  • Police Finally Captures Kigali's Notorious Multiple Identity Land Fraudster #rwanda #RwOT

Owning a house in Rwanda's capital Kigali has become one of the biggest dreams for nearly all walks of life- and it causing rapid rise in prices of prime plots of land both within Kigali and surrounding suburbs.

Many people are on a daily basis making inquiries about plots of land to buy and sell prompting the intervention of middle-men (commissionaires) that get paid on commission for fixing deals between buyers and sellers.

However, in the process of buying and selling, many people have fallen victim to fraudsters that carefully take advantage of ignorance of this complex property business. The fraudsters are so cunning and highly connected to bankers, land Centre and sometimes within law enforcement agencies.

Despite Rwanda Investigations Bureau currently investigating an enormous pile of cases related to property and financial fraud, many such crimes are taking on a new dimension both in speed and high level treachery.

For example, Munyeragwe Jean Damascene (considering names on his driver's license) has been in and out of prison because of fraud related to treacherous buying and selling of plots of land around Kigali.

Munyeragwe in his 40s, was serving a 3-year prison sentence when his name appeared on a list of among over 2,000 inmates convicted for various crimes that were accorded Presidential pardon in September 2018.

Immediately out of prison gates, Munyeragwe resumed his trade because his network still existed and was still going on with property fraud business. It is not well known how they obtain genuine land titles which they use to sell to unsuspecting clients- this remains a very big challenge for the law enforcement agencies.

Munyeragwe's luck run out recently early on September 24, when he sold a plot of land to a young woman Kayitesi Anitha.

'He identified himself as a pastor and was accompanied by a decently dressed woman and drove a nice SUV as we headed to the site of the plot,' Kayitesi told Taarifa, adding that she didn't suspect any foul play.

The plot with (UPI:1/02/01/01/1776) measuring 659 square meters is located at Rubungo village, Kinyaga cell of Bumbogo sector in Gasabo district but is registered in the names of Uwizeyimana Leo and his spouse (names withheld).

'I liked the plot and immediately paid Rwf2million to Munyeragwe,' Kayitesi said, 'it was the second plot I was buying but later discovered I had been fleeced.'

Munyeragwe is said to always hire expensive cars and changes registration number plates whenever he goes to meet unsuspecting clients.

Recently on November 2, Munyeragwe was arrested after fleecing another person to whom he sold a plot of land valued over Rwf20million. He is currently detained at Kimironko detention facility as he awaits trial. It is believed that Munyeragwe has conned many people that usually fail to reach him after they notice a deal gone bad.

  • Women and Girls 2020 Virtual Summit Brings Together Participants Across Africa #rwanda #RwOT

The Women and Girls Africa Summit (WAGS) is back to discuss women's rights in Africa — this time for a virtual conference bringing together participants across the continent.

WAGS is a free event that amplifies the voices of African women and girls and centers them in finding the solutions to challenges they face. More than 3,500 people have already registered for the summit, which will include 150 speakers and 25 sessions on health, the economy, education, safety and security, and the environment.

    November 16 — November 18, 2020

Registration and more information about the event is available at:
    https://w.tame.events/e/177478161

With the theme 'Realizing the Power of Africa's Future' the summit will bring the voices of African women and girls to the fore and develop programs and institutions that prepare and position them for leadership and as agents of their own self-determination.

'Women's rights are human rights. The time has come for women and girls in Africa to lock arms with women and girls around the world to tackle the issues they face,' said Akudo Anyanwu, Founder, Friends Africa.

'Africa's socio-economic transformation will only be realized once we aggressively address gender-specific challenges, prioritize gender equality and women's participation, and firmly entrench women in leadership positions at all levels in society,' articulated Her Excellency Graça Machel.

The summit could not come at a more critical time, given the growing challenges women and girls face amid the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition to risks to their health, African women and girls are also dealing with a drop in household income and growing domestic violence. The summit will address these challenges that are exacerbated by COVID-19.

'Solutions need to be designed based on women's experiences. A maternal death is not one single moment, it's about a woman's access to quality care and information before she even gets pregnant. It's about strengthening the entire health system around her and understanding the realities she is facing in her community,' stated Mary-Ann Etiebet, Lead and Executive Director, MSD for Mothers.

The summit sessions will also amplify the objectives of the African Charter on Human and People's Rights, the Maputo Protocol on the Rights of Women in Africa, African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child, the UN Sustainable Development Goals, Beijing +25, and UN Security Council Resolution 1325-all important policies and roadmaps towards the achievement of gender equality, development and peace for women and girls globally.

'It's an honour to participate in this year's summit and I am delighted to join other panelists to share ideas and best practices for empowering women and girls across Southern Africa as we build resilient societies' expressed Maria Olanda Bata, Chief of Party of the USAID Resilient Waters Program implemented by Chemonics International Inc.

WAGS is heartened by the overwhelming public and private sector supporters of the event and hopes to harness the expertise and political will of all its partners to move the needle on the empowerment of women and girls in Africa.

Among others, WAGS thanks the Graça Machel Trust, UN Women, UNICEF, MSD for Mothers, Children's Investment Fund Foundation, African Women Development Fund, African Leadership Institute, PACT, UNFPA, Chemonics International Inc., and EngenderHealth.

The summit also aims to facilitate Africa's openness to equity. Thus, the summit organizers invite key industries to join in discussions about investing in and ensuring that Africa realizes its full potential on issues like climate change, reproductive health, and the development of socially responsible enterprises. WAGS' objective is to activate change agents in communities across the continent of Africa and empower them with the resources to implement actions that will help countries across the development continuum.

'Summit sessions will cover diversity and equity in health, climate, education, and the economy — all priorities as African nations address the COVID pandemic and work towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals,' said Traci L. Baird, President and CEO of EngenderHealth, one of the summit's sponsors.

  • Ethnic Cleansing Reportedly Targeting Ethiopia's Amharas #rwanda #RwOT

Thousands of Ethiopians have flooded into neighbouring Sudan fleeing from gross ethnic cleansing ongoing in a fighting between Ethiopian government forces and rebellious northern leaders. The United Nations says more than 14,000 'exhausted and scared' refugees have fled the Tigray region to Sudan.

Reports indicate that Ethnic Amharas are being ruthlessly killed while Ethnic Tigrayans arrested, in hiding or cut off from the world.

Amnesty International confirmed the killings via images and witnesses, and the United Nations warned of possible war crimes. Most of the dead were ethnic Amharas, according to a man who helped clear the bodies away and looked at identity cards.

The United Nations fears that the 10-day conflict in Tigray region has killed hundreds, sent refugees flooding into Sudan, and raised fears it may suck in Eritrea or force Ethiopia to divert troops from an African force opposing al Qaeda-linked militants in Somalia.

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed blames the massacre on forces loyal to the Tigray region's government, which his administration regards as illegal after a months-long falling-out. The federal government seeks to arrest and replace its leaders.

Prime Minister Abiy accuses the regional government of 'unceasing hate and fear propaganda.' On Friday, speaking in the Tigrinya language, he urged its forces to surrender 'in the next two to three days.'

He also accuses the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF), which rules the mountainous region of more than five million people, of treason and terrorism.

The U.N. office on genocide prevention condemned reports of 'targeted attacks against civilians based on their ethnicity or religion' in Ethiopia, including hate speech and incitement to violence. It warned that ethnic violence 'has reached an alarming level over the past two years,' and the new rhetoric sets a 'dangerous trajectory that heightens the risk of genocide, war crimes, ethnic cleansing and crimes against humanity.'

  • Interview: Ericsson's Todd Ashton takes us into company's work in Rwanda and East Africa Region #rwanda #RwOT

By: Ange de la Victoire DUSABEMUNGU

In order to understand the plans and activities of the Ericsson Telecommunications Company especially in Rwanda and East Africa as a region and Ericsson future plans, TOP AFRICA NEWS held a detailed interview this week with Todd Ashton, Vice President and Head of Ericsson East and South Africa.

Mr. Todd says Ericsson will continue to play a role in the development of technology in Rwanda and other African countries based on its experience in Telecom Industry where it has been helping companies like MTN and Airtel who are now at the forefront in the acceleration of telecom services.

Here is a detailed discussion below

    1. Take us through the Historical background of Ericsson and how the company's administration decided to invest into the Rwandan and East African Market?

Ericsson has done business in East Africa for over 100 years when sales of telephone receivers commenced in 1894. We are well established with offices in Rwanda, Ethiopia, Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania. We operate in the Information and Communication System (ICT) sector together with our partners being the services providers such as MTN and Airtel. Our comprehensive portfolio ranges across Networks, Digital Services, Managed Services and Emerging Business.

We at Ericsson believe that ICT has the ability to level the global playing field and enable African countries to harness the full potential of their human capital. We also agree that a well-planned policy and regulatory environment is key to encouraging partnerships, entrepreneurship, job creation and knowledge sharing.

    1. Ericsson as a telecommunication company has invested in the modernization of its technologies. Where are you now in terms of tech innovations? IoT for instance?

Massive IoT technologies continue to be rolled out around the world, but at a slightly slower pace in 2020 than previously forecast due to the impact of COVID-19. 2G and 3G connectivity still enable the majority of IoT applications, but during 2019, the number of Massive IoT connections increased by a factor of 3, reaching close to 100 million connections at the end of the year according to Ericsson Mobility Report figures.

At Ericsson, our new offerings within cellular IoT will enable service providers to address a larger part of the IoT market — with more advanced use cases, across multiple industries. Broadband IoT and Industrial Automation IoT are launched as new segments, to complement the existing segments Massive IoT and Critical IoT. We've also enhanced our Massive IoT offering which, together with new Broadband IoT solutions, are designed to leverage new capabilities across 4G and 5G — connecting service providers with new growth opportunities in industry digitalization.

    1. What are the feasible 5g applications for IoT that are applicable for social development in East Africa (ie health care, soil monitoring, education, transportation)?

5G will revolutionize 5 key industries including: TV and media; manufacturing; healthcare; telecommunications; and transportation and infrastructure. Ericsson's 5G Business Potential report outlines a set of industries served by more than 200 qualified 5G-enabled use cases, divided into nine use case categories or clusters. These are enhanced video services, real-time automation, monitoring and tracking, connected vehicle, autonomous robotics, hazard and maintenance sensing, smart surveillance, remote operations and augmented reality.

Each use case category or cluster serves a set of industries. Looking at a couple of examples, 'Enhanced video services', is as expected, dominated by the media and entertainment industry. But in addition, more than half of its value comes from other industries, such as healthcare, manufacturing and public safety industries. For 'Real-time automation', the value is largely being built up on the industries of public transportation, manufacturing and healthcare.

    1. How do you stimulate the market and the SME's appetite towards your services?

Our primary mission as a company is the development and deployment of mobile broadband.  This has major benefits both for the economy and for society and will unleash the innovation potential for both consumer and SMEs across Africa.  We believe that achieving broadband is a basic human right and we know that for every 1000 new broadband connections, 80 new jobs are created (Ericsson and Arthur D Little).

A 10% increase in mobile broadband adoption secures 0.6 to 2.8% GDP growth (Ericsson and Imperial college) and doubling of average achieved broadband speed generates an additional 0.3% GDP growth (e, Arthur D little, Chalmers university).  Therefore, we believe it's important to accelerate the rollout of 4G and prepare for 5G in the near future.

One important enabler for the acceleration is the development and implementation of regulatory policies that stimulate investment and competition.  In most markets we see that about three license holders can make significant investments to achieve a good and affordable customer experience for mobile broadband while at the same time getting reasonable returns.  In Rwanda specifically, we are encouraging the release of technology neutral spectrum for mobile companies with a track record and willingness to invest in mobile broadband.  These licenses should be affordable and long term in nature, thereby creating a better case for investment in order to achieve the economic benefits outlined above.

    1. How do you see the contribution of Ericsson in responding to digital divide in Africa and especially in countries of East Africa?

Our mission has always been to help our customers connect the unconnected. This can be challenging under normal circumstances but especially critical in a time of crisis like we have now.

Our engineers and field staff are part of critical teams deployed during a crisis. Our teams have been working around the clock to ensure our customers' networks can withstand shifts in bandwidth needs as people continue to work and use video conferencing from home and kids are attending classes online instead of in the classroom.

The communications industry supports other industries by enabling them to deliver digital products and services such as health care, education, finance, commerce, governance and agriculture. It also plays a vital role in tackling climate change by helping other industries reduce emissions and improve efficiency. We are continuing to stay close to our customers to understand their needs, and we are doing everything possible to support our customers to maximize their network capacity and performance.

    1. What are Ericsson's projects taking place that one can benefit from? Especially for Young entrepreneurs in the nascent business ecosystems and those whose services tackle key development sectors?

Our annual Ericsson Innovation Awards (EIA) is a global competition that offers university students around the world the chance to develop new, innovative ideas with support from Ericsson experts. The 2020 Ericsson Innovation Awards (EIA) is a call to 'Reclaim the Future.' This year, the annual global competition calls on students around the globe to set major change in motion by committing to addressing the current and future challenges of climate action. Focused on how ICT/technology solutions can provide radical climate change mitigation for consumers and industry alike.

Ericsson also has a Graduate Program in several African countries including Kenya, Nigeria, Sudan and Angola. The program aims to fast-track young, potential leaders, train them in the Ericsson ways of working and strategy as well as ensure that they are geared up to meet the business challenges of the future.

Ericsson's Graduate Program will cultivate change leaders and impactful executors in Africa who strive to make the company better through the orchestration of culture, process, and technology. It will develop ambitious, agile and high performing leaders who will contribute to next generation technologies for years to come.

In addition, Ericsson is committed to developing STEM leaders through digital transformation initiatives and events in East Africa. We are fully aware of the challenges in Rwanda when it comes to capacity building in various sectors including STEM which is one of the objectives of the Rwanda National Employment Program (NEP) and we are working on addressing its key objectives. Since its establishment in 2009, Ericsson Rwanda has focused on recruiting and empowering local talents, we are proud to have more local than foreign resources in our workforce.

    1. Recently Ericsson has been ranked as the 12 most sustainably managed company in the world, congratulations! What are the lessons on the new normal and adaptation to remote working at Ericsson?

Sustainability is central to Ericsson's purpose — and the company was recently ranked #12 on The Wall Street Journal's list of the 100 Most Sustainably Managed Companies in the World.

Ericsson's Sustainability and Corporate Responsibility strategy focuses on three pillars: responsible business, environmental sustainability and digital inclusion. We firmly believe in sustainability practices based on science and embedded throughout our business can help create value for employees, customers, investors and — ultimately — society. It's excellent recognition of cross-company collaboration to reduce risks and create positive impacts across our value-chain.

We are going through unprecedented times with the coronavirus pandemic, which has impacted everyone around the world either directly or indirectly. As a global company with around 100,000 employees and presence in 180 countries, we are aware of our responsibilities towards the societies where we operate. Throughout this crisis, we guide our decisions by putting the safety and health of our employees, customers and partners as a first priority. Ericsson currently has a large number of employees working from home globally. All main production sites are currently in operation.

    -end-
