South Africa’s new envoy to Rwanda presents credentials #rwanda #RwOT
In December 2018, South Africa summoned George Nkosinati Twala who was representing South Africa to Rwanda after completing his term.
The recalling came two days after tensions triggered by allegations that Rwanda spoke ill of the then South Africa’s Minister of Foreign Affairs.
Towards the end of last year, South Africa designated Mandisi Mpahlwa, 60, as the new ambassador to Rwanda.
Following the presentation of credentials to Dr Biruta, the designated envoy will also present his letters of credence to President Paul Kagame.
According to a message posted on twitter account by Rwanda’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs: 'This was an occasion to discuss ways to further strengthen bilateral relations’.
Mpahlwa has been representing South Africa to Mozambique where he completed his term this year.
He once served as the Minister of Trade and Industry and held different top positions in South Africa since 2004.
In October 2019, President Paul Kagame received Jeff Radebe, a special envoy from the President of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa. Later on, both head of states met on the sidelines of Russia, Africa Summit in Sochi where they held discussions.
In July 2019, Rwanda replaced Vincent Karega, former ambassador to South Africa by Eugène Kayihura. Vincent Karega had held the position for eight years.
South Africa granted refuge to Kayumba Nyamwasa, the head of RNC terror group and P5, a coalition of political parties intending to destabilize Rwanda’s security.
Speaking to IGIHE during a past interview before leaving Rwanda in February last year, Twala revealed that South Africa once wanted to extradite Kayumba Nyamwasa and his colleagues to other countries but didn’t demonstrated willingness to accommodate them.
He however explained that they could not extradite them to Rwanda because of treaties regarding the status of protecting refugees the country signed with UN.
In March 2018, President Cyril Ramaphosa said that the problem of Rwandans being denied visas to South Africa would soon become history after holding talks with President Paul Kagame. However, up to now, Rwandans still struggle to get visa to travel to South Africa.
Rwanda has at different times explained that actions of convicted people or fugitives should not blur bilateral relations.

Rwanda Miners Union urges employers to provide employment contracts to Mining Workers #rwanda #RwOT
As Rwanda celebrates International Mining Day on December 04, 2020, the Rwanda Extractive Industry  Workers' Union (REWU) has requested Mining employers to provide contracts to mining workers as stipulated in the provisions of the Labor law.
The Secretary General of REWU, Eng. Andre MUTSINDASHYAKA, highlighted that a number of achievements have been made in the development of the Mining sector but there are still some issues, including employers who do not value the work done by miners.
REWU Secretary General said that there are many challenges that are hindering advancement of the mining profession, hence more interventions are still needed to resolve them.
According to Mutsindashyaka, there are so many miners who do not have employment contracts including miners employed by the sub-contractors, which affects their livelihoods and families' wellbeing as well.
He said that 'you find an employee who has been in the company for three or more years without employment contract;
'Such workers cannot even get an advance loan of salary from the financial institution because the bank will not rely on an employee who has not an employment contract' He explains
Mutsindashyaka further added that some of the mining companies do not affiliates their employees to the Rwanda Social Security Board (RSSB) like pension contribution which is the worst challenge to the future of mining workers once they are old
'Many employees are paid in hand instead of being paid through financial institutions; which is also a serious obstacle.' Mutsindashyaka said
'On top of that, there are still miners who work but they are not paid for their work, under pretext that they have not found the minerals or production, while they have used their energies into the tunnels ' he added.
'This is affecting their families, especially for those who have children; they are likely to suffer from malnutrition,' Mutsindashyaka explains, adding that there should be a minimum wage for every employee of the mining industry.
Other issues raised by the union include the existence of mining accidents that are life-threatening, sometimes this is due to the lack of training on the health and safety of workers.
Finally, he mentioned another issue of the employees who are fired in violation of labor laws among others.
'Our Union is urging the Government authorities to request the employers to resolve all the issues facing the workers in this sector as it is one of the contributions that will improve the working conditions as well as production increament' Mutsindashyaka noted.
The Union also urges the Ministry of Public Services and Labor (MIFOTRA)as in its mandate there is also to set a minimum wage that should be paid to mining workers, so that the problem of workers who are not paid as said above can be completely solved. However, as the miners point out these issues, the union encourages mining workers to continue to work hard to increase productivity in order to fill the gap brought by COVID 19 pendemic on the national economy

Uganda's Largest Ferry Unveiled #rwanda #RwOT
0SharesUganda is expected to unveil its largest ever water vessel named MV Sigulu ferry. It is by far Uganda's largest passenger ferry with capacity of 300 passengers, it is locally built.
Nearly every year, Uganda gets into the news with regular boats capsizing on Lake Victoria losing many lives. Most of these boats that capsize are either too old, overloaded and not fueled enough leading to mysterious but avoidable accidents.
President Yoweri Museveni currently campaigning for his fifth term in office is expected to unveil the new Ferry and use the occasion to canvass for votes.
In May this year alone, a Ugandan owned ferry capsized killing dozens of passengers plying through Lake Victoria waters.
At least 30 people died after a boat transporting football players and fans capsized on Lake Albert in Western Uganda in May 2018. In the same year, another 29 people died after a cruise boat carrying party revellers capsized on Lake Victoria.
Lake Victoria is the world's second-biggest lake and the largest in Africa- this lake is shared by Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania and some 30 million people depend on its resources.
Challenges include pollution and falling water levels â” biodiversity in Lake Victoria has dropped by 50% since the 1980's.
English colonialist John Hanning Speke named it after Britain's Queen Victoria when he travelled there in 1858.
Some have called for the lake's name to be changed â” proposals include its Luganda-language name Nalubaale, and Lake Jumuiya which means 'togetherness' in Swahili.
