  • Kayonza: 15-year-old girl stabbed to death, suspected murderer on the run #rwanda #RwOT

Dusabe Chantal’s body was found this week in Butimba Village, Kawangire Cell in Rukara Sector in Kayonza District.

Executive Secretary of Rukara Sector, Nkunzurwanda John told IGIHE that three of her neighbors had been arrested, while the man with whom they live, who is the main suspect has disappeared.

The girl’s body was found naked, suspected of having problems with the man they were living with illegally, which culminated into the tragedy.

“She was stabbed, three fingers were cut off. She was stabbed in the mouth, and in the armpit; it’s clear that her fingers were cut off in self-defense. After killing her, they took her to a field and covered her with grass so that she could not immediately be found. It seems she was killed on Saturday.”

The victim had dropped out of school in her fourth year of primary school and had given birth to a child last year.

Authorities have not yet established the identity of the suspect.

The body of the deceased was taken to Gahini Hospital for a postmortem before burial.

  • Rwanda among countries that adopted new Global Safety Stamp to Recognise Safe Travels Protocols #rwanda #RwOT

WTTC, which represents the global Travel & Tourism private sector, created the Safe Travels stamp to allow travellers to identify destinations and businesses around the world which have adopted the global standardized health and hygiene protocols.

The United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) has welcomed the WTTC Safe Travels stamp, which place the safety and hygiene of travellers as top priority.

Gloria Guevara, WTTC President & CEO, said: “Our Safe Travels stamp is proving a great success and we are delighted to see even more popular countries and destinations adopt our global health and hygiene protocols.

“The success of the WTTC Safe Travels stamp shows its importance not only to countries and destinations, but also, crucially, to travellers and the 330 million people around the world who work in and depend on, the Travel & Tourism sector.

“The stamp is a critical step in re-establishing consumer confidence in Travel & Tourism and ensuring travellers can rest easy knowing that enhanced standards of hygiene are in place and they can once again experience ‘Safe Travels’.”

Since the launch of the WTTC Safe Travels stamp, destination countries, cities, and hotspots around the world have now adopted WTTC’s new protocols.

Belise Kariza, Chief Tourism Officer at Rwanda Development Board, said:
“Rwanda’s number one priority is the health and well-being of visitors to our beautiful country. As one of only three countries in the world with endangered mountain gorillas and numerous other primate species, we also have a special responsibility to protect these magnificent animals. “

“The creation of the WTTC Safe Travels global protocols and Stamp represent an important step in the reopening of tourism around the world and Rwanda is proud to adopt these global standards. We are excited to welcome tourists back to Rwanda for safe and memorable experiences – from seeing the Big 5 on safari and exploring Rwanda’s lush rainforests to learning about our vibrant culture.”

As part of its Safe Travels protocols, these worldwide measures provide consistency and guidance to travel providers and travellers about the new approach to health, hygiene, deep cleansing and physical distancing, in the ‘new normal’ of COVID-19 world.

The protocols were devised following the experience of WTTC members dealing with COVID19 and based on guidelines from the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

According to WTTC’s 2020 Economic Impact Report, during 2019, Travel & Tourism was responsible for one in 10 jobs (330 million total), making a 10.3% contribution to global GDP and generating one in four of all new jobs.

  • China Has 410,000 5G Base Stations By June #rwanda #RwOT

China built 257,000 new 5G base stations in the first half of the year, according to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT).

The total number of the stations had reached 410,000 by the end of June, MIIT data showed.

Shipments of 5G phones reached 86.23 million units in China, with 5G package users hitting 66 million by the end of June, said Wen Ku, an official with the MIIT.

The value-added output of information transmission, software and information technology services rose 14.5% year on year, 1.3 percentage points faster than the first quarter.

To give full play to the commercialization of 5G, more policies should be implemented to boost the vitality of the market, Wen said, adding that international cooperation in 5G technology, industry and application should be strengthened.

  • Ugandan Police Arrests Over 100 Partygoers For Flouting #COVID-19 Lockdown #rwanda #RwOT

Uganda’s police on Sunday arrested over 100 partygoers for flouting COVID-19 lockdown restriction measures, authorities said Monday.

The police and military officers have arrested the offenders at the La Venti Lounge and Kitchen, about 12 km northeast of the capital Kampala, Patrick Onyango, Kampala Metropolitan police spokesperson, told Xinhua on Monday.

Bars and clubs “are not supposed to open and operate,” said Onyango.

However, the partygoers defied the restrictions and “began enjoying themselves without practicing social distancing.”

“This could be a breeding ground for the spread of the virus. We had to come in order to prevent a further spread of the virus,” he said.

He also said that the suspects currently detained at Najjera and Kiira police stations are waiting to be arraigned in courts over violation of presidential directives and ministry of health guidelines on COVID-19.

“They will be charged with doing acts that are likely to cause the spread of infectious disease,” said Onyango.

Bans on public gatherings and a night curfew are in place in the east African country, as part of measures to curb the spread of the virus.

So far, Uganda has reported 1,115 COVID-19 cases, with 975 recoveries and two deaths since the first case was reported on March 21, according to the health ministry.

  • CIMERWA To List By Introduction On Rwanda Stock Exchange At Rwf120 Per Share #rwanda #RwOT

CIMERWA PLC, Rwanda’s only integrated cement manufacturer has finally received approval from the Capital Markets Authority and the Rwanda Stock Exchange to list its shares on August 3, 2020.

A free float of 344,575,560 shares (49% of 703,219,520 total shares) worth Rwf41,349,067,200 (About US$43 million) will be available for trading to the investor community at Rwf120 per share on the Rwanda Stock Exchange.

The 49% constitutes shares owned by AGDF Corporate Trust on behalf of the government of Rwanda, Rwanda Social Security Board, Rwanda Investment Group, and Sonarwa Holdings Ltd.

With CIMERWA PLC Listing by Introduction, it will become the second company to list through this approach and the tenth to be listed on the Main Investment Market Segment of the RSE.

Albert Sigei, CIMERWA CEO said that this listing by introduction will prove that, “We have been part and parcel of Rwanda’s growth story with a contribution to the society on many fronts.”

Sigei explained that this will be an opportunity for investors to gain exposure to the attractive cement industry with solid growth potential.

“The listing will further encourage the drive towards the building of a stronger capital market base. We are excited with the opportunity to bring on board a wider pool of retail and institutional investors, both local and international, to participate in the ownership of CIMERWA,” Sigei added.

Speaking on the timing of the equity transaction considering the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, CIMERWA Board Chairman, Regis Rugemanshuro, explained that the company decided to continue with its plans and expressed confidence that CIMERWA remains a strongly attractive investment opportunity considering the fundamentals of Rwanda as a country and the cement industry in particular.

“The timing is right,” he said, adding that, “This transaction will create opportunities for private investors, and the Government will become a neutral player in a sector whose potential is yet to be fully exploited.”

“There could not be a better avenue of achieving this objective than listing at the RSE,” Rugemanshuro said.

With Rwanda having about 57kg per capita cement consumption annually, Rugemanshuro says the company has but only scratched the surface on the huge long-term potential in the cement industry.

The announcement of this equity transaction comes at a time when CIMERWA has been enlisted to supply cement to the ministry of education’s (MINEDUC) school expansion project where over 22,000 classrooms will be built nationwide over a short span of 3 months.

The company’s production is currently at close to design capacity.

“We commend the government of Rwanda for prioritizing the agenda of provision of safe education for all through the MINEDUC classrooms project. We are proud to support them throughout this journey as we pursue our “Strengthening Rwanda” agenda,” Sigei said.
