  • Grand Prix Chantal Biya: Burkina Faso's Paul Daumont Wins Stage II #rwanda #RwOT

    Paul Daumont a Burkinabé cyclist trounced 56 cyclists to with the Second Stage of the ongoing Grand Prix Chantal Biya in Cameroon. He pedaled to the finish line in time of 3:21:29.

    Daumont won by settling a strong group of ten riders ahead of Lucas Kubis (Slovakia) and Issiaka Cissé (Ivory Coast).

    In the general classification, Moise Mugisha (Rwanda), winner of the first stage yesterday and ninth today, retains the lead with 34 ' ahead of Daumont, who comes back to second position. Kubis is third, also 34 ' behind the leader.

  • Mobile banking agent caught with counterfeit money #rwanda #RwOT

    Jean Luc Mutabazi, 28, was arrested after he allegedly duped one of his clients identified as Alphonse Kalisa, 37, with fake bills worth Rwf10, 000, in the denominations of Rwf5, 000.

    The Police spokesperson of the Eastern region, Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Hamdun Twizeyimana, said that on Tuesday morning, Kalisa withdrew Rwf13, 400 from his mobile account to pay water bills.

    'Kalisa went to Cogebank branch in Kigabiro to pay the utility bills, but the bank found that two bills in the denominations of Rwf5, 000 (Rwf10, 000) were counterfeit; Kalisa was contained and the branch management immediate called Police at Kigabiro station,' CIP Twizeyimana said.

    He added: 'Kalisa disclosed to law enforcement organs that he withdrew the money from the agent—Mutabazi. When law enforcement officers located Mutabazi, they found other Rwf90, 000 on him, which he had mixed with other genuine bills amounting to Rwf400, 000. He was immediately taken into custody for the alleged financial crime.'

    Security officers are also searching for another person, who allegedly supplied Mutabazi with the fake money the previous day.

    The arrest of Mutabazi comes on the heels of increased vigilance, information sharing and operations against individuals who counterfeit or circulate fake currencies.

    Article 269 in the law determining offences and penalties in general, says 'any person who, fraudulently counterfeits, falsifies or alters coins or bank notes which are legal tender in Rwanda or abroad, notes issued by the Treasury with its stamp or brand, either banknotes or alike that have legal tender in Rwanda or abroad, or one who introduces or issues in Rwanda such effects or notes with knowledge that they are forged or falsified, commits an offence.

    Upon conviction, he/she is liable to imprisonment for a term of not less than five (5) years and not more than seven (7) years.'

    Ugandan voters will have to endure the escalating violence in the ongoing presidential campaigns before going to polls on 14 January 2021.

    By Thursday, more than 203 people have been shot dead in the running battles between opposition supporters and state security apparatus across the country.

    According to Kampala police commander Moses Kafeero, Bobi Wine who is President Yoweri Museveni's main opponent has disregarded Covid-19 measures at his rallies and this led to his arrest on Wednesday.

    Bobi Wines arrest has prompted thousands of his NUP party supporters across the country and especially in metropolitan Kampala to protest against his detention. Other opposition presidential candidates have suspended the campaigns until Bobi is released.

    'As law enforcement, we can't stand and watch as politicians put the lives of Ugandans at stake by encouraging processions and huge rallies, which fuel Covid-19 transmission,' said Kampala police commander Moses Kafeero.
