula Strike.

    Her role involves connecting sporting initiatives and supporting the implementation of SDGs relating to sport, peace and development and improving equality in sport.

    Speaking on the announcements, the Secretary-General Patricia Scotland said, 'I am deeply honoured that these Special Envoys and Champions of such exceptional talent, quality and experience have generously agreed to help us promote the values and principles of the Commonwealth so that we can better deliver the Sustainable Development Goals and assist the 2.5 billion people in the Commonwealth in need of our support.'
