  • Russian Covid-19 Vaccine To Be Produced In BRICS Countries #rwanda #RwOT

President Vladimir Putin has revealed that Russia has signed agreements on local production of Russian vaccines with China and India.

'The Russian Direct Investment Fund has signed agreements with Indian and Brazilian partners to conduct clinical trials of the Sputnik V vaccine, and with pharmaceutical companies in China and India to open centers for the production of Russian vaccines in these countries, not only for their own needs, but also for third countries,' Putin said.

He also urged BRICS leaders to accelerate the opening of a center for the development and research of vaccines. Putin stressed that the current task is to make the existing anti-coronavirus vaccines available to public to launch their mass production.

'It is very important to combine efforts to mass produce these products in a wide civil circulation,' he said.

  • President Kagame Wishes For Rapid Return To Peace In Ethiopia #rwanda #RwOT

As the ugly War in Ethiopia rages on the country's leadership has sent Demeke Mekonnen Hassen the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs into a lobby drive across her key allies.

On Wednesday, Demeke Mekonnen led his deligation to Rwanda's capital Kigali and met with President Paul Kagame who expressed the wish for rapid restoration of peace and stability in Africa's second most populous country.

During their discussion, Dr Vincent Biruta Rwanda's Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation was present.

Meanwhile, on Monday Demeke Mekonnen was in Kampala, Uganda where he also met with President Yoweri Museveni over the situation in Ethiopia. The Ethiopian delegation met Museveni on a campaign trail at Gulu state lodge, Northern Uganda.

'Africa's problem is that we never discuss ideology, focusing so much on diplomacy. I totally disagree with politics that focus on ethnic federalism. We must emphasise the issue of oneness and common interests because it is the only way we can prosper,' Museveni said during their discussions.

Without revealing extra details of their discussion, Museveni noted that their discussion focused on the peace and security issues affecting Ethiopia currently. 'Being one of the oldest countries that was not colonised in Africa, Ethiopia is the pride of the continent.'

Meanwhile, on Tuesday, the Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed declared that a three-day deadline given to the Tigray region's leaders and Special Forces 'expired today [Tuesday].'

'The final and crucial' military operation will launch in the coming days against the government of the country's rebellious Tigray region,' the Ethiopian leader warned.

Now, 'we are marching to Mekele to capture those criminal elements,' Ethiopia's minister in charge of democratization, Zadig Abraha, said in an interview with Press. 'This will be a very brief operation.' Mekele, he said, will be the final stage.

Ethiopia's allies including Uganda and Kenya are calling for a peaceful resolution, but Abiy's government regards the Tigray regional government as illegal after it defiantly held a local election in September.

  • Cervical Cancer: Second Largest killer Of Women In Poor Countries #rwanda #RwOT

The World Health Organisation has launched an initiative that seeks to accelerated elimination of cervical cancer.

Rwanda's Kigali International Convention Centre lit blue in support of this initiative although many may not have noticed the sudden switch to a UN light Blue.

'Kigali Convention Centre in teal color to join hands with other partners on the launch of the Global Strategy to Accelerate the Elimination of Cervical Cancer,' the KCC management said on Tuesday.

Cervical cancer is a preventable disease and is the fourth most common cancer among women globally.

Rwanda's First Lady Jeannette Kagame on Tuesday expressed concern that while the world has all it takes to stop cervical cancer, women in low and middle-income economies are still succumbing to it.

'Up to 93% of cervical cancers are preventable, but today, cervical cancer is the second largest killer of women in low and middle-income countries after breast cancer. This is unacceptable when taking into account the available technology, policies and cost-effective measures for early diagnosis and treatment,' the First Lady said.

The First lady made these remarks Tuesday while speaking at the Virtual Launch of the Global Strategy to Accelerate the Elimination of Cervical Cancer.

In rolling out its fight against cervical cancer the WHO Global Strategy has launched three key steps: vaccination, screening and treatment.

According to WHO, successful implementation of all three steps could reduce more than 40% of new cases of the disease and 5 million related deaths by 2050.

'Eliminating any cancer would have once seemed an impossible dream, but we now have the cost-effective, evidence-based tools to make that dream a reality,' said WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

'But we can only eliminate cervical cancer as a public health problem if we match the power of the tools we have with unrelenting determination to scale up their use globally,' Dr Tedros added.

Without taking additional action, the annual number of new cases of cervical cancer is expected to increase from 570 000 to 700 000 between 2018 and 2030, while the annual number of deaths is projected to rise from 311 000 to 400 000.

In low- and middle-income countries, its incidence is nearly twice as high and its death rates three times as high as those in high-income countries.

'The huge burden of mortality related to cervical cancer is a consequence of decades of neglect by the global health community. However, the script can be rewritten,' says WHO Assistant Director-General Dr Princess Nothemba (Nono) Simelela.

'Critical developments include the availability of prophylactic vaccines; low-cost approaches to screening and treating cervical cancer precursors; and novel approaches to surgical training. Through a shared global commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals and leaving no-one behind, the countries of the world are forging a new path to ending cervical cancer,' Simelela says.

  • Mrs. Kagame calls on men to play a bigger role in the fight against cervical cancer #rwanda #RwOT

The First Lady made the remarks on Tuesday, November 17, 2020, in a message issued at the Virtual Launch of the Global Strategy to Accelerate the Elimination of Cervical Cancer.

The program was approved by the General Assembly of the United Nations World Health Organization (WHO) 2020, which is co-chaired by 194 countries. It will focus on three areas including prevention, testing, and treatment where it is expected to reduce the risk of new infections by 40% and five million deaths by 2050.

The event was also attended by Tsepo Motsepe, First Lady of South Africa, Princess Dina Mired of Jordan, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the WHO, and his deputy Zsuzsanna Jakab among other dignitaries.

Mrs. Kagame pointed out that women in low and middle-income economies are still succumbing to cervical cancer while the world has all it takes to stop it. It is a concern which WHO Director-General also mentioned two years ago, and not much has been done to reverse the trend so far.

'Up to 93% of cervical cancers are preventable, but today, cervical cancer is the second largest killer of women in low and middle-income countries after breast cancer. This is unacceptable when taking into account the available technology, policies, and cost-effective measures for early diagnosis and treatment,' the First Lady said.

This happens at a time when the HPV vaccine, Gardasil 9, has proven to be highly effective if administered before a girl or woman is exposed to the virus but, according to the First Lady, Rwanda is registering a success story since 2011 when the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) vaccine was introduced in Rwanda.

She said the country implemented the WHO recommendations on screening, treating and vaccinating targeted population groups, and results were commendable, thanks to 'the effort between leaders and community health workers at a national and grassroots level.'

'Today, the vaccine is included in the national immunization regimen for children,' the First Lady said.

The First Lady acknowledged the awareness campaigns that in most cases targeted women and girls, and the attention the media dedicated to this cause.
However, Mrs. Kagame said that there are still challenges ahead 'that warrant our urgent attention: the critical role and responsibility of men in reducing the incidence of cervical cancer.'

The challenge lies in the fact that HPV is the most common viral infection transmitted through sexual intercourse, yet HPV-related cancers are not as common in men as it is in women who are likely to develop cervical cancer. In this perspective, men tend to behave as if the cancer is a battle that women just, should fight.

'But to this day, there is limited knowledge of HPV among men, which comes with the risk of undermining the progress made so far. This is especially true of cultural settings where women are still striving for their full sexual and reproductive rights,' the First Lady said.

This brought her to a call to men to be active in the prevention of cervical cancer, first of all through understanding their role in protecting their female partners, the most victims.

This also comes with the responsibility 'to ensure that at a young age, boys just like young girls are systematically vaccinated. Until then, the best prevention to protect women against this cancer will continue to be the use of condoms.'

WHO estimates that the death toll from cervical cancer has risen from 570,000 in 2018 to 700,000 by 2030, while the death toll has risen from 311,000 to 400,000.

Cervical cancer is ranked second in Africa in terms of the prevalence of women and the number of deaths, with Rwanda, ranked first. Human Papillomavirus (HPV) accounts for 99.7% of all cases of cancer.

After contracting the HPV Virus, bleeding in non-menstruation periods and in the menopause period are some of the symptoms of cervical cancer.
