  • Rwanda Miners Union urges employers to provide employment contracts to Mining Workers #rwanda #RwOT

    As Rwanda celebrates International Mining Day on December 04, 2020, the Rwanda Extractive Industry   Workers' Union (REWU) has requested Mining employers to provide contracts to mining workers as stipulated in the provisions of the Labor law.

    The Secretary General of REWU, Eng. Andre MUTSINDASHYAKA, highlighted that a number of achievements have been made in the development of the Mining sector but there are still some issues, including employers who do not value the work done by miners.

    REWU Secretary General said that there are many challenges that are hindering advancement of the mining profession, hence more interventions are still needed to resolve them.

    According to Mutsindashyaka, there are so many miners who do not have employment contracts including miners employed by the sub-contractors, which affects their livelihoods and families' wellbeing as well.

    He said that 'you find an employee who has been in the company for three or more years without employment contract;

    'Such workers cannot even get an advance loan of salary from the financial institution because the bank will not rely on an employee who has not an employment contract' He explains

    Mutsindashyaka further added that some of the mining companies do not affiliates their employees to the Rwanda Social Security Board (RSSB) like pension contribution which is the worst challenge to the future of mining workers once they are old

    'Many employees are paid in hand instead of being paid through financial institutions; which is also a serious obstacle.' Mutsindashyaka said

    'On top of that, there are still miners who work but they are not paid for their work, under pretext that they have not found the minerals or production, while they have used their energies into the tunnels ' he added.

    'This is affecting their families, especially for those who have children; they are likely to suffer from malnutrition,' Mutsindashyaka explains, adding that there should be a minimum wage for every employee of the mining industry.

    Other issues raised by the union include the existence of mining accidents that are life-threatening, sometimes this is due to the lack of training on the health and safety of workers.

    Finally, he mentioned another issue of the employees who are fired in violation of labor laws among others.

    'Our Union is urging the Government authorities to request the employers to resolve all the issues facing the workers in this sector as it is one of the contributions that will improve the working conditions as well as production increament' Mutsindashyaka noted.

    The Union also urges the Ministry of Public Services and Labor (MIFOTRA)as in its mandate there is also to set a minimum wage that should be paid to mining workers, so that the problem of workers who are not paid as said above can be completely solved. However, as the miners point out these issues, the union encourages mining workers to continue to work hard to increase productivity in order to fill the gap brought by COVID 19 pendemic on the national economy

  • Uganda's Largest Ferry Unveiled #rwanda #RwOT

    Uganda is expected to unveil its largest ever water vessel named MV Sigulu ferry. It is by far Uganda's largest passenger ferry with capacity of 300 passengers, it is locally built.

    Nearly every year, Uganda gets into the news with regular boats capsizing on Lake Victoria losing many lives. Most of these boats that capsize are either too old, overloaded and not fueled enough leading to mysterious but avoidable accidents.

    President Yoweri Museveni currently campaigning for his fifth term in office is expected to unveil the new Ferry and use the occasion to canvass for votes.

    In May this year alone, a Ugandan owned ferry capsized killing dozens of passengers plying through Lake Victoria waters.

    At least 30 people died after a boat transporting football players and fans capsized on Lake Albert in Western Uganda in May 2018. In the same year, another 29 people died after a cruise boat carrying party revellers capsized on Lake Victoria.

    Lake Victoria is the world's second-biggest lake and the largest in Africa- this lake is shared by Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania and some 30 million people depend on its resources.

    Challenges include pollution and falling water levels — biodiversity in Lake Victoria has dropped by 50% since the 1980's.

    English colonialist John Hanning Speke named it after Britain's Queen Victoria when he travelled there in 1858.

    Some have called for the lake's name to be changed — proposals include its Luganda-language name Nalubaale, and Lake Jumuiya which means 'togetherness' in Swahili.

  • President Putin Orders Veterans Take Lead In Nazi War Crimes Investigations #rwanda #RwOT

    Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered the World War II veterans to cooperate with the court in the investigations of crimes committed by the Nazi army.

    According to reports from the Kremlin, the new investigations focus on World War II-era atrocities committed by Nazi forces across Russia, including in Volgograd.

    Last month, in what appears to be the first ruling of its kind, a court in the northwestern region of Novgorod said mass killings of Soviet citizens in the village of Zhestyanaya Gorka were an act of genocide by the Nazi army.

    When 94-year-old World War II veteran Vasily's family made their regular check of his mailbox on Saturday they found a formal summons from the prosecutor's office in Volgograd, a city in southern Russia previously known as Stalingrad.

    It said he had to attend a hearing on Dec. 1 to be questioned as a witness in the murders of at least 1,700 Soviet citizens committed by Nazi invaders and their accomplices during the occupation of the Stalingrad region between July 17, 1942, and Feb. 2, 1943.

    'We just couldn't believe that the prosecutors would summon a frail old man to their offices during the coronavirus outbreak using such a strict tone,' the veteran's grandson Denis Chistyakov told local daily. 'Why not just come to his house for a chat?'

    While Russia has in recent years launched a series of new archive probes into World War II, reports are now starting to emerge of veterans being summoned to recount their experiences. The shift comes against a background of what observers say is a newfound interest — spearheaded by President Vladimir Putin — in the conflict and how the world remembers it.

    The family ignored the summons and decided not to mention it to Vasily — who fought in the Battle of Stalingrad and was later taken prisoner and sent to eastern Germany — fearing the investigation would damage his health. The document said Vasily would be forced to attend another hearing if he didn't show up, but there has been no follow up regarding his non-appearance yet.

    'He doesn't really like talking about those war days,' Chistyakov said. The prosecutors' office in Volgograd told media that such summons had been sent to at least 80 veterans in the region; the independent Novaya Gazeta outlet reported that they were also being sent to veterans throughout the country.

    Moussa Faki, Mahamat the Chairperson of the African Union Commission flew to the DRC capital Kinshasa to meet President Felix Tshisekedi who is preparing to assume his new role as Chairperson of the AU in early 2021.

    Tshisekedi, received Moussa Faki on Thursday at the Palais de la nation where both held discussions over several issues and especially the forthcoming extraordinary virtual summit on the continental economic free trade zone (CFTA).

    The AU Commission chairperson Moussa Faki indicated that, on December 5, President Tshisekedi, in his capacity as 1st Vice-President in office of the African Union, will participate in a virtual extraordinary summit on the Continental Economic Free Trade Zone (CFTA) under the theme 'Silence the guns'.

    Moussa Faki confirmed President Tshisekedi  will assume the functions of head of the African Union during the Ordinary General Assembly in early February 2021 in Addis Ababa.

    He noted that this was part of the reasons he flew to Kinshasa to meet President Tshisekedi -the preparation for this assumption of functions was the subject of their discussions.

    Moussa Faki Mahamat also said he was satisfied with the way the Head of State is preparing for the presidency of the African Union.

    The AfCFTA is an African Union (AU) flagship initiative that creates a single market for goods and services, a customs union and guarantees the free movement of people and capital.

    Albert Muchanga, the AU's Commissioner for Trade and Industry has previously emphasized that increased intra-African trade would foster regional integration and development, leading to peace and security.

    'History has shown that countries that trade amongst themselves rarely go to war,' said Muchanga, adding that: 'The benefits of free trade are not only economic; nations become more economically interdependent. They swim or sink together.'

    AU member states want to accelerate collective efforts to end conflicts and crises in Africa, while expressing concern that terrorists and armed groups have failed to heed the calls of the AU and UN leadership for a global ceasefire'.
